Nope. You don't have to use any particular style or type of abrasives to make great cabochons. Patience learning the technique and practice are what you need. So long as you have a backing plate, you can use the cheap metal flat laps as well as the factory standard diamond resin laps. You could also use PSA backed sanding discs directly on the backer plate if you don't mind occasionally cleaning the plate with rubbing alcohol to remove glue or torn discs.
I like cerium oxide on felt as a final polish for opals, gives you a real high gloss optical finish.
