Also: I have something like this in my place too. https://www.amazon.com/Dr-Infrared-Heater-Portable-1500-Watt/dp/B002QZ11J6?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1&psc=1
Leave it plugged in & programmed all winter. Makes the place more comfortable for the munchkin & me. Also, uses less electricity than running my old, outdated baseboard heaters.
Not OP, but I have a Lasko tower heater and it's decent... but this thing is awesome.
I can specifically recommend this one which has served me well for years.
You will have to set your expectations thought, without air sealing and lots of uninsulated thermal masses your area will probably still feel cold even when heated. Drafts and cold walls/floors will still feel cold.
Pointing the heater directly at you or getting another heater to heat the area you are sitting, or a heated blanket, or some combination might make you more cozy
I believe the one in my room is an 800 watt infrared heater by ComfortZone. It's smaller and lighter than the 1500 watt model, and it's perfectly adequate for heating my room comfortably.
The most recent heater I bought, which got placed in the living room, is Dr Infrared Heater Portable Space Heater, 1500-Watt. Despite being 1500 watt, it is light and small like the one in my bedroom, probably because it is newer. It also has a low energy mode that uses 1000 watts.
I meant infrared like this: http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Infrared-Heater-Portable-1500-Watt/dp/B002QZ11J6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1424130581&sr=8-1&keywords=infrared+heater
Which uses a fan to blow the resulted heated air (convection). It's all about conversion of electric energy to heat and I think there is higher conversion in infrared than ceramic. So it's not such much dependent on a radiant path since you aren't worried about heating the air in the room, but the air in the box which is pushed out by a fan.
Current events notwithstanding, space heaters are pretty safe and OP needs to get one. Go for an infrared one. It's cool to the touch and turns off if tipped. For peace of mind test your smoke alarms. Turn on your oven, open the curtains during the day and close them at night, run appliances (clothes dryer, dishwasher if you have them) at night. Get a dog to sleep with. Put electric heat in the deal breaker list for the next place. Every bit helps and in this weather you need to pull out all the stops.
This is the one I use....little thing is vicious!!!

Thank you,
Unfortunately, the baseboards don't really heat above 65°F during the warmest of winter days in full sun. We are using this space heater only when occupying the living room during evening hours so it's not on 24x7.
It only trips the circuit when we try to use the microwave in the kitchen so I guess we just need to be mindful that it's not on when we're microwaving.
I'm not sure what's going on with the baseboards but I've heard horror stories from other residents occupying single bedroom apartments like ours where their electric bill was $600-$700.
The space heater we have is this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QZ11J6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
We hope it will save us some money by being more efficient.
It's this unit and plug https://imgur.com/a/FCSBcwI
It looks like A/C only. Currently, We have an infrared heater: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QZ11J6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
which is supposed to be more efficient than a regular blower type. It has a thermostat. We just can't use the microwave while this is running. Oh well.
One of the friends of our group got a DR Heater off of Amazon a few years back. It's a little infrared heater with a thermostat and a remote that is really good at heating up one room or creating this little heat bubble when your next to it. Four more peeps in our group have all gotten the same heater since then and we don't even use the window unit heater anymore. Here is the model we have...
I live in a studio and needed a heater that I could leave on while I'm at work for my birds. I have a gas furnace but it smells bad when I run it so I can only imagine how bad it would be for my birds. I got the linked space heater for my birds in addition to a safety plug. It's worked quite well. Depending on how insulated your garage is you might need two.

If you seal the garage door (hang up thick plastic sheeting over it and the window if you have any issues with air leaking), put their crates out there with lots of nesting blankets and buy some sort of space heater (think something like this, not a $20 fan heater that could burn them or start a fire) you could be ok. I would definitely not do it without a heater over night with Poms/Yorkies. If you can put up more money for it, and plan on this being a long term usable area (whether for the dogs or as a project space as well) I'd recommend something like this radiant heat set up.
