Just bought these (32 ohms and 105 dB/mW) to use with my LGv20 as my entrance to something that isn't an earbud.
I'll be using to listen to pretty much everything. Spotify (320 kbps), netflix, maybe even phone calls
Question: Do I need an amp of some sort, or an amp/DAC combo?

I'm not plugging my headphones into the amp, don't worry :p Amp is for my Micca speakers. I plug my headphones into the M-Audio device.
I'm currently using these, not sure how good they are.
Well, with open back you won't get any isolation practically. I'd take a look at some closed backs. As for sound signatures, highs are the trebles of music, mids are areas like most vocals, and instruments like saxophones, most strings and baritone horns, lows are the bass of music, midrange is the same thing as mids, warm means it emphasizes mids, bright means it emphasizes trebles and V-Shaped means it focuses on the bass and treble, leaving mids recessed * Take a look at the CAL!2s: http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Aurvana-Headset-Drivers-In-Line/dp/B00FC2R7ZW
I'm waiting on these to arrive. Been stuck with earbuds for over a year now so this will be awesome.
Oh yeah, mostly listen to grunge/alternative. Metal pops up sometimes. Every once in a while I'll get in the mood for some kind of electronica, but not so often anymore.
How dies this compare to the Creative Aurvana Live!2
posted there. nothing yet.
so these would be a good pickup? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FC2R7ZW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Budget - Less than 150 but around 100 preferably
Requirements for Isolation - Will use in library and in the gym
Preferred Type of Headphone - Closed ear, nothing too big and bulky
Preferred tonal balance - Dont matter
Past headphones - cheap 10 dollar in ears and apple in ears
Preferred Music - Metalcore so its bass heavy, alternative, War games (Battlefront,Battlefield)
Need a all around headphone that I can use in the gym(probably wont run with them just lift weights, game with them so I need a mic, and study sessions in my dorm/library.
Best thing I found http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Aurvana-Headset-Drivers-In-Line/dp/B00FC2R7ZW
From the faq but, I don't know if they are outdated and they seem a little bulky.
Also my friend has these and he says they're great http://www.amazon.com/SOL-REPUBLIC-Tracks-On-Ear-Headphones/dp/B005OLOIUI
Thanks for any suggestions
/u/Mad_Economist is currently a little busy, but with your needs he recommended the Creative Aurvana Live! 2.
It is a bass heavy headset that comes with a mic built into the cable. If you don't think thats enough, you can add a Zalman microphone for the remaining $10 that can be clipped onto the cable.
Here is a review by a highly regarded reviewer, ljokerl.
The summarisation of the review: "The CAL! 2 delivers a warm and lush sound with plenty of bass and good clarity"
Comfort is rated as 9.5/10 but noise isolation only as 6/10.
With a budget of a flexible $100, I picked up some Creative Aurvana Live 2's. It is very highly recommended on certain headphone websites, also on /r/headphones. The reason why it is such a BIFL-worthy item is because the headphone cable is detachable, meaning it is also replaceable if you ever get it caught in something. I don't know if the cable is proprietary or if there are replacements online. If it came down to it, Creative could mail you another one (if under warranty) or sell you a second one. I haven't ran into the issue yet. The build is fine and it has a 1 year warranty on it as well.
Also, to extend the life of your headphones, make sure to keep them on your desk and never wrap the cable tightly as that strains the cable.
