When I turned 24 (my most recent birthday) I received a book from someone my parents knew through church.
Some background: I was in a quite severe accident and I have plans to have my leg amputated when I feel ready. The process leading up to this point took a toll on my already diminishing faith and I am no longer religious.
They were invited to a small gathering we had to celebrate and they presented me with the gift.
I can only assume that my parents had spoken to them about my leg (as it is often a talking point in our family) but opening the presented after the party was a real shock.

I knew they probably didn’t know about the struggles I had with religion but wow. It felt fairly disrespectful at first glance but I’m sure there was no malice intended. Still, seems like an odd gift to get someone you barely know, right?
We lost the book when my parents moved (I left it at their house when I went home because I obviously wasn’t taking it with me) but back when we I visited at the old house, I would see that book and it would rile me up a bit. Haven’t about that for awhile.
