I didn't need all the bells and whistles so I settled on the Emporia. I paid $399 at the time on Amazon. I had an electrician install a 60 amp breaker and then hard-wire the charger. I get a 48 amp charge. He said the 50 amp breaker could only get me 40 amps. I'm charging at 11.5kW. All this and a 24 ft. cord. Works better than I imagined. (Star, Ioninq 5 SEL, RWD)

I’ve done a lot of research on this in anticipation of my vehicle’s delivery.
The Emporia Level 2 UL-certified charger is the way to go, in my opinion. It supports both the 40A plug and 48A hardwired options (you must hardwire to get the full 11.5 KWh speed), plus it has WiFi built-in. So for now, take advantage of Chevy’s free outlet installation, and know you still have the hardware for a hardwired option in the future. Surprisingly, it’s one of the cheapest options at the moment ($449.00 MSRP).
Wow you are seriously incredibly gifted to be able to explain this in a simple way that a person seriously challenged in these topics (like myself) can understand! Thank you. I have a few following questions if you don’t mind.
Just curious, but why does the speed decrease so much when charging from 80-100%?
Is data shown in that graph you posted something that usually only comes out publicly after a cars are delivered and a consumer does the test? Or is it common practice that Cadillac (and other car brands) release this information before?
I do drive around ~40-50 miles a day. I’m considering a Level 2 charger like this one for whichever EV I get. Good idea? Also you mentioned outdoors, these would work fine in a garage too, yes?
Emporia EV Charger I got this one a few months back and really like it. Great value, high amperage, and the app is very informative.
The Tesla one is nice, but I think people should check out the Emporia one as well. It's always $399, does up to 48A like the Tesla, great reviews, good warranty, 24-ft cable, and comes ready for NEMA 14-50 or hardwire.

It has 48amp capability for less than the competition. The app is great also.
Get this for your EV6. I bought and installed. Charges at 9.6 kWh with no problem. If you get a 60 amp breaker installed, it can charge up to 11.4 kWh. https://www.amazon.com/Emporia-Charger-Electric-Hardwired-Charging/dp/B09BP1GM76/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=1PKN2NNGD4JP2&keywords=emporia+ev+charger+level+2&qid=1647670447&sprefix=emporia+%2Caps%2C92&sr=8-3
I'm using the supplied charing cable with the 14-50 plug. It's 40A / ~9kW, fast enough for my needs, albeit a bit short. If the supplied cable was only Level 1, I'd have gotten this one. This is relevant for US owners, other markets may vary.
I ended up with the Emporia Smart Level 2 EV https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09BP1GM76/
You can enter the ultility to get rates to get costs. They even have my special EV charge plan from my ulitiy though the price rate is dated (2 years old). Looks like they source it from some open source site so I'll request an update to that.
It's 300 cheaper than chargepoint home flex.
I just installed it, no issues with install.
The core reason I got the emporia and send the chargepoint home was (1) saved 300 dollars and (2) I saw no way to limit charge current in app for chargepoint when hardwired. I maxed out wiring for 48amp charging, but for day to day use I only want to charge at 32amp. I can adjust charge rate in the fly in the app.
My only complaint with it against the chargepoint is that the charge cable is pretty thick.
> but also a plug in hybrid sometime in the future.
I'm guna mostly with the other guy since the Tesla comes with a J1772 adapter, but any other car will not come with a Tesla adapter.
But I will also point out that the Tesla Wall Charger chargers Teslas more quickly because it can do up to 48 Amps, which is the max your Tesla will handle. It's certainly possible to do 48A with a J1772 as well, but you just need to be sure you buy one with that capability. Most 48A J1772 chargers are going to be more expensive than the $550 Tesla chargers for their wall charger. However, there are some, like this one, that are surprisingly cheap. The Tesla one comes with a 4-year warranty, but the one I linked also seems to have a 3-year warranty, so pretty similar.
I went with this one for $399. My electrician is coming soon to install it hardwired so I can't speak to the experience yet, but seems to check all the boxes on paper at least. I'm building a home currently and expecting my R1S Adventure Oct-Dec. I picked this 48amp up for $399 so the electrician can hardwire it now instead of paying for a separate trip after the house is done. No Rivian logo but functionality should be fine. https://www.amazon.com/Emporia-Charger-Electric-Hardwired-Charging/dp/B09BP1GM76
I have bought this charger, it has potential 48amp charge capacity, has an app that is honestly awesome, and costs 200$ less than yours
If you're looking for a cheap EVSE, I recommend OpenEVSE. You can get a kit for $300 and assemble it yourself and it has many premium features. I purchased this after buying 2 very expensive EVSEs that both broke after only about a year. These are 100% repairable.
You can also get the Emporia EVSE for $440.
I follow this guy and he now has 3 of the Emporia chargers https://youtube.com/c/WillProwse It cost $399 at Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Emporia-Charger-Electric-Hardwired-Charging/dp/B09BP1GM76/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?crid=O60WHDM2CFVO&keywords=emporia&qid=1650806664&sprefix=empo%2Caps%2C170&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&smid=A2MZON57HPVTEJ&spLa...
The app runs smoothly and you can enter your eletric rate to see how much in $ you have been charging. ive had it for 2 weeks now and I like the Emporia charger a lot and definitely recommend it.
I've seen other chargers with similar LED setups. That's a fairly average price for a J-1772 EVSE, so that thing's probably just fine.
I'd definitely check if your EV has its own scheduled charging system, though, because if not, you'l want an EVSE with the ability to do scheduled charging, so you only charge at night (assuming you use a time-of-use electricity plan), even if you plug in right when you get home. This one's significantly cheaper, and has WiFi and app-based control, which is surprisingly nice for a $400 EVSE.
If you want to stick to well-known brands, this JuiceBox is a good one. Lots of features, but also much pricer. ClipperCreek is another well-liked brand around here, though I believe this model is fairly dumb in terms of features.
Ultimately, EVSEs are extremely simple devices. A small circuit board and some wires, stuffed into a plastic box. I think you'd do just fine with that $400 I linked up above, as even that's a pretty high markup vs. the cost of building one of these. But everyone charges out the nose for these things, despite their low cost to manufacture. Tesla was actually known for being unusually affordable with their $500 Wall Connector, but that price point seems to have ceased to be the lowest available in recent years.
My MYLR charges 11.6kW using this charger:
https://www.amazon.com/Emporia-Charger-Electric-Hardwired-Charging/dp/B09BP1GM76/
Saves about $100 over price of Tesla branded Level 2 charger. May also save you significantly on installation based on rumors that electricians are charging additional $1000+ for installation of Tesla branded chargers.
Downside is you'll have to use an adapter (one came with my car) and you'll have to use the Tesla app to open the charge port at the start of the charge, then again to unlock the charger at the end of the charge.
My emporia 48 amp charger can do this. Probably the best value charger available. Under 500$ with tons of features
