I got mine used and it was pretty shot, light scratches etc. I bought that little dropper of oloephobic coating stuff off amazon and applied it a couple nights in a row, and it worked pretty well. I also tried Smitty’s glass wax, but saw no difference.
The stuff I mentioned isn’t magic but it does work pretty well. Definitely worth trying. Gotta keep applying, since it’s temporary, but they only give you a tiny amount.
Yeah no worries! I don't think this one says anything about other than glass either, but I could be wrong. Its working great, I even put in on the track pad and the fingerprint key. Its a very light coating that drys instantly and has no discernible effect on the finish. Link
I have the same problem. I'm thinking of buying this. I'll first ask some repair shops if they can do anything without replacing glass or adding a screen protector to hide it.
Just to check, you can clean the screen to the point that the damage is completely invisible, but as soon as you smudge the screen, the damaged area is dirtier than the rest right?
It sounds like you're referring to the factory-applied oleophobic coating which is what causes the water to bead up and roll off. It also (mainly) keeps fingerprints off the screen, and makes it silky smooth to use.
It wears naturally as you use it, they don't last as long as I'd like either because that half-coated screen feeling is a bit annoying. There are kits on Amazon to redo the coating yourself. I'm not sure if that is a service Samsung offers, but worth looking into.
I applied this to my screen per a guide I found on ifixit this past weekend and I'm satisfied with the results. I would recommend doing two coats per their instructions with a day in between.
Fingerprint Oleophobic Coating - it’s the reason a new phone screen feels ‘newer’ to your finger tips.

You can apply a fresh layer of oleophobic coating. They have oleophobic kits on the market.
This was first product that appeared in my search results (no idea if it's good or not): https://www.amazon.com/Crystal-Armor-Fingerprint-Oleophobic-Coating/dp/B00LKYW6M0
I've never tried as mine screen still has some oleophobic coating left, so if you do go this route, would be great if you post the results of your experience.
The Smitty's Glass Wax I linked above is supposedly good. I don't know if it's actually an oleophobic coating, but the reviewers I've seen say it makes the glass slick again.
Another is this one that is advertised as an oleophobic kit. https://www.amazon.com/Crystal-Armor-Fingerprint-Oleophobic-Coating/dp/B00LKYW6M0/
https://www.amazon.com/Crystal-Armor-Fingerprint-Oleophobic-Coating/dp/B00LKYW6M0
It's really easy. Just put like 5 drops on the spot that's worn down, then quickly smear it around with a plastic bag over your finger since it evaporates quickly. Let it sit overnight and it's good as new in the morning.
There's a Japanese one on Amazon. I haven't used it myself, but people who followed the instructions got good results. (Read the reviews and questions to see what to do with it if you can't read Japanese. Most of the bad reviews are from people who applied it wrong.)
You can buy a coating on Amazon. This Japanese one promises 滑り性UP "slipperiness up", among other features. Note, however, that an oleophobic coating is not a screen protector. It just prevents oils from adhering to the screen. If you're scratching the phone, you need a screen protector.
I'm not sure. Normally it shouldn't have affected the coating itself. Like I said, maybe the protector you have just never had an oleophobic coating at all.
Edit: if you need to, there's this I found on Amazon.com
https://www.amazon.com/Crystal-Armor-Fingerprint-Oleophobic-Coating/dp/B00LKYW6M0
Try using this to touch it up.
Or use car wax. I've used it on older phones with good results.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LKYW6M0/ You can buy your own and reapply for relatively cheap. It's normal for it to wear with time. 2 months is a bit short though and I would expect that it was misapplied by the factory. But I don't think that it's worth going without a phone for weeks for something you can do yourself.
I use this: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00LKYW6M0/
It works... OK. If you apply it for 3 nights in a row, the oleophobic layer can last for ~3 months - then you have to reapply it.
One thing I noticed, is that sweat absolutely destroys the coating (maybe from salt?). I stopped carrying my phone with display facing my leg, and the coating is lasting for much longer.
The oleophobic coating can be sought and takes research to find it. Is that what you're asking? I only found one supplier, but I'm sure there are more. https://www.ebay.com/p/Fusso-Smartphone-Fingerprint-Oleophobic-Coating-Kit-3ml-W-cloth/1939117730?iid=111877001832&chn=ps&ul_ref=https%253A%252F%252Frover.ebay.com%252Frover%252F1%252F711-117182-37290-0%252F2%253Fmpre%253Dhttps%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.ebay.com%25252Fp%25252FFusso-Smartphone-Fingerprint-Oleophobic-Coating-Kit-3ml-W-cloth%25252F1939117730%25253Fiid%25253D111877001832%252526chn%25253Dps%2526itemid%253D111877001832%2526targetid%253D411413051500%2526device%253Dm%2526adtype%253Dpla%2526googleloc%253D9007795%2526poi%253D%2526campaignid%253D1425762668%2526adgroupid%253D54746042863%2526rlsatarget%253Dpla-411413051500%2526abcId%253D1139066%2526merchantid%253D112331818%2526pt%253D%2526gclid%253DCjwKCAjworfdBRA7EiwAKX9HeNuaZnwoVgnlJU0TmpN_jXlrztQmUGtyDXe9gL1FfHnVug1dDB0IYhoCMgwQAvD_BwE%2526srcrot%253D711-117182-37290-0%2526rvr_id%253D1683993695881%2526rvr_ts%253D1f2819f41660a99c01d7e116fff9e2ce BTW. That link is crazy long. I think the product is an import too.
Found on Amazon too https://www.amazon.com/Crystal-Armor-Fingerprint-Oleophobic-Coating/dp/B00LKYW6M0

Or simply go nano glass liquid protector. My note 8 DID wear out coating on the home button area and smeared like you. look here https://www.spigen.com/products/screen-protector-glas-tr-nano-liquid
made by spigen as in cases.
Everything feels fine! No texture differences or anything. I used Disso3 Crystal Armor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LKYW6M0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_9SMYZSYGV2TWJ93H1SXH?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Definitely looks like the Oleophobic coating has worn off. You can reapply it yourself if you'd like- about $20 on amazon, will last basically forever. Works on phones too. https://www.amazon.com/Crystal-Armor-Fingerprint-Oleophobic-Coating/dp/B00LKYW6M0
FYI, I saw someone say that they used this kit to refresh their oleophobic layer. I can't speak from firsthand experience though.

That's the one I use. I use like 5 drops and only do it once a month or so. Looks like it will last forever at that rate.
I saw where someone said you could use this to repair the oleophobic layer yourself.
I believe you can buy a kit on Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/Crystal-Armor-Fingerprint-Oleophobic-Coating/dp/B00LKYW6M0
