I’ve been using this one for about a year with no issues. Was also looking at Park Tool options but got this from Amazon for $80 USD on sale. I also like that it collapses down and takes up minimal space in the garage.
I have several feedback sports products, but yeah unless you are transporting it a lot, the extra sturdiness isn't worth the cost. The bikehand stand i have was like $90 on Amazon, and has been going strong for 2 years of twice a week use now, and the clamp is superior to all but the most expensive FS stand, which are, what, triple the price?
>Cheap repair stands have crap adjustments, fold poorly (if at all), have weak and hard to adjust heads, and are generally not very stable, which is a serious issue when tuning a drivetrain for example
The bikehand stand definitely has none of these issues
The park tool videos on youtube are very well done and easy to follow for a beginner. If you feel like doing it yourself, you can save the money paying someone for a tune up and put it towards a bike stand on Amazon and do it yourself and watch the videos (assuming you have a bit of time).
Thank you for the list. I just ordered bikehand stand. Hope it last for a while. Please clarify what torque wrench to start with. You are saying get a wrench that clicks in place when you get to the set torque? and preferably a low torque one from 2-15Nm? Thanks again for your help.
I bought this one from Amazon. Venzo Pro Mechanic Bicycle/Bike Repair Rack Stand Wanted something with a small footprint when setup. So far it has been working great for me but most of the time I've been clamping it on the top tube of my hard tail which is also the balance point. So haven't tested it out clamping other things, like the the seat post.
I got one off Amazon it really surpassed my expectations. Ive had two different bikes on it and it did not fall over. Works for me. It appears youre not in US but nobody replied so figured i would. https://www.amazon.com/Bikehand-Mechanic-Bicycle-Repair-Stand/dp/B00D9B7OKQ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1517619329&sr=8-4&keywords=bike+stand
I bought this one on Amazon and I'm pretty happy with it. I've definitely used better stands than this one, but you can't beat the price. I use it at home for quick jobs like you mentioned and also for cleaning my bikes.
I have this bike stand,
Venzo Bikehand Pro Mechanic Bicycle/Bike Repair Rack Stand https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D9B7OKQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_LMfKBb6584VV5
I dig it.
I don't use a torque wrench. I know I should but everything on the bike is such low torques (speaking from the perspective of someone who works on cars and industrial equipment) that I just make sure everything feels "right" to me... Haven't broken anything or had anything fail on me out on a ride yet... But that doesn't mean you shouldn't get a torque wrench if you want to do it right. As far as torque wrench set go even the expensive ones are cheap compared to the torque wrenches I'm used to using... So cheap/expensive are relative terms. I'd probably buy something mid range with good reviews on Amazon, personally.
How often are you working on your bike(s) because that is a huge outlay of cash.
If you have several bikes that you work on a lot of the time or you plan on servicing/currently service bikes for money then I'd say go for it otherwise I recommend something cheaper like this Bikehand one (not sure if available in the USA) instead.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D9B7OKQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I have this one. It's well built and works. The clamp is a bit fiddly for clamping the seat tube, you have to screw it in because the jaw opening is too small, but it's ok for home use.
Looks like the same one I have under a different brand. It works, but I wish the clamp opened up more so I didn't have to unscrew it to get the bike in and out. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D9B7OKQ/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_3RCK4F0D82ADTF92QE8P?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I have a Park Tool PRS-25 (100 lb rated). It is incredibly sturdy for a portable stand, but also very expensive. A friend of mine bought this Bike Hand Repair Stand (55 lb rated) on Amazon for less than half the cost. It works great, but there are some key differences.
The main one is in the way that the rotation works on the clamp head. The Park Tool uses a friction cone. This means you can loosen it up slightly, but maintain some friction as you rotate your bike, then clamp it down. The Bike Hand uses an interlocking zig-zag pattern on two surfaces that clamp together. It's either completely free, or completely locked. No in between.
I also like the way the park tool stand folds a little bit better. The Bike Hand stand folds very similarly, but the Park Tool one just feels smoother. This could be down to the individual unit.
One thing I did like was that the Bike Hand came with a tool shelf, but I had to buy that separately with the Park Tool.
Lastly, the Park Tool is definitely the stronger stand. The tubing diameter on the PRS-25 is massive, but interestingly, it's not that much heavier. IMO, the Bike Hand is probably a bit under-rated at 55 lbs, but I do believe the Park Tool could hold 100 lbs.
Having a repair stand has been such a game changer for my home repair routine. I find myself doing a lot more maintenance now that I'm not kneeling down on the floor or flipping my bike over to do work on it. I actually really enjoy my time spent working on my bike now.
I use one of these:

Found to be best bang for buck, and high build quality. Had it for 3 years+, no issues.

I've only seen praise for it and it's cheaper than the park ones

It’s life changing.
I have this one and it’s been really great. Couple of my buddies have it, too.
I picked it up at a garage sale for like $30 but it’s on amazon for $120
Bikehand Bike Repair Stand (Max 55 lbs) - Home Portable Bicycle Mechanics Workstand - for Mountain Bikes and Road Bikes Maintenance https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D9B7OKQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_P0XN5KC9CE33GPA5QE8G
Nothing against park tool except their prices.
That said: this stand has been absolutely phenomenal for the price. Think I got it for $100 a couple years ago. You give up quick clamping and save a lot of money. Well worth the savings to me for something I don’t use that often.
A bike repair stand also really helps as you can take the wheels off etc. but I understand that these can get pretty pricey. I have this one and I cannot recommend it enough.
I don't know, but there are dozens like this one on Amazon. I like mine better to be honest. It's also an Amazon brand, but the mechanism that keep the hand from rotation is sturdier.
I have this one and the teeth that interlock together are great.
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00D9B7OKQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glc_i_W861KDC45K765642VZRX
The one on the photo uses a pressure clamp and it can slip easily with heavier bike like a full suspension.
I have used 2 stands. One is a cheap $50 amazon stand the other is a Park Tool stand I found on craigslist. The Cheap stand work, it is taller but less stable. I prefer grabbing the seat post than grabbing the top tube so the cheap stand will rotate to balance the bike. I cannot get the chain horizontal to run though a chain cleaner. It will always settle to an angle. If it doesnt bother you than a cheap stand works. bike hand has a stand that was $90 now $100 that the head is teethed to prevent rotation. I was going to get that one before I found the Park Tool Stand on Craigslist.
Any stand will be usable but some might be less stable than others or give you a headache. There is a point you pay for what you get before it turns into you pay for the name.
For me it would probably be my bike stand. I bought a Bikehand Bike Repair Stand due to all the great reviews on Amazon. The bike stand is definitely not a piece of junk, but the mechanism that allows for rotation is just plastic teeth that are clamped together (which you can see in the Amazon photos with the picture that says 360 deg). When you're working on the bike and putting any kind of (even light) torque on the frame those plastic teeth make a lot of noises from the stress. It's only a matter of time until they give out. If I had to do it over again I would have just bitten the bullet and gotten a Park Tool stand. It's a shame because otherwise the stand is an amazing value. I've got a mix of Park Tool and other expensive brands as well as cheap tools (Harbor Freight). So far I haven't had to re-buy anything.
Something like this bike repair stand would probably be ideal https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00D9B7OKQ/
I've got a good workbench with a heavy duty vice on it already. I just clamp a few feet of galvanized 2" square tubing into it that I've wrapped and ziptied a rag around one end, and hang the frame off that. It leaves me sitting on the floor while working on it and I haven't gone through anything more than basic chain cleaning and lubing, but I just bought the bike and dropping money on the stand and tools all at once so soon would get me a divorce. Making do with what I've got as it does the trick for now and, as rust997 mentioned, just going to buy the other tools as I need them.
Metric Allen keys, T25 and T30 are going to cover most of your immediate needs. May be a good idea to get ahold of a torque wrench that is good for small measurements (Newton Meters to save conversions) because the torque specs I've had to deal with so far are roughly half what my "tiny" torque wrench can set as a minimum. (Side question to the experienced bike wrenchers: do you guys just snug those small torque spec bolts by hand and call it close enough? Flip chip for example)
I have a Bikehand stand from Amazon. Love it. Now I ask myself why I waited so long to get one.
hey boss man, why is it bad to hard clamp frame tubes? I have https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D9B7OKQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and i put it in my top tube (cross bar). Is this not good to store it that way? Thanks for your help and time
edit: i also only have a single speed bianchi that is super beat up from 7 years of riding (got it for $300 on craigslist back in the day), but i am just curious what is wrong with clamping the top tube or frame tubes for storage and/or workstations
I bought this one earlier this year, it was on sale. Folds up pretty neatly and is sturdy. I don't use the handy little tool tray that came with it.
Bikehand Pro Mechanic Bicycle Repair Rack Stand
Lots of good reviews on Amazon. It's listed as $89 right now, I think I paid $70?
Well, if it makes you feel better, me and my partner have had very little bike fixing experience, we've had to learn it all ourselves.
The bike comes 95% assembled:
We ended up getting a bike repair stand which does a great job of holding the bike if you take the battery off first. My partner and i swapped out our tires to some semi-slicks and have since learned how to replace flats on our own. We are still pretty slow -- it takes us 30-45 minutes to take off and reinstall a tire but we're getting faster! This is coming from someone who is not very mechanically inclined either.
They also include a variety of tools (tire levels, etc) that you can use for maintenance, so you don't have to worry too much about going out and buying it yourself -- we had to go to our local hardware store because their toolkits were out of stock at the time.
I have one of these, though it's always difficult to say how much of a difference +/- ~$50 makes. Reviews on the lower end one seems to mention issues with the clamp often, but the clamp on this one definitely feels extremely solid. Few of the reviews on this one mention issues with collar at the telescopic bit; I'm about 6 months in and moderate use, and haven't noticed signs of it thus far.
Essentially looks like I'm deciding between a PCS-10 for $180, or something off craigslist, or this http://www.amazon.com/Bikehand-Mechanic-Bicycle-Repair-Stand/dp/B00D9B7OKQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1455225733&sr=8-3&keywords=bike+repair+stand
for like $90. Looking at Nashville and surrounding areas craigslist isn't showing much promise thus far.
$90.00 seems expensive but it is on the cheaper end of the scale and is definitely the same quality as the $140.00 Park Tools stand. This thing is rock solid and I'm able to get tougher components off (like bottom brackets) without worrying about putting too much stress on the stand itself. I needed this because I live in a small apartment so I needed to collapse it and it is pretty light.
A stand is really a massive convenience thing and you can do most basic maintenance without one (I did for two years until I overhauled my bike and it was impossible without one). I got to the point where I was able to spend $90 and not be upset that that money didn't go toward my bike directly so this could be a "down the road" purchase.
Also, derailleurs are tricky beasts and I still have a hard time getting it right but don't be embarrassed to take it into the shop after tinkering if you can get it right.
I recently purchased this bike maintenance stand. It holds my tt bike by the seat post (even my flat 'aero' post). It's "ok". I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.
Your bike tech is correct, but the two options that /u/skot123 mentions above are great. I especially like the DYI option and if I could return the stand, that's the path I'd take. Alas I've already thrown the box away.
i'm happy with this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Venzo-Mechanic-Bicycle-Repair-Stand/dp/B00D9B7OKQ
i would buy a higher end one if i was working at a shop and using it all day every day, but for 1-2 times a week that i use it, it's doing great, and it has all the bells and whistles of a $250 professional stand
I asked the same question myself a couple weeks ago and most of the recommendations were to just save up for the Park stand. However I couldn't really justify spending $140 on a repair stand alone.. so I just got this.
It's not great but I can't tell if the problems I have with this would be any different on a Park stand but who knows. Anyway it does what it was intended to do perfectly fine. I use it maybe once or twice max every two weeks and no real complaints. It feels solid and folds up nicely too!
I think I have the X-Tools one, here is the one I purchased from Amazon. I've had zero issues and used it to build my current road. It came with a magnetized tray that I have yet to use.
Just search "Bike work stand".
Plenty of options. I'm looking at getting this one: http://www.amazon.com/BIKEHAND-Cycle-Mechanic-Bicycle-Repair/dp/B00D9B7OKQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=cycling&ie=UTF8&qid=1408986564&sr=1-1&keywords=bike+stand
$90. The cheaper ones I saw went for $55. I'm not sure what that converts to in Europe money.
Bikehand Amazon. I use this one, works great
Cleaning your bike in NYC is not the easiest thing to do, but it's doable.
Personally, I clean my bike on the sidewalk outside my apartment building.
Here are the things that I use:
I wouldn't recommend washing your bike in the shower -- it is really difficult to thoroughly clean your bike and you're more likely to get water in certain parts of the bike that ideally should always stay dry.
Had the same issue. Bought a repair stand, anchors to frame. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D9B7OKQ/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_search\_asin\_title?ie=UT

I'm using a bikehand pro stand, 90 on amazon. Not the cheapest or the most expensive. I was surprised by how high quality it actually is, especially the part that clamps on the bike, it's a great design.
Here it is holding the bike I am working on.
The combined weight of everything in that picture is about 60lbs. Heavier than that and you probably need some fancy park tool stand, but if your bike is 52 this one will hold it no problem.
I made one of the pipe-clamp style ones a few years back. Not sure what plans I used, but this guy's youtube video shows more or less how I did it.

It was....okay. i mean, it worked. But to be honest, for the ~$30-40 I spent on the pipe clamp, pipe, fittings, etc and the time I put into it, I'd have been better off buying a cheap Amazon/ebay stand for $50-100. Which is what I eventually bought. But, that said, the DIY one did work.
I have the Bikehand stand, it's really solid, don't have a single complaint:

Shoot. I was just eyeing the Bikehand Bike Repair Stand. $113.98 with the 5% off coupon, with good reviews. $100 cheaper than the comparable Park Tool Bike Repair Stand.

Don't have anything as a reference but it is somewhat tippy but manageable nonetheless. Perhaps sandbags would solve that issue?
I don't think I would trust a 40 dollar stand on my bike but this one has served me well over the last year, Bikehand Bike Repair Stand. Its about 150 dollars less then the Park Tool version

We got it on amazon and really like it!
“Bike hand” brand re branded. By heaps of companies. They were 100$ aud before covid. I’ve used mine every day for 3 years can’t fault it
Just recently replaced it with a superb professional stand which has a 24kg solid steel plate base.
The lack of stability of the tripod stands is there main detraction. Gotta be careful not to unbalance it especially with a wheel off
Impossible ti say the 500$ superb is 400$ better but it has absolutely every conceivable option and adjustment indexing anyone could want
Edit - Cycle Pro Mechanic Bicycle Repair... https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00D9B7OKQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Like I said they are rebranded by oooooooodles of companies. Super duper value and the best option under 500$ in my opinion
Edit again- I’m a moron and didn’t notice truing stand. I’ll leave the comment cause it might help someone
I like to buy once cry once I spent the bucks for a park ts 2.2. I love building wheels, end up making more then a handful a year. Ztto digital spoke tensiometer are only 60$ from AliExpress these days and combined with a home made calibration jig parts about 100$ . A deadly combo -

Here is mine. Works like a charm and is a little over $100.
I realized I need to buy some stuff to maintain my bike, and was looking for some input on what to get for the 'essentials'.
I need a repair stand. I was thinking about this model from Amazon. Seems to have decent reviews. I have a step-through bike so I guess I just hold it by the seat post and that's fine?
I also wanted to adjust my saddle position and the seat post length, do I need a torque wrench for this? I found this one. Should I just get a fixed torque one? Or just use normal hex keys and save my money?
For cleaning the chain and drive train, is it worth getting one of those special chain cleaning tools and cycle specific degreaser or can I just use "LA's Totally Awesome" cleaner and degreaser from Dollar Tree and a couple of floor scrub brushes held together? The Dollar Tree product I have already because I use it diluted as a general cleaner. At full strength it can soften certain plastics and remove some paints so it's pretty strong.
Is there any other stuff that I'm missing that I need for basic maintenance that I'm missing?
The feedback sports stand(s) get a lot of love.
But some friends and I have this Bikehand one from amazon. Pretty well reviewed and has worked fine for me over the past year:
https://www.amazon.com/Bikehand-Mechanic-Bicycle-Repair-Stand/dp/B00D9B7OKQ/
that looks like the exact same stand I bought from amazon, rebranded as bikehand. It came with the tool tray. Works pretty well, and folds up easy.

Cleaning your bike in NYC is not the easiest thing to do, but it's doable.
Personally, I clean my bike outside my apartment building.
Here are the things that I use:
Bikehand Foldable Bike Repair Stand - makes it way easier to properly wash the bike
Soap + Degreased + Lube
A bucket
Two car sponges. One of the frame and one for the chain and the hub.
Some sort of sprayer -- these things are generally pretty cheap, but super handy. I use this one
You can also purchase this bike cleaning kit
I know you're shopping used, but I figure I'd put this out there just in case. I bought this off Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D9B7OKQ
It held my older, heavy, steel-frame 18" MTB just fine. I've since bought a new bike with aluminum frame and it mounts even better.
It folds up very well so I can store it in my garage. For just less than $100, I am pleased with it, though some might shudder at the thought of paying that much for a stand.
What repair stands do you all use? I'm thinking about one of these 2.
Bikehand Pro Mechanic Bicycle Repair Rack Stand http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D9B7OKQ/
or
Feedback Sports Recreational Repair Stand https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CQTVYQ2
Are these cheaper ones good enough or are the nicer ones worth the extra cost? This will be for casual repairs and adjustments.
It works well and is cheaper than something like a Park Tool. It holds up my fatbike with no issues, so seems pretty sturdy.
One of these helps.
