I like the Creative Options Thread Organizer. They are marketed to craft stores but these cases hold 48 cars. Each side has a double-sized slot which will hold the bigger ones like Hiway Hauler. The price on Amazon jumps between $7 and $11.
“Thread organizer” is the term. There are quite a few for $30ish, if you actually search “hot wheels case” but if you search Thread Organizer, this comes up for $15

My mom got me a thread organizer case for mine when I was a kid 25 years ago. I needed another one for my sons cars and found the exact one on amazon, it works perfect. Here is the link

I just started using this and it fits the bobbins nicely.
Very cool! I love that you opened them. I have about 200 i opened as well. I keep them in these https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Options-5315-Thread-Organizer/dp/B001IYMCJO/
I have more that i haven't opened... I open 2-4 each week. At this rate I'll never get to them all lol
You can order this thread organizer from amazon. Fits most cars well as long as they dont have huge protruding parts
amazon but it has gone up in price (used to be $25, is now $39 and so not worth it) and is no longer one-day delivery to where I live: https://www.amazon.ca/Creative-Options-5315-Thread-Organizer/dp/B001IYMCJO/ref=sr\_1\_2?keywords=creative+options+thread&qid=1637424602&sr=8-2
So, bobbin storage has slots almost the exact size of an assembled squadron. I lined mine in felt to protect paint. So it stops them from shifting. It also holds 96 of them between the two sides so you can separate different faction out. Excellent for storage.

Not OP, but it looks like they have the same case I do. Got it on Amazon and I love it! The bobbins fit very neatly if you insert them vertically as shown. (They do not fit horizontally unless you tilt them diagonally, but I prefer to have the tops of the bobbins with the DMC number visible, so vertical works well for me.) Also there are two sides to the case, so if you flip it over there is a whole additional layer of storage! I also like that on each side, one of the storage sections is bigger than the others, so I can store things like my scissors, markers, tweezers, etc.
These https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Options-5315-Thread-Organizer/dp/B001IYMCJO/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=creative%2Boptions%2Borganizer&qid=1566117651&s=gateway&sprefix=creative%2Bop&sr=8-3&th=1&psc=1 don’t pay more the) $13.50. 5 if you wanna display. 3-4 if you needed storage.
I use 2 of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001IYMCJO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 in a Thirty-One bag I was gifted. They plus the two plastic containers, and my canvas and felt all fit fine, with room for my ipad, and then the little pockets I put supplies.
This is what I use. The Creative Options Thread Organizer. It fits many paint jars and has a handy handle for carrying. I am about to expand my paint collection such that I will have to buy another, but it's still a manageable solution. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001IYMCJO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_0XngAbJFN0J41
Thread shouldn't be kept on those boards because of UV and it picks up dust. When you sew with dusty thread you are putting those particles into your machine and shortening it's life. I use the Plano 5315 storage boxes. They were originally developed for storing the Jammers diecast cars, but they are perfect for keeping both a large spool of thread and it's matching bobbin in one spot. It keeps the dust out and it's easy to tuck your thead collection away into a dark corner. This is the best solution I have come up with in my 40 odd years of sewing.
Plano 5315 Currently $11 on Amazon.
I bought one of these a couple years ago:
Exactly holds a complete DMC floss set, and looks wonderful doing it. I even got a label printer and made color number labels for my bobbins (the official DMC ones have horrible adhesive and fall off almost immediately).
BTW, $9 is the cheapest I've seen that organizer on Amazon for a while. I just bought another to hold the cheap Chinese DMC knockoff set I bought a few months ago for some color and colorfastness testing. I highly recommend them, especially if you have more than a few dozen bobbins to store.
I have this one, when I bought it a year ago, it was $6.87. It is currently $15 and change. I like the carrying handle
edit: currently cheaper at Joann's.
I can be a bit of a perfectionist sometimes and since I'm not 100% happy with my handwriting, it would bother me that all my 8's don't look the same when I handwrite them on bobbins.
The plastic bobbins are probably better in the long run since they're sturdier but I haven't gotten back into cross stitch long enough where there is wear and tear yet.
I have 3 of those cases right now, but I just ordered this case online from Amazon, and it's supposed to fit all of the DMC colors into it. Looking forward to putting it all in one box instead of 3!
Go big or go home (double sided box):
Bobbins:
Numbahs:
Here it is! I love these boxes.
This, OP. Creative options is available[when they are] at hobby lobby, amazon, craft stores, etc. It's a double-sided thread organizer but holds 48 cars perfectly. Probably need to find them in-store, but remember to use the coupon.
My SO says it is this one on Amazon. :)
Also glad I could help with the images! For the cases they're on Amazon and seem pretty popular amongst collectors.

It's this one from Amazon. It may be the motivation you need to wind your skeins onto bobbins because I don't think skeins would fit nicely without folding them.
If hes looking for storage, these are popular: https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Options-5315-Thread-Organizer/dp/B001IYMCJO
Premium lines are always nice as well: Car Culture is out at WalMart/Target. Pop Culture are cars with pop culture paint jobs.
I use these but I know I paid a lot less than they are going for on Amazon, that was many years ago though. I use them when I decide it's time to keep them from collecting dust from sitting on these shelves.
Thanks, and yes, I wasn't a fan at first but seeing the Speedtail in silver won me over. Here is the case: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B001IYMCJO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They are a little pricey for just plastic, but I haven't found anything better.
It's this item but look for other sellers as I actually bought this from a local art-supply store: https://www.amazon.ca/Creative-Options-5315-Thread-Organizer/dp/B001IYMCJO
I store my blisters in CLEAR tubs and my loose in the Jammer cases (like these). https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Options-5315-Thread-Organizer/dp/B001IYMCJO/ref=asc_df_B001IYMCJO/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=216504060462&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9626927407310110323&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9030019&hvtargid=pla-350168545344&psc=1
ID cars are pretty cool, but I only buy the castings I collect (mostly Corvettes).
It's this one from Amazon.

If you have or can borrow a power drill this short tutorial will help the bobbin winding go faster. I recommend unfurling the skein into 3 long lenghts kind of a squashed Z shape then start the drill. Keeps the thread from tangling. Oh, plastic or thick chipboard bobbins work best for this.
For the floss, separate the unmarked floss into piles that look like the same brand/type of thread. CXC floss is fuzzier than DMC or Anchor for example. If you're fairly certain all the unmarked floss is Anchor or DMC, hopefully you have a local shop that stocks those brands and you can take them with you and color match to find the floss #. I've done this with kits that I planned on stitching more than once because they came with the floss but not the floss #.(Apparently it's considered proprietary information even though they tell me it's DMC floss 🙄)
I use this plasic storage box 2 of them hold all my floss with left over space shop around I picked mine up a Michael's for around $10. a box. But go with what will work best for you!
I got this one! The other ones I saw on Amazon had compartments that were too small. Here it is!
Amazon FTW! I love that it is two sides and the hard plastic bobbins fit PERFECT!

Would totally suggest this case I got on Amazon. It’s double sided and fits A LOT of bobbins.

The cases are 13⁹³ on amazon
Hobby/craft stores. Go to the jewelry cases aisle. They make 2-sided cases that perfectly hold 25 cars per side (50 in a case). Or get it on Amazon
I use thread boxes (bought on amazon https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Options-5315-Thread-Organizer/dp/B001IYMCJO/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2EAEXXBBUQT9V&keywords=thread%2Bbox&qid=1581615075&s=arts-crafts&sprefix=thread%2Bbox%2Caps%2C192&sr=1-2&th=1 ) and DMC floss bobbins. It's all nice and neat!
you're welcome. Those are my favorite because they are already key holed for hanging. for bulk storage i use some of these, but haven't seen a good price on them lately: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001IYMCJO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For $63 you could have gotten 7 of these cases, each can hold around 48 small to medium sized cars
So that comes to about 336 cars
Looks like this thread organizer

Not big enough for thread sadly perfect for everything else. But I have had my eye on this: http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Options-5315-Thread-Organizer/dp/B001IYMCJO

This is what I (and most collectors) use, you can fit about 48 cars per case. Hiway hauler is a little smaller then each compartment
