This entire sub is not only a testimony but a daily reminder of the absolute failings of conservatism.
I could sit here & bend your ear with ten paragraphs of text that you will most likely ignore, but the truth of the matter is you will never accept any information from me as a source.
I'll instead recommend some reading material. If you want to know where we are today & how we got here then Economix- How our economy works. And doesn't work is the book for you. You may want to pay special attention to the chapter called "The revolt of the Rich" covering the years 1980-2001.
For US and World History I watched Crash Course on YouTube. Entertaining so doesn’t feel like studying.
For a little economy knowledge I read Economix by Michael Goodwin https://www.amazon.com/Economix-Economy-Works-Doesnt-Pictures/dp/0810988399
For management style refresher I just searched management styles online.
I answered questions on the FSOT app
I read the US Constitution for a refresher
It didn't really hit home for me until I read a great graphic novel called Economix, which I highly recommend everyone read - https://www.amazon.com/Economix-Economy-Works-Doesnt-Pictures/dp/0810988399 . And that's despite having studied a good amount of economics at a great school.
Finally got around to finishing his book: Economix
This should be mandatory reading in high school. It has erased many of my (now apparently) non-sensical ideals about economic solutions. I used to lean communist/socialist, but understand now that a fully controlled economy is unsustainable, whereas a mixed economy is always prosperous (so long as greed and corruption doesn't suck it dry).
I really liked Economix: How Our Economy Works (and Doesn't Work), in Words and Pictures
I also really like Capital in the Twenty-First Century by Thomas Piketty for a history of capitalism.
But for the most basic entry level overview possible I really like Debunked: Socialism has Never Worked.
Unfortunately not - this is my own insight to some degree , but I suggest the amazing comic called 'Economix', which explains how a mixed economy has become the best recipe. (https://www.amazon.com/Economix-Economy-Works-Doesnt-Pictures/dp/0810988399) It stands to reason: Governments (whether they are selfish or noble) want money, and the best generator of money is the free market (get the population making it themselves!), and the best way to get (some of) the money out of the hands of the capitalists is to tax this wealth. So any government with a bit of common sense will allow, and even encourage, the capitalists and entrepreneurs to create wealth, allowing them to siphon some off (for themselves or for social upliftment and 'common' purposes like education and infrastructure). The capitalists are also happy with this arrangement, since they can focus on wealth creation while the government can focus on uplifting people (and thus create more consumers and a stable society to operate in) in the process. Its a neat little racket, but everyone wins (except the earth which gets trashed)
I'm a fan of Freakonomics
I'm also partial to this book explaining fundamentals of economics:
