Not OP, but thanks for the rec and thorough answer; I didn't know they have them available with a higher percentage of bleach at dentists' offices! To anyone who's interested, Amazon has a $5 off coupon for these at the moment
Funny thing is, white teeth isn't even normal. Teeth are suppose to be yellowish, the dental whitening industry has successfully managed to make white the norm.
You can try whitening strips, they are much cheaper. Whitening toothpaste is useless.

Finished 1 box. Didn’t tell anybody. Mom commented on how well I was brushing my teeth. 2 acquaintances have remarked that I have nice white teeth without prompting (happened a couple years after I finished the treatment).
Do take note that you should drink any staining liquids (coffee, tea, wine) with a straw and avoid the staining liquids touching your front teeth else it will take a couple weeks of thorough brushing to restore the whiteness. Best not to drink them while doing the treatment else it’s harder to tell if it’s actually working for you.
Someone I recommended this to said his teeth were sensitive while using it. I personally didn’t experience this but you can try waiting until they stop being sensitive to use the next strip.
It’s been 5 years since doing it and my teeth has maintained the whiteness. Make sure to maintain with good brushing preferably using an electric toothbrush. A basic one costs $40 at NTUC.

So my evening routine: (morning is just a brush and mouthwash with glam white products)
- Brush with Sensodyne, this helps out with any sensitivity. Since using this I've had zero issues.
- 30 min White strips with blue light (just use the MySmile tooth tray with no gel, the light still activates the peroxide)
- 20-30min Whitening gel with tray & light, using a brush/pick to get gel into the corners of teeth.
- Brush with Glam white toothpaste.
- Rinse with Glam white mouthwash.
edit: Forgot to add, the strips attach much better to me if I dry out my teeth/mouth with a towel first. If the teeth the strips go on is too wet or covered in spit, the strips fall off in my experience.

The Smile Titan Teeth Whitening Gel is a good cheap replacement for the gel in the mysmile kit. This routine has made my smile drastically whiter. It's not a bad idea to start with a professional whitening if you're in super terrible shape, but the above has worked well for me and isn't terribly expensive.

Okay I’ll list everything I can think of:
- You should be washing your hair every 2-3 days, but may need to do it daily if it looks oily. Different brands of shampoo & conditioner will have different effects on your hair so shop around to find what suits you best. If you have curly hair use curly hair products. Women’s hair products usually work better. If you have flakes use a dandruff shampoo. Try out differently styling products to get the look you want. My husband uses Shea Moisture Curl Smoothie to style his hair daily. He says it doesn’t make his hair look greasy like gels do. You can also look into pomades.
- You should be having haircuts on a regular schedule even if you’re growing it out to keep the shape sharp. Your barber will tell you how often to come.
- For skincare the basics are a face wash, facial moisturizer & facial sunscreen (make sure it says it’s for the face instead of the body), lip balm and an acne treatment if needed. If you want product recommendations r/skincareaddiction can give them to you.
- If you want to be clean shaven shave daily. If you want facial hair then clean up the sides every couple days. Use shaving cream and apply lotion afterwards.
- Dental products are floss, an electric toothbrush, tongue scraper and alcohol-free mouthwash. Brush twice a day and floss once. If you haven’t been to the dentist recently go there for a cleaning to make sure you don’t have cavities or plaque that is causing bad breath. I also recommend picking up a pack of Crest Whitestrips (scroll down to see before & after pics). When you brush your teeth run the toothbrush gently over your wet lips to get the dry skin off. Apply lip balm afterward while your lips are still wet to seal in the moisture.
- Shower daily. Body care is body wash, a washcloth, a back scrubber if you can’t reach and body lotion/cream. Hands are not enough to get your body clean. You need a washcloth to scrub yourself down. Scrub every part of yourself, under every fold, scrub your butt crack with soap (use a separate washcloth for this), scrub your privates and scrub your feet/armpits. Do not just let water run over an area and consider it clean. I use these washcloths for my body. Use a new one for each shower and hang it to dry before putting it in dirty laundry so it won’t mildew. Shaving pubic hair can help you feel fresher, but if you do so make sure you put on lotion afterwards so you don’t get razor bumps. After your shower make sure your body and any folds are completely dry or they will smell. Make sure you change out your body towels every 2-3 uses or they will make you smell too. If your skin is dry, apply lotion after your shower while your skin is still damp in that area to seal in the moisture. You can apply body lotion after every shower all over too if you prefer.
- Use an antiperspirant, not a simple deodorant. It will say what it is on the package. Apply daily after every shower once your armpits are dry. Look up body powders for areas you need to keep dry as well. If you want to use a cologne or body spray use 2-3 sprays so it’s not overpowering.
- When you have a bowel movement use wipes (don’t flush them even if they say flushable— it’s bad for your septic) or get a bidet attachment for your toilet. Wiping with dry toilet paper is not enough to get off the fecal matter.
- Change underwear and socks daily, and possibly twice a day if you get especially sweaty. Change your outfit daily too and wash your sheets once a week.
- Trim your finger and toenails once a week. If your toenails look unhealthy (yellow or with cracks) get an anti-fungal nail treatment from the store. If your feet look unhealthy, look up pics to see if you need an athlete foot treatment. Besides that get a foot file that removes dead skin and apply lotion afterward. You can do this once a month or as needed.

However, once all cavities, gum disease, and any other medical issues have been addressed, there are a number of cosmetic options available to improve your smile!
You cited concerns with yellowing- i would highly recommend crest whitening strips!. Anecdotally, I’ve used these and have several friends who have as well, all who have had great outcomes.
You can also use whitening toothpaste, though in my personal experience whitening toothpastes are good at keeping stains from re-accumulating, but don’t do a ton for removing stains that are already there.
If you have cosmetic concerns with crookedness, Smile Direct Club is an excellent and affordable option (compared to traditional braces or Invisalign) that I can personally recommend. Keep in mind, Smile Direct can really only help with cosmetic stuff- this treatment can’t address big structural issues like crossbites, but it’s great for getting the front teeth (top and bottom) in order.
Again, please make sure you’ve addressed any cavities or structural/medical problems first before moving to addressing the cosmetic things, but i hope this information is helpful to you when you are at this point!

Yeah but what about the before and after pics of people who've whitened their yellow teeth? For example the amazon url below. Look at customer images. Some people there had bad yellow teeth in the before pics and their teeth are white now. I'm playing devil's advocate to find the better alternative for myself. Let me know what you think please.
