But I think the more common recommendation is just to use earbuds with a mic for now and save to either get something a little more quality (hyperx cloud II) or good headphones and a separate mic.

It really depends on your budget, but I'd recommend gaming headsets. They never let me down on sound quality & soundproof:

• The good one that I know is SteelSeries Arctis 5 Gaming Headset and I've been wearing mine for a year at the libraries (public and McGill libraries), it is soundproof and has a mute mic button (90$ CAD +tax + free shipping, no need to charge, not wireless, if the 3.5mm cord is broken you can always change it, can connect to PC/Mac, it's in stock at Best Buy if you want to shop in-person),
• The cheapest gaming headset I know is the Corsair HS35 Stereo Gaming Headset (on Amazon, 50$ CAD +tax +optional shipping prices, connects with the 3.5mm cord).
• If you want to connect with Apple-to-Apple products & are willing to spend more $$$, you could get Air Pods (any generation should be fine), Bluetooth, but I find that I can hear some noises sometimes. Also, not bashing Apple products but once battery dies, you have to charge it again. And the Air Pods may fall out (depending on how your earlobes are shaped).
• The cheapest Bluetooth earphones I know are JLab GO Air POP In-Ear Truly Wireless Earphones & JLab Audio Studio On-Ear Sound Isolating Bluetooth Headphones, talking about JLab Bluetooth headphones, though they are comfortable and have a very good battery life, it is not necessarily soundproof (prof might hear your background noise).

TL; DR: I'd recommend SteelSeries Arctis 5 Gaming Headset, but go with what you can afford. Other cheaper options: Corsair HS35 Stereo Gaming Headset or JLab products, if you're willing to spend $$$ & want to look like other Mcgillians: AirPods, for Apple-to-Apple connectivity.
