I'm with you buddy, I used to tease my friend for playing, calling him a nerd and a dork, and so on... but once I played I haven't missed a game in 10 years.
There is firstly Leagues, D&D adventure leagues, they are often hosted at conventions or in stores that sell the material, either of those locations regardless of the league should have ideas, information, or social media social groups for which you can find out.
there is also /r/LFG
you might want to grab Dungeons & Dragons Core Rulebook Gift Set
Its cheaper than buying the books individually, cheaper than buying 2 books.
There are also other games, /r/rpg is a place for things that are not just D&D, vampire games, robots, D&D in the future (shadowrun) war-hammer fantasy and 40k...battle tech, exalted, traveller.... many many games. Some might be more or less for you than others.
D&D is the most popular by far, games everywhere, its easier to find groups, get material, use digital resources all kinds of stuff.
you might want to get your own dice too, you can get plastic, metal, rare metal, rare stone dice, all kinds.
You can even play with your friends online, using online group meet -up's
I played D&D first on skype and IRC, There is a thing called D&D beyond but its a bit pricey for not giving physical copies of the material. Roll20 is another (but the owners are assholes) and some others people might know of. I also played starwars edge of empire on google hangouts for a year, it had a dice roller app, and we displayed our digital character sheets as out profile picture.
This is kind of the quintessential purchase for the "I did once and I want to do it again" crowd.
So, if you want to run games, you need the Core books that's better to buy (it gives you the dm screen too). But if you just want to play, while somebody else runs the game, you just need the PHB (there are extra books that add subclasses and races, but they are not really needed)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dungeons-Dragons-Rulebooks-Slipcase-Handbook/dp/0786966629/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=33QXWC35Z1UZ1&keywords=dnd+5e&qid=1640973068&sprefix=dnd+5e%2Caps%2C138&sr=8-3 Got em here via amazon, its the set of 3 for 78 quid with a binder and screen.
The starter set comes with what you received, no more. You need the Core Rulebook Gift Set if you want all three books at once. It's usually cheaper juts to buy them individually though because they are almost always on sale somewhere.
The gift set isn't out of print, so they might be the latest printing, but there is no guarantee, as it depends on how fast stock moves.
The foil finish is normal for the gift set, so it will look different to the regular books, which have a glossy finish. The foil look is much more subtle than say a magic the gathering card.
I would also suggest getting the books from the amazon.com site rather than the .com.au site, as they are the same prints, and it will be cheaper, especially if you have free shipping (~$120 AUD vs the $160 from the link you posted).
So I was on amazon looking to buy the base 3 books and came across this. This looks like a great deal especially since each book is about 60$ AUD so I am saving like 20$ and getting a dms screen
Now the issue I'm having is they apparently have a foil finish on the covers to give it a shinny look but I didn't think the books had this on it. Now I know that they have brought out new series of books with all the new erratas in them
So my question is
Are these the most up to date books and is the foil finish normal or are these like knock off books or something?
Super noob here. Grew up on DnD as a kid. Played a bit while I was at Penn State (2004-2007) went into the Marines life happened anyway. I'm 35 now and trying to get back into it.
I know Tasha's Cauldron of Everything was released but I got nothing. Can someone link me a solid buy from Amazon or wherever on the perfect starter set? I have no die or rulebooks but have played pretty much every DnD inspired game to date (Neverwinter, Baldur's Gate 1,2 and 3, Pillars of Eternity etc)
I thought this on Amazon seemed like a decent start?
There is a core set. It comes with a players hand book (PHB) Dungeon masters guide (DMG) and a monster manual. It's about $95 on Amazon.
Dungeons & Dragons Core Rulebooks Gift Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/0786966629/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_m3poCbCNV4Z1F
Well, make sure you have enough dice but that's a given.
Since you're running two people in a premade module, you're probably going to need to nerf the encounters a bit, as they're designed for 4 players.
The wotc dm screen is pretty nice, it has a bunch of lists and tables. If you don't already have a rulebook set, I'd recommend this one, it's at $90 right now and includes a dm screen, the player's handbook, monster manual, and dungeon master's guide. It's totally up to you if you want to get it, the basic rules will work fine.
If you don't want the books the dm screen is like $15 on Amazon.
Thanks for the input everyone. I ended up ordering this set. Looks nice and comes with a DM screen. I may end up getting online eventually as I plan on running the family campaign from my laptop.
amazon has great box sets, and they go on sale every so often too. in fact they seem to be on sale now for UK players, since your on now maybe you are UK TZ.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dungeons-Dragons-Rulebooks-Slipcase-Handbook/dp/0786966629
for me thats cheaper than 2 books at my brick and mortar store.
$82 set for DMG, MM, and PHB w/ DM Screen

Awesome advice, thank you.
In regards to which books to invest in, do you think I, as a "player-first, potential DM second," I should just stick with buying the Player's Handbook now? Especially since I would only be DMing new players almost exclusively for the near future?
Or should I buy the Rulebook Gift Set which is cheaper on Amazon right now for about $8 less than the 3 books separately?
This is a great deal which gives you everything you could possibly want to play and run a game!
If he already plays a lot then he may already have these and in that case I would search for supplemental books, cool dice, and miniatures to add to his game!
Replacing a DnD Fan's collection.
Hey everyone,
Kinda a weird request here. I am a manager of a team of Devs and one of my Devs lost his DnD Collection to a fire at his apartment (on the brighter side, he and his family are happy and healthy). He was a big fan of DnD and would always run one-shots for our team, because of this we wanted to surprise him with a gift to get him back on his feet.
I have been able to pool around $500 amongst my team to help him start up a new collection! I was just asking here what are some gifts/items/etc. that I should get him in order to help with the rebuild.
I am gonna split the gift into $250 DnD Related things. $250 Amazon Giftcard, for any other essentials during these times!
So far I got:
What are some other gifts that you think a DM/DnD Fanatic might love?
Appreciate any and all suggestions! Thanks!

You can probably find a group at your local comic and gaming shop.

Get the player handbook or the 3 core book bundle on Amazon. Alternatively if you wish you can simply get a copy of the srd for free, it has none of the lore, but all of the mechanics.
Here are the books listed on amazon. If you have any questions let me know. We can chat about it if you wish.

This is probably what you'll want.
Includes all 3 books you'll need and a DM screen with a small case for all of them for $90.

As you can see, the biggest expense here is mostly books. There are cheaper ways to obtain books, such as getting them second hand or borrowing them from a library.
I'll start with advantage/disadvantage on a d20 from Dungeons & Dragons 5e.

I have the special foil cover box set, put back, still in the plastic. I jokingly call it my kid's inheritance.

So he doesn't have any D&D stuff? Did he borrow everything before? Or did it have to get left behind in the move?
The most basic stuff to play are the core books: Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual. Here's a set on Amazon that comes with a nice box and DM's screen A set of dice is also important, which would contain a d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and a d20 at the least. Here's a bunch of choices on Amazon
The MSRP of full books is almost always $50. That makes this $20 for the case and DM screen. Previous DM screen kits have been in the $15-25 range, so $170 makes sense for their typical pricing.
The Core Rulebooks Gift Set a few years ago was the same $170 MSRP for 3 books (PHB, DMG, MM), a case, and a DM screen, but that same set is currently only $91 on Amazon, so you should expect similar discounts here.
I'll just copy my comment to someone else:
The regular gift set on Amazon
Links for pre-order:
Just as a heads up, B&N has it listed as 15% MSRP and offers free shipping. Hope this helps anyone unable to find a brick and mortar store that is accepting pre-orders.
I just bought it from Amazon for $88.
Amazon, for about $90 total. Though, I would specifically recommend the Gift Set which will give you the DM's Screen and a nice slipcase for only $10 more.
You can get the big 3 and DM screen from Amazon for $115 today. That's a pretty good price
I dunno. The D&D gift box I'm talking about is this one https://dnd.wizards.com/products/tabletop-games/rpg-products/dd-core-rules-gift-set
It has 3 books in it as opposed to Pathfinder's 3. It retails for $169.00 but Amazon has it for $117 Couldn't find the Retail price for the special edition one, but it's $200 on amazon and looks amazing. I'd love for Pathfinder to have something like it. (Other than the deluxe editions I mean)
I made a mistake though, it doesn't come with a battle mat or dice.
The 3 core books and a dm screen are $80 on amazon right now. That's ~27 a book.

Ah I gotcha! Thanks for the detailed explanation! I was thinking of seeing about this as it is 52% off on Amazon and includes the dmg, mm, and phb. What do you think of this? https://www.amazon.com/dp/0786966629/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_tNc5DbARGFSAK
Both. With my family who have never played before and with my 2 friends who have played before. I was looking at this https://www.amazon.com/dp/0786966629/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_tNc5DbARGFSAK but I wasn’t sure
For those that are interested: DND Core Books w/ Screen
They are also currently running a deal "three for the price of two" which has a bunch of DND modules and such included if you search "DND" or "Wizards of the Coast". Deal found here
