Pick a country, region, time period, person, major event (eg. war) and start reading books on them.
As an example, this was a very thorough read on the history of Cuba, and it wasn't just about the revolution. This one is a little dated but the subject matter is still quite relevant today. Robert Service has written some very good books on the Soviet Union and has a set on Stalin, Lenin and Trotsky that are fascinating.
