It depends on the board.
Marlin is the software that 3d printers usually use (firmware is the more specific term).
Open up the printer where the motherboard is and try to find the version.
If it's an 8-bit board, it's likely a green one. That one is a bit more complex, it requires like some sort of additional adapter piece and you have to manually make some changes in firmware or whatever. You can still attach a BLTouch to these boards but it would be more difficult. I think you also require a separate bootloader. Try to look up youtube tutorials for these as the process could be a bit too long to type out.
If it's a 32 bit board tho, it's likely black and says V 4.2.2, or 4.2.7. These are much easier to install a BLTouch on. Creality does offer upgrade kits that will come with all the hardware you'll need for the 32 bit board. The 32bit board already has a connection for the BLTouch so just connect the cable and install the BLTouch on the printhead with the given mount.
In terms of firmware if you have a 32bit board, you can flash (basically install) new firmware into the printer by just putting the .bin firmware file into the SD card and inserting it in, and then turning on the printer. It will then automatically read it and install the new firmware.
Try to find some youtube videos to explain this, but make sure they are ones about the 32 bit board. Version 4.2.2 or 4.2.7.
BLTouch. If you have the newer boards (4.2.2, 4.2.7, the black ones) then it's quite easy to install. Creality sells kits of BLTouches for these newer boards. The process is much simplified compared to the older 8-bit green boards. There is only one connection into the board, and then you flash some firmware using the micro SD card, and boom.
Got this, came with wire that plugged in perfectly, brackets for V1 and V2 in Aluminum, screws and new Zips.
Plugged in on BL, plugged into board, and flashed.
I went with “el cheapo” clone from Amazon, named 3DTouch, and I won’t recommend it to anyone not ready for troubleshooting hardware/software issues.
Please make sure your printer’s motherboard has a port for connecting BLTouch before ordering!
You would be looking for something like this:
Creality BLTouch V3.1 Auto Bed Leveling Sensor Kit for Ender 3 V2/Ender 3/Ender 3 Pro/Ender 3 Max/Ender 5/Pro with 32 Bit V4.2.2/V4.2.7 Mainboard 3D Printer
It has brackets for different models of Ender printers (but you probably can find printable one on Thingiverse), and wiring looks correct out of the box, unlike with the clone.
But, as far as I know, you’ll have to flash firmware that supports BLTouch to make it work.
Also, this is the model I purchased. There are a lot of clones, but I've heard this is the best and I can attest to it. It's a bit pricey, but so, so worth it.
You bought the ender 3 pro kit then. You should've bought this one that includes a bracket for the 3 pro, 3max, 5, and 3v2. I got it and it works perfectly and it plugs into the dedicated slot on the v2 motherboard.
Creality BLTouch V3.1 Auto Bed Leveling Sensor Kit for Ender3 V2/Ender 3/Ender 3 Pro/Ender 5/Pro with 32 Bit V4.2.2/V4.2.7 Mainboard 3D Printer [link]
Not sure if you’re in the US but this is the kit I got that is basically a plug and play. Just make sure it matches your board version. In the instructions it will say to change “G28” to “G28G29” in the start g code but you actually have to put G29 on the next line by itself, save you hours of troubleshooting haha best of luck!
Should stay red all the time with a blue light. Had the same problem. I have a 32 but board and needed a specific cord to make it work. Not all the versions Amazon sells work. This link is what worked.
Yeah it smashes into the bed sometimes. That's really confusing. So I have to adjust the merlin firmware file or the other option is to solder the capacitor off? That's insane because my unit was literally sold on amazon as the ender3 v2 bl touch v3.1.
(edit: unless you don't have a 32-bit board)
Get this exact kit: Amazon.com: Creality BLTouch V3.1 Auto Bed Leveling Sensor Kit for Ender3 V2/Ender 3/Ender 3 Pro/Ender 5/Pro with 32 Bit V4.2.2/V4.2.7 Mainboard 3D Printer: Industrial & Scientific
If you want a bl touch, get a kit like this one (or one similar)
I ordered this one as it said in the reviews it's the right one for the v2.
Comes with all the metal mounts for all the Enders and worked like a charm once I got it programmed.
I'm in the same boat. Just purchased the Ender 3 Max and I'm looking for a compatible Bl Touch. This is the 1 I bought. It says the 1 bracket is to be used with the Max. I'll find out in a few days. Good luck to you.
I recently purchased an Ender 3 V2 about a couple of weeks ago for a backup printer. I had the same problems with the left rear leveling screw. I saw that a bed wire was lodged between the strain relief and the bed. I adjusted the wire and was able to level the bed somewhat. I then did some research and made these two purchases.
This greatly simplified bed leveling and was able to print anything that I threw at it.
this one worked perfectly fine for me:
Note that the V2 mounting bracket included in this kit fits upside-down as well as right-side up. Don't make that mistake :D
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B08MD45N9H/ complete kit with brackets you know will fit.
This is the ender 3 v2 and bltouch 3.1 I purchased.
Original was [link]. But I messed up one of the wires so I got a replacement, [link]
This is the one I have (and it works great): [link]
That looks very tubular almost like the nozzle is too high. Trust me I've been there and it sucks all of your motivation is drained. But believe me investing in a BL Touch and PEI bed have been the best thing I have ever done also there's these cool spatula tools you can buy mine came in a kit that are a certain mm thick and it's supposed to help level the bed by sticking that in between the nozzle and the bed. But leveling will be the solution to almost all of your problems. After installing the BL touch I can probably go 100 prints before things start getting wonky and I need to relevel unless it gets moved around alot then I usually level when I'm done.
BL TOUCH and PEI magnetic bed will be your life savers
Here's links to the bl touch, the tool kit, and the PEI bed I have that works great (except with overture tough black PLA I can only get that to stick on an overture build surface 🤔🤔🤔)
This can be a little tricky but follow these simple directions
1. Get BL touch
2. Put firmware on an empty SD card (theres lots of them available but all you have to do is download it and put it on an empty SD card)
3. Put sd card in sd slot on printer (turned off) then turn it on and it will update automatically
4. Then level bed as best as you can 1-2 times
5. Auto home and adjust z offset
There's a youtube video that was super helpful to me and a guide I can find for you.
For this you just remove the bed down to the aluminum hot surface and stick the magnet on that and then the PEI bed goes on top most likely you'll need to relevel and adjust offsets because this is thinner than the glass bed
THESE ARE NOT AFFILIATE LINKS
in the center, closest to the BLTouch
> I'm getting sick of having to level my bed every other print,
have you tried the yellow springs. for most people they do the trick. take the money you save and get 2 rolls of filament.
Changes are your printer has a 4.2.2 board easy way to check is pull off the cover and see whats printed on it. if it does then you can get a V3.1 and its just 1 plug and a firmware update
this would be the one to get for a 4.2.2 / 4.2.7 board
I have tried this firmware and it does not work. The guide the provide as well does not show the same color wires I have.
For the BL, I got this. I used smith3d (For 4.2.7 Board 5×5)
So far I have not had an issue.
You don’t need the adapter board with the 4.2.2 board. The mainboard has a dedicated port. Make sure you buy the BLTouch that has the 5 pin connector. Not the 3 and 2 pins. Teaching tech has a straight forward video. It works the same way for the Ender 5.
About the 13:08 mark.
This is the setup that I have working on my Ender 3 V2.
This is the BLtouch I am using which has the single 5 pin connector for the v4.2.2 board.
The working firmware from Creality is this one from their site.
4.2.2 Ender-3 v2 Marlin2.0.1 BLtouchV1.1.1without adapter board firmware
This works great for just the BLtouch upgrade.
I agree with photomedic13, I got the Skophy branded one but it looks to be the same as his (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08MD45N9H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) with a faster delivery, at least for me!
Totally agree on the smith 3d instructions, and make sure you get the flat springs kit so that your bed doesn't drift on the factory crap springs. I like the 5x5 firmware, and the other edits that smith3d has made are nice (like putting a while box around the selection on the e3v2 screen so you can actually see your selection beyond a 5 degree viewing angle.
i found this one, it specifically says the v2, so its what i ordered, it comes with the mounting brackets which is nice.
this is the one I bought
