If you’ve got a sedan, or just want to keep an eye on your dog closely, buy one of these.
It gives your dog a safe space in your car, and protects your backseat. My pup peed in ours one time when she was sick, and it didn’t soak through to the seat.
I got this one for my 2020 XSE and it worked out great. I especially like the front curved flap so the dog doesn't go flying into the front seats (mine liked to try and get on the armrest).
I've had quite a few customers come in with this style of rear cover (maybe even this exact one, I'm not sure) and they seem to work as described. Granted my perspective is a bit different, but I really like the ones that just have clasps that go around the front headrests so that they're easy to remove when I need to, say, access the back seat for a fuel pump recall. etc.
Ideally the kinds that have cutouts for the seat belts would be best. Not sure that there is a good solution if you need to keep a seat open for a human occupant (or child seat).

Get this one. Much cheaper and fits great in my Wife's Model Y and my Model S. Just an option. Works with out Lab, Pitt and Great Dane....
I would recommend getting a dog car seat cover! Here’s the one I use:

I bought this one off Amazon. There were versions with door protection as well but I don't need it. The main downside is the hammock material is a little slick so I keep a dog bed in there or a blanket for traction.

This is pretty similar to what I have. There’s a ton of different ones. I’ve driven without it a couple times since I got it because my would be in the shop and I forgot to transfer it or my wife would pick us up. Every time we drive without it, my dog is visibly less comfortable and we have to drive way more carefully.
Get one of those backseat covers on Amazon. Like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G642RMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_navT_g_V3SVQ1QHB63162V4QRNJ I just leave it permanently in my back seat. It has saved my leather seats from dog hair, dog nails, mud, spilled houseplant soil, milkshakes, exploded ketchup packets, and like 5 lbs of backed beans that sloshed out of their container into my backseat.

Other than that, if you are fortunate enough to be choosy about the next car you buy, look at pick up trucks (called Bakkies here in South Africa). I have one and it makes it so easy. Just chuck all your gear in the back and wash when you get home. Never have to worry again.

I have a German Shepard and have always use a backseat cover. It only takes me one minute to place and one minute to remove. Damage to your seat is one thing but the constant cleaning due to hair and dirt is another thing.

I use a rear seat hammock for my dog. Easy to install and take out. Keeps them from tumbling into the foot wells or over the center console too.

I got a backseat cover for car rides and it's a lifesaver for preventing all of the dog hair getting on my seats and floor. I couldn't go on a drive with my pup without having one.
Poor girl! So my puppy would get car sick and puke in the back of SUV or inside her kennel. However, she stopped getting car sick, once I put her in a car hammock — on my back seat. Try something like this: Dog Back Seat Cover Protector Waterproof Scratchproof Nonslip Hammock for Dogs Backseat Protection Against Dirt and Pet Fur Durable Pets Seat Covers for Cars & SUVs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G642RMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_UzrZFbB8AHGF5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Reminds me of this back seat cover for pets that I bought on Amazon. The product itself works great and I always have it set up in my car for my dog, but damn the photos are photoshopped terribly.

Just look at it.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G642RMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_J103QZQ8AH06PWZV17FS I had a similar issue as OP, getting this and being able to directly reward calmness in the vehicle has been a multi month journey and totally worth it.
For what? Animals? People?
If animals we use this one.
I bought this for my back seat, it’s been great, just folds up when I don’t use it.

I have a 22 Sonata and just bought This. It hooks over the front and rear head rests.
I got this pretty inexpensive one for my s5 cabriolet. Works just fine: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G642RMQ
You have the option to put it around the front headrests as well but I’ve never done that.

Same. Here's the link to what I bought
Don't let the dog into the front seat -- she'll be a distraction when driving and might try to climb into your lap.
If you can get a backseat dog hammock, I would recommend that. It'll protect the back seat from fur and reduce the chance of her falling into the footwells.
At least secure a something strong and flat across the back of the front seat so that she won't fly into the front seat if you stop suddenly. I used the puppy divider from my dog's crate.
Examples below - I haven't used either of these specific models myself.
https://www.amazon.com/Protector-Waterproof-Scratchproof-Protection-Pets/dp/B07G642RMQ/ I have something like this.
You can just add seat covers for ~$400+, or a back seat protector for ~$40.
On the current market, I probably have to pay full MSRP for a new car. If that's the case and if I can wait, I would wait and buy the one I want.
BTW, I have the XLE Premium and haven't open the moonroof once.
Oh in that case I have something like this I really like. Easy to chuck in and take out, plus keeps things from getting muddy everywhere

• 35% 3M window tint (front windows)
• 3D MAXpider floor mats
• Waterproof Backseat Cover Protector (I have a dog)
• Collapsable Trunk Organizer - Folds down to minimize space when not in use. Non-slip grip on the bottom (velcro) but also comes with hooks/straps. The bottom is also waterproof! Spilled iced coffee in there once and almost had a heart attack.
• 303 Protectant Spray - Keeps the dust away a little bit longer than just using a cleaning agent alone.
• These Microfiber Cleaning Cloths for the piano black trim

Tons on amazon. Friend loves them because it makes a "hammock" to cover the backsides of the front seats too.
