Over 1000 hours with regular oil changes and never a problem. After the most recent hurricane my father bought the same thing.

Just because it's chinese doesn't mean it's bad. I have over 1000 hours on my cheap ass china generator and it's not given me a single problem.

I'm doing an install for my parents right now. It's a shed connected to the house. The house is block construction. I would not do it attached to the house if the house was wood construction because there's a risk of any generator blowing up and catching fire. If the house was wood, it could burn the house down as well. I'm installing it on a wall with no exterior windows or walls, and I'm still piping the exhaust away from the house.

I'm wiring it directly into their panel with 6-3 wire. It's a 10k durostar generator which has a 50a out and I'm going right into the panel with a 50a breaker. This method allows me to turn off the main, and turn on the generator, powering everything in the house. Yes, you can overload it this way, but you'll figure out your limits and if you go over, you just trip the breaker. Go outside and flip it back on, then don't do the thing you just did again.

To wire it into the panel you want an interlock kit, these are available from many sites, that is just an example. What it does is prevent you from switching the generator breaker on while your main breaker is on. This is extremely important. The moment you switch your generator on, if you leave your main on you're going to backfeed your entire block or more which will instantly trip it. But in the event that it doesn't, any electrician working on the problem may get shocked.

I highly recommend a licensed electrician do your electrical work. Electricity can and will kill you if you don't respect it. You're not talking about your 10a curling iron, your'e talking about your 100a-400a main breaker.
