You can make flawless diamonds in a lab and in order to make them seem more “natural” the diamond makers can control the level of defects or impurities which alter the color and the clarity. Different impurities cause various colors. The whole chocolate (or brown as geologists call it) and orange diamond market was just good marketing to sell lower quality stones for more than they would normally be worthy which wasn’t much before the trend started. Synthetic diamonds are about $800 per carat which is about 10% (I think, I don’t follow diamond prices) the cost of a regular stone that came out of the ground.
