Can you post a front on pic of the connectors? Also are you sure this is something he's had with him since the 70's, I ask because the condition seems to be too nice for something that old.
From what I can tell in the pics it appears to be a DB25 Parallel port MultiDevice cable similar to the one sold here.
These devices have only been around for the last 15-20 years, so it wouldn't be from when he worked in IT afaik.
