I did a quick search but didn't see any 18 count plastic canvas or vinyl aida. I've used 14 count plastic canvas
I think the exact metal type I used is pretty old. I don't see them for sale anywhere. My friend got it from a craft thrift store (that I must visit now). I've seen some fabric Aida ones at Joanne's, but I prefer to use this, I prefer the white ove the clear but this stuff can be difficult to find, unfortunately.
I use size 14 plastic mesh, I did have to order it from amazon because my Joann’s doesn’t carry that size. It also feels more comfortable to work with than most plastic canvas I’ve tried
I bought it on Amazon, but I've seen it at Joanne's as well.
Oh yeah! Get this kind, just like Aida only on plastic canvas, easy to cut, done with thread and looks nice.
I used scissors and went really slowly. I also used this plastic canvas
I used plastic canvas that I got from Amazon (make sure it's 14ct, I made the mistake of ordering 7ct canvas and it ended up being too big)
After I finish stitching, I cut around the model leaving 1 space around it roughly like this then I whip stitch around it like you see in the finished keychains.
As for how I keep the back that way, I stitch with 1 thread twice each stitch (the 2nd stitch is what makes the back look somewhat the same as the front) then when I run out of thread, I run it under other stitches. You can refer to the sub's guide on anchoring a short tail for better visualisation. Just make sure you run it under the same colors if you can, I didn't which is why you can see some lighter or darker colored threads underneath on the back.
I know I'm throwing a lot at you at once but if you have more questions feel free to ask me or others on this sub, they've been immensely helpful to me.
I used this. The evil store (Hobby Lobby) has it a lot cheaper ($2 near me) but only has white, I uses clear here. I love this stuff. :)
I always use Darice 14 count plastic canvas (example listing: https://www.amazon.com/Darice-Mesh-Clear-Plastic-Canvas/dp/B00114M18S). This is the highest count i've ever been able to find for plastic mesh listings. I like using it because it is more sturdy compared to some other brands that are more flimsy. i usually get full coverage if i'm careful with my stitches using 2 strands, but if i want full coverage i use 3 strands.
i've done a lot of projects using this material including these two:

good luck!
I use this! I love using it but I prefer the white mesh over the clear. It can be a pain to find.
This is what I’ve used here it’s called perforated plastic.
Oh... yeah, that happens. It's okay if it's not perfectly flat to be honest, you can sort of catch the roots.
You could try using a feeder ring? The solution I actually have is a one-inch strip of craft mesh held in place with zip tie suction cups to keep all my floaters to the right 1/3rd of my aquarium.
