The Wilderness Dungeon Tile Set is a great product to use for improvising a battle location. You can pretty much throw the tiles down at random and it will make a good enough wilderness scene for a combat encounter. https://www.amazon.com/Dungeon-Tiles-Master-Set-Wilderness/dp/0786956127
They're called " Dungeon Master Dungeon tiles". They're cardboard and have things on either side. I actually really like them if you don't want to draw everything on a mat, or can't afford 3D stuff. It's the perfect balance and they can be mixed and matched to fit the scenario. If you pick up the "wilderness" and "city" sets you can make most settings no problem.
Here's the amazon link to the ones in the picture I believe: http://www.amazon.com/Dungeon-Tiles-Master-Set-Wilderness/dp/0786956127/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1456764230&sr=8-3&keywords=dungeon+tiles
I wish I could be more helpful for the early parts of RotRL, but the best printable maps I have used for RotRL starts at the Hook Mountain Massacre. http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2pjic?Hook-Mountain-Massacre-PrintableVT-Battlemaps
Some of the maps are official Pathfinder maps (I got the first map from Amazon back before the price spiked for some reason). You might be interested in getting some Dungeon Tiles - they made some very nice double sided cardboard stock tiles back for 4e D&D that I use when I have a simple dungeon or a simple fight for my players. The prices are still pretty reasonable on Amazon -just search for Dungeon Tile. Here's an example of what I mean: http://www.amazon.com/Dungeon-Tiles-Master-Set-Wilderness/dp/0786956127/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1440604277&sr=8-2&keywords=dungeon+tile
Here's an album of our maps and gameplay and whatnot. (Bonus cat picture at the end.)
I got a large pad of graph paper from Staples or Office Max. That and some charcoal/colored pencils, is how I make maps. We also have D&D game tiles, which are great for quick stuff.
Recently we bought a new tv with tax money. Thinking about hooking up the old tv to the laptop and using it as a digital map, but honestly, probably won't because I really enjoy hand drawing things out, as well as the ability to say, "Fuck it" and draw right over something, or trash it completely. Takes longer with a computer, not to mention, what happens if something happens to the file, computer, or tv. I'd rather just go with paper.
I keep a 3 subject spiral notebook for my campaign notes and two index card boxes. One for spells and one for monster stats, both are color coded.
We have a few Dungeon Tile Master Sets. These are from the Wilderness box.
