For the UK look for books by Brian Scaddan, Trevor Linsley or Chris Kitchener.
If you are a complete novice even something like the Collins or Readers Digest DIY books in charity shops for a quid or so will usually have basic wiring. They also illustrate house contruction and as an apprentice or learner most of your work at first will be making holes in things and filling in the holes afterwards.
