How much does it really help? We're getting a few roaches every day, and if I turn on the bathroom light at night there are usually 5 or 6 of various sizes on the floor. I'm minutes away from pulling the trigger on this or this.
[Note to /u/PoorlyShavedApe: You probably already know the following; I'm putting it here as a PSA to those who may not, as I did not a few minutes ago. Thanks for the recommendation, btw.] ~~Apparently, the only difference between "food grade" and "pest grade" is differing FDA and EPA labelling requirements. So, the best price per pound.~~
>One difference between food-grade and non-food grade is that food grade is regulated to contain less than 1/2 of 1% of crystalline silica.
>Backing up a bit, diatomaceous earth is a mined product. What is being mined are fossilized shells of prehistoric plankton. The prehistoric plankton can be either salt water or fresh water, depending on whether the prehistoric lake-bed or ocean-bed being mined was fresh or salt water.
>One constituent of these fossilized remains are silica, which exists both in crystalline and in amorphous (non-crystalline) forms. Crystalline silica is essentially shards of broken glass and should not be breathed in. Doing so can lead to the lung disease silicosis (as seen on TV :). Amorphous silica, apparently, is safe to breath in small amounts.
>The difference is that food-grade diatomaceous earth is regulated by the FDA to contain less than 1/2 of 1% crystalline silica. Since I'm spreading this stuff around the house, on my cat, and probably under the house (they say it also controls termites), I'm going with food grade.
So, when you say "really helps", do mean you still see a few, but not as many? Do you still see babies?
