Not just that. The Americans so closely allied themselves with Pakistan, Afghans and the muslims at large that they didn't just support them with guns and money, but ideologically too. As the picture says, the US obviously believed in the holy war 'Jihad' and in the Mujahideen. The Americans' recognition obviously lent a lot of credibility.
What was expected: The tribal warlords who were supported by the US with guns and to grow opium were hoping that after the war, the US would help rebuild their country. Two major groups were vying for power. 1. The nationalist resistance forces under Ahmad Shah Masood, who everyone believed was the true heir and the rightful leader. 2. The radical Islamist forces secretly supported by the Saudis under Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and others. Who were basically outsiders. They weren't even Afghan to begin with. Clearly they had ulterior motives and backed by Saudi Wahabi agenda. Who do you think the Americans supported. Of course the absolute worst. They went with Hekmatyar who went on to form Taliban. Who basically ran a terrorist government on strict religious lines in Afghanistan. Even going on to hijack civilian airplanes from India.
What happened: When the Soviet Union fell, the Americans obviously didn't expect the sudden demise. Suddenly they were left with a lack of purpose. They had no enemy to fight. With their main objective fulfilled, they simply closed shop and left Afghanistan in a hurry. All their promises of rebuilding the country were soon discovered to be lies. The local chiefs soon realised that the US didn't care about their country's future and were left seething. Thousands of young men armed with the deadliest weapons supplied by the US were suddenly jobless. The US simply did the worst thing possible. They got Ahmad Shah Masood killed and supported Hekmatyar on to seizing power and letting them run amok and form government. Pakistan obviously allied themselves with Taliban and diverted their mercenaries to India to fight their own Jihad. In the end, Afghanistan was completely destroyed by both the Americans and later Pakistan. They used their soil to fight a proxy war and their young men to grow drugs and fight someone else's war (Pakistan's occupation and war against India for Kashmir).
If you want to know more about this, get this book. Confessions Of A Mullah Warrior by Masood Farivar, an Afghan who fought as a Mujahideen warrior and then went on to study in the US to become an author. It's a first hand account of everything that happened. From before the war and later. Hope this helps.
