Would this filter be a better choice or still need something stronger?
Can't do a bigger tank right this moment. Should we wait to start tank until we can or is it okay to go with the 60 gal we have for now since getting younger fish and upgrade as fish mature? Typically how long until they get to their mature size or at what size/timeline do we need to upgrade them by?
Thinking about buying a canister filter for my 20G tanks. I have aspirations for upgrading to a 55 gallon in some point in the future so I'd like to have something that could handle both. This Ehiem filter is for sale on Amazon for $79.99 and is rated for 66gallons. Wouldn't have any issues with over filtering? Or would the filter media just last forever?
definately get a new filter, what's working on the 20 won't support the 75 once you get more life in there.
Based on a recommendation here, i picked up an Eheim for my 40g. my HOB filter was rated above my tank size, but the canister just blows it away. immediate impact on water clarity.

What does your price range look like? I'd second the aquaclear 50 if you don't want to spend that much money. If you have the cash, get a cannister filter like this one http://www.amazon.com/EHEIM-Classic-External-Canister-Filter/dp/B0002AQXTA/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1427524285&sr=8-6&keywords=cannister+filter
If you already have an Aquaclear 20 I would either:
a) Get an Aquaclear 50 or 70, run both filters on the tank, and set the intakes at different heights by utilizing the tubing that comes with the filters.
b) Get a canister filter. They really are game-changing. They are more expensive but they offer an experience that is open to customization. Eheim canisters run nearly silent. That being said, there are tons of options and a lot of them are much more affordable (albeit usually a lot louder). Because you can set the intake and output on different sides of the tank it also eliminates concerns regarding water flow without creating too much current.
This is my 20 gallon tall. The females have no issues whatsoever with the current created by the canister filter and the bubbler that is buried in the back. Its extremely overgrown at the moment...trying to figure out how to tame the watersprite :).
It's a 29 gallon and I bought this eheim here.
