Yea, pinapple is highly active and prone to develop white kham yeast long term. One of the reasons I finally processed is that it kept building white kham yeast and I hot tired of scooping it out. It's totally safe, just looked yucky. One way to avoid this is ferment the pinapple separately. This is going to be my go to way going forward. Ferment pineapple for just a week or so.
Anyway, I got a pH tester at Amazon years ago. Looks like this.

I keep a spare on hand in case it fails, store it in a shot glass full of ph 7.0 cal solution I change from time to time. That way when it turns on I see if it is right at 7 with the reading, if not I can itvon the spot, if it acts funny I have a spare to replace it. You?
It’s cheap and mine came nearly dialed in, also comes with calibration packs. I would buy some more on amazon and calibrate every other week if possible
I consider it very important. It's almost guaranteed that your water isn't coming out at an ideal pH (tap around me runs at 7.4) and you won't know if your nutrients are changing your pH too much. Nutrients absorb best within a fairly small pH band, about 6.0-7.0 depending on what resource you look at.
You can get a reliable pH meter off Amazon for $13. I don't know if that fits in your budget, but I have this one and it tests well against the professional lab meter I use at work.
Naturally, you will also need a pH adjustment kit to raise and lower the pH as needed. That would run you another $15 on Amazon for this kit. If you can't swing that, you can adjust pH safely with oranges/limes (down) and baking soda (up). Just always make your water fresh and the pH should be stable with those shortcuts.

I've used this one thru my first grow. Haven't had a problem, seems pretty damn accurate so far against the ink tests I got from my PH adjusters.
