First step is of course to get your water tested. Making the assumption that your on a well? We recently bought a new home that is on a well and had high Iron levels (about 6 ppm). We put in an iSprings spin-down pre-filter, then to an large iron oxidation filter, we used this one (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P67Y8CS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_wC76FbTDB8NK6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) and then to the iSprings 3 stage filter. And its working great. Crystal clear water. For us, the 3 stage filter alone wasn't enough to deal with the iron. Also, our grain level wasn't enough to worry about a softener, but the manufacturer of the oxidation filter make a unit that has a water softener built in.
1) samples are drawn from the kitchen tap. I am in frigid upstate New York and so well heads are 4 ft down. 20 gallon pressure tank with 5 gallon drawdown is inside the house. 2) the Culligan guy was secretive about his tests but the other people used titration. Number of drops added to the liquid equals the grains per gallon 3) I shocked The well few days ago with 5 gallons of bleach. We are barely using the water because it's a house under construction. Not sure how much water went through the system
