> Also if he's going to go to the trouble of hauling a trailer couldn't he just bring a personal sized generator in case he ever did run out of juice in the middle of nowhere?
Personal sized generators are rated pretty low power wise. And are extremely inefficient. Below is a 8kW generator. They do not recommend you run it at full 8kW but let's just assume you do.
It would take 12.5 hours to charge a Tesla X with a 100kW battery from empty to full. or 25 hours if running at 50% load which is what they recommend. You would get about 16 MPG of gas into the genny.
> Even a gas generator with some fuel will not really benefit you considering how long it would take to charge the car with it.
I know it's silly, but I've wondered if you could get one of those flat cargo racks for your trailer hitch for a Model X, and put a generator on it. Then plug in the car and drive with a generator charging while driving. So, for example put one of these onto one of these.
I assume Tesla has the software configured to not let you drive if the charge cable is plugged in, but it would be another option for all the people hesitating on a Tesla because of range anxiety.
I'm looking at the charging calculator and it looks like it wouldn't keep you charged at highway speeds, but this isn't a practical solution to a real problem, it's a teddy bear for the anxious.
