pretty sure it's a DJI Phantom. It's the same one that crashed onto the White House lawn a few weeks ago.
I would say if you're looking at first gen Phantoms go with the one without a camera like the one here. However, the first gen Phantoms only get about 10 min flight time with GoPro, gimbal, etc. attached so if you're looking for longer flight times (~20-30 min) then the Phantom 2 would be the way to go. Of course you'll have to pay a bit more for the newer model.
You can buy a UAV "drone" on Amazon for a little over $400..
I have one, and it's the funnest thing ever, some of the best money I've ever spent.
Mine has a small camera which streams live video to some Occulus-type first-person-view goggles, so you feel like you are flying in the damn thing.
The transmitter has a range of 1-2 miles. It's built for mounting a GoPro on it, which takes insanely cool video.
I own the 1 and love it, but the downside is the battery life. You get about 15-20 mins tops, but extra batteries are cheap ($25).
I actually emailed GoPro and told them to start making their own drones, it would be huge for them. The hobby is getting very popular.
One tip about drones is practice, practice, practice. Its very hard out of the box to fly safely and effectively, it takes time. And always go to a park or find some wide open land to fly. I would not recommend flying over people or property, or especially moving vehicles.
Some do have their own camera. But I will leave this here for ya :)
What do you mean music equipment - for recording ? for playback ?
With £600, you could get him the iPhone 6 plus.
A really cool present would be:

A first run DJI Phantom is EASY to learn, simple to fly.. holds a GoPro and just flat out works. Buy a few extra batteries.. you'll want them.
rcgroups.com the multicopter forum.. DJI Phantom has a huge thread there.
