No, it isn’t historic. Archaeological digs have shown that the twelve tribes of Israel didn’t invade Palestine, they were always there. I’d like to refer you to “Did God Have a Wife” by William Dever. The books covers the archaeological findings, and places them in context with ancient texts, particularly the Talmud and the Ugaratic texts. He also places them in context with today. You can find the book on Amazon.
Holy cow, it’s on sale for $2.31 American! Did God Have a Wife by William Dever
Grammatical gender is not always related to literal gender in Hebrew or Greek. For example, hand is feminine (as are most/all paired body parts in Hebrew), but this says nothing about the femininity of hands or feet, etc. I would agree with Rabbi Kaplan.
There are other ways to determine whether YHWH had a consort, may I suggest William G. Dever, Did God Have a Wife?: Archaeology and Folk Religion in Ancient Israel (Eerdmans, 2008). Dever traces the archaeological evidence for the folk-religious idea of a consort, house shrines, etc. FWIW, when I search for the link I noticed it is a mere $3.99 for the Kindle version of this book).
