I bought this one a while back and I don't stream at all. It's amazingly useful. I use it to launch Fusion360, Cura, Prusaslicer (3d printing stuff), Filezilla, putty, VScode. I also have three buttons that paste the hex value for three colors I use a lot (I have a small ecommerce business) for websites and such. One button displays the current price of Bitcoin, one launches my downloads folder and one pastes my email address.
Amazon's base price seems to hover around $120 for it, it generally gets posted on this sub for around $90-100. Lowest it's been is when woot has it for anywhere between $65-80, although those usually have limited supply.
Yah I'm not quite sure if I understand it right, but from what I'm getting, you're better off with a streamdeck. This way you can put short cuts, and mute individual apps. If you use a mixer, I don't think you can just mute Spotify but have other audio still going. Whit this you can.

I gave up waiting and changed my rig instead. I picked up a Stream Deck and bound the abilities to the keys I wanted to (even lets me customize the icon on the key). I appreciate the option to save multiple layouts on the keypad. Pricey option ($128 USD). Worth it, IMO.
Elgato is a name brand, they make a very popular stream deck and various video capture cards. Pricing is probably a combination of good build quality and brand value (compared to no name Chinese products)

Ok maybe for a rev4. Or you could remove the long pins and solder it (almost) "flush" on the back. I imagine you use standoffs for the keyboard anyway so it shouldnt be a problem.
Or maybe a smaller version (15 keys) as a cheap alternative for the popular Streamer Makro Boards. I'm pretty sure you could sell that or even make a succsesful crowdfunding campaign if your into that.
Just some ideas. Anyway... keep on with your awesome project.

I am having troubles with my headset. I am using the Sony MDR-XB950BT Bluetooth headset and some generic logitech bluetooth USB dongle. I have the dongle plugged in on the front usb ports of my case so that it has a better signal I guess. While in games (Mostly Overwatch and CSGO) it sometimes cuts out, but the bluetooth is still connected. It has a built in mic so I make sure to disable it in recording devices and I make the headset the default device in playback devices. It stays connected to bluetooth but sometimes it just stops outputting audio. This only happens in games and even when it cuts out in game, if I go to a Youtube video it outputs audio. So is it the game? I didn't change any in game sound settings.
I'm seriously considering the Elgato Stream Deck. It's basically a small LCD screen with buttons, you can customise hotkeys with your programs, and assign different symbols to each button. Because it's digital, you can have multiple levels of buttons as well, as in you make a folder for Photoshop, and when you click on it, the buttons switch to a bunch of photoshop shortcuts you've preset.
The reviews seems decent, but it's a brand new product, so it's in it's infancy. I hope more companies will come out with something like this.

It isn't just for narcissists who film themselves playing games. ;P
It's originally used by some streamers (e.g. twitch.com) to control various mechanisms for streaming. (e.g. start/stop stream, mute audio, change camera/scene, do special effect, etc..).
A stream deck is essentially a way for you to add extra 'buttons' with icon/graphics. You can accomplish the same thing with just using custom keyboard hotkeys. But with a streamdeck, there is nothing to memorize as you can have visual buttons represent the things(they can even be animated). And you can have 'folders' or 'pages' in a stream deck so you have unlimited combination of custom actions.
I am not a streamer and I got one. I was excited about all the possibilities of it but ultimately found it just not that worth it for me personally. Though I've probably not spent adaquate time configuring/setting it up yet.

I would say base your decision on your circumstances. If you absolutely want to get something up and running right away, just go with some basic ext4 filesystems and use qcow2 images. That will be the fastest to get deployed and you will have less things to focus on. I have experimented with qcow images in the past and I have rebuild my entire system multiple times because I wanted to just "start fresh". To me, it is fun to keep trying new things and learning, and I can also understand that trying to learn too much at once can be exhausting. Not only that, but trying to implement too many new things at once is just asking for more problems. It is often best to take things in small steps. In regards to babysitting, though, once you have a clearer idea of your requirements for the setup, there should be little need to monitor anything.

Most workarounds aren't difficult, but it is true that some anti-cheat engines are more tedious to work around than others.

I've seen a lot of people here say they want a VM for things like MS Office, which is a bit surprising to me since most versions work really well in Wine, they have a web version that is OS agnostic, and there are plenty of other office suites available for non-Windows OSes.

Those or even a small keyboard could be passed to a VM that is handling streaming if you are using your mouse and keyboard in another to play games. That way there is no swapping input back and forth.

Caching on NVMe will generally speed up I/O heavy tasks. And since many tasks lock on write operations, having them write somewhere faster will allow the task to continue sooner, then the cache can be written permanently at its leisure.

No problem! I have fun talking about this stuff and its nice to see people who are actually interested rather than common "why doesn't this work? help me fix this" posts. Those can be fun too sometimes, but its a bit less exciting when the other party cares only about the end itself and not the means to that end. At that point it just feels like IT work, bleh! lol
Everyone applies their standard of "realistic" to fiction differently, so I can't comment on that, but I will tell you my HOSAS setup feels very immersive.
Dual Virpil Constellation Alpha grips (left and right)on the bases of your choice (I use warBRD to keep the profile down, if you're going to use extenders, get the MongoosT-50CM2). Then get Monstertech mounts to suit your needs (I use the desk mounts and they're bulletproof and easily removable).
(You might never see the grips/bases "in stock" on the virpil page. They take orders and fill them as soon as they can in the order they get them.)
I use a Blackhog b-explorer 02 for switches and buttons to control things that aren't bound to my sticks (doors, lights, landing gear, self destruct, ejection, scan/mining modes, access to remote turrets...). It comes with a mount that attaches directly to the Monstertech mounts. I had some issues with black-hog, when i ordered it a few years ago, but I've heard that they've started filling their orders in a timely fashion now, and the box is definitely well made.
I also have a throttle (original virpil mongoost-50)(not my picture) but I only use the buttons and switches, unless I'm mining, which is rare. Then I use the little flaps lever for amazing mining laser power control. That said, if they release a virpil panel with a similar small lever (doesn't seem to exist yet), I'll probably buy that and sell the throttle.
Finally, I have two Elgato (corsair) Stream Decks, which are just about the coolest little peripheral I've bought for my PC in general in ages. I do use them as cockpit controls in game, with profiles, subfolders, animated gif buttons, etc. But they're also neat like all the time. Desktop shortcuts, browser controls, media controls, and they're great for other games, like mmos that have a lot of controls and menus.

you can set up hotkeys to launch games, mute mics/sound through OBS, Change scenes. play SFX, toggle camera on and off for "eating" etc. as far as for spotify, there are "music" abilities but i havent used them, my keyboard does that. but i do have it keyed to launch spotify! let me know what you think!

I used to use the hat switch... Plain and simple... but I've found something better...
I now use a El Gato Stream Deck (NOT Steam Deck) ... It has an MSFS2020 plug in, which is amazing for customized functionality... You can make many different pages for different things... for instance, I have a VFR specific one page, a whole directory of pages for phases of airliner flying, and it was really designed for other things first, this is all secondary... I think it was well worth the 150 bucks...
If you do decide you want one, I would recommend at least the 15 button version... the 32 button one would be even better, but I don't think the 6 button one has enough function real estate to be useful... I'll leave a link below...

To add to the concept of macros and hotkeys for key phrases:
Addon keypads provide another method of issuing macroed communications without having to deal with keybinds on the main keyboard:
Elgato's Streamdecks (not cheap; 15, 32, and 6 key versions); and Koolertron's Mini Keypads (a bear to learn to program, but rockin' it once you have it dialed) are the two I use. Keybinds for actions and phrases are necessary for me (arthritis makes typing long phrases awkward when things move at the speed of WoW). The Elgato boards also allow custom icons for each key providing a quick visual of what each is for.
Take a look at bitfocus Companion and an Elgato StreamDeck for controlling QLab. You can control QLab via OSC commands and it has feedback on the StreamDeck from QLab.

Cool and clever! It's also $135 less than the StreamDeck, but I don't regret shelling out the money, because the streamdeck's software has some great integration with OBS and other apps.

It’s a little button pad that you can program to make do specific tasks while streaming.
Another option is a mini midi controller (used for sampling music, but can be programmed with software to function the same as a streamdeck)
