I'm not part of any groups, but I would strongly recommend this book by David Spahr. It is very relevant to the Ottawa area and will give you all the base knowledge to start looking around. Don't eat anything to start with! Use it as a guide and see if you can start identifying some of the main starter mushrooms like Laetiporus Sulphurus and Grifola Frondosa. I can't give away my best spots, but a good place to start looking is South March Highlands in Kanata from June - November. Learning your trees is also very useful. Good luck!
yeah, the best thing to do with oysters is tempura fry them! Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms of New England and Eastern Canada has 2 really great charts for cooking mushrooms; one where he correlates different species to types of wine for cooking and one where he ranks various methods of cooking for every mushroom (tempura fry ranks highly for most mushrooms).
Cool redbeard. Might see ya over there sometime. Stick to the washes with lots of duff and streamsides and you can still find some moist ones. I have had luck with the spaces between boulders and duff in those types of areas. If you are into it as a hobby a good book is David Spahr's guide.. We had his book prior to going on a foray with him this weekend and can confirm he knows the woods here well and is very thorough.
