I would suggest getting a diamond drill bit. It always work 100%. I’ve used it on glass & ceramics.
I would get a old plastic bottle, fill it with water. Poke a hole on it. When you open the cap, it will provide you with streaming water to help cool down the bit.
I have a shit drill that you just use for hanging up pictures, so I find that using a template such as drilling into a wood piece and drill from that works best.
You can get diamond drill bits at any hardware store or even Amazon

For example
You want something like these then a cordless screw gun and a bucket of water. Tip of bit stays wet all times. Start cut at angle then square up the bit slowly until a ring is being cut and go slow and carefully. The diamonds and light gravity are plenty. Don't push. Careful as it is about to go through other side.
Practice on 2 or 3 glass bottles first. The bits last a long time if you dont push hard . They dull fast if you do or fail to use water to clear the createdbsilica dust and cool things.
I used this diamond hole saw kit from amazon to drill the hole. Trust me you need them to do it.. I tried a few normal bits and made some very unsafe holes in other bottles. Worth it!!

Pick your preferred diameter for your hole and fill the sink and bottle with water.
I used an old carbon fiber drone arm I had lying around as a guide for the drill. Without one it will jump around on you. You could use basically anything with a little thickness, wood, maybe metal, thick plastic. It works best if the guide is thin width wise, that way you can hold it down the length of the bottle and hold both the guide and the bottle with your free hand. Then line it up and use a diamond hole bit to drill through the glass, easy peasy!
I used another bit a smidge bigger than my old bong stem to drill through the cap and cork. I have some electrical tape around the stem of the bowl just to make an added seal.
So much better than plastic bottles and metal sockets.
I got something like these for drilling holes in the bottoms of ceramic pots. They work very well for the pots.

You CAN use a plastic pot, but to answer your question, you can absolutely drill holes. I bought a set of glass drillbits off Amazon and use those. You can even buy rubber plugs to fit the hole so you don't need a saucer. Just water in the sink with the plug out, let it drain for a few minutes, and put the plug back in and return to its spot on your shelf 😉.
