I use this carrier. Enough room to hold my fully assembled paramotor and a gas can. Just attach some sort of tube to it that you can slide a wind sock in if you want to.
It's made by Curt. Doesn't block the lights and we simply relocate the license plate to the back of the basket (drilled 2 holes)
Thanks for posting this. I went with a very similar carrier and I think the same bag. I added reflective tape to the back and sides since my carrier doesn't have the lights. It is easy to use and I think it won't be as hard to store as a roof top carrier since it is very slim.

I used CURT 18110 48 x 20-Inch Tray... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JF53ZEE?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share with this CURT 18110 48 x 20-Inch Tray... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JF53ZEE?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share. Basically no hit to efficiency. Stuck with 1 1/4.
Thanks! Both the hitch and the carrier are Curt's. I went with a smaller carrier for fear of going over the tongue weight.

I can access the hatch with this load. If I go any higher (or closer to the car) it would not open.
