yeah I bought a 10 pack of plasctic canvas from Amazon for this and other projects
it's just a 50p flickering tea light LED.
Wasn't sure it'd be strong enough but it works ok
Can anyone recommend an aquarium safe craft mesh? I recently purchased these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DV68A9I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ihr2ybBVGY17T
Then when they arrived I realized I didn't check to see if they were safe. No information on the grade of this plastic that I can see. I was hoping to use this to fix any lid gaps and to create dividers to keep my floaters in one area.
Its secured to plastic canvas (link: http://smile.amazon.com/Darice-Plastic-Canvas-Clear-12-Pack/dp/B00DV68A9I?ie=UTF8&keywords=plastic%20canvas&qid=1465453848&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1 ) and when I was securing the moss I just knew my substrate is about two inches so I left the bottom two and a half bare and stuck that end in to the substrate. It took a couple of tries to get it close enough to the back glass to look proper.
Edit: It stays upright be cause the plastic canvas wants to float. I tried buying cheap suction cups on Amazon so I didn't have to stick the mesh in to the substrate but they were garbage and didn't work. To get ones that work are expensive. I'm not sure if enough moss growth will weight the mesh down and it will fall over but if it down I will just trim it or bring my water level down and glue the mesh to the glass. One day I'll get suction cups to experiment but I'm saving up for a CO2 set up right now.
Yes, they need both a fresh and salt pool deep enough to submerge. The reason being is that they like a salinity in their shell, each crab likes it different and will dunk in both to their desired salinity. Sponges are a big no, you are right. Craft mesh is what most people use as a ramp, it is a plastic mesh you can get off of Amazon or at a craft store. Here is an example of what I am talking about (it is MUCH cheaper in a craft store). You just cut it to size, anchor one end in the sand, and the other in the dish with a rock or something. The pools don't need to be made of anything fancy, I use extra small kritter keepers and they are about 5 inches deep and fit my fairly large hermit crabs well. Tupperware also works. Here is a video of one of my crabs in their kritter keeper pool with a craft mesh bridge: https://www.instagram.com/p/B12ZaeHnPHi/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
Plastic mesh sheets that you can find at any arts and craft store or amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DV68A9I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_hJKCEbWBV571R
And binding bars:

Could you maybe use some plastic canvas and binder bars to give the lid its own separate divider? Cut the canvas to fit the sloped top, pinch it in the bars, and glue those to the lid to hold it in place.
