If I understand correctly, the problem with a regular headset is that it blocks out external sounds so you would not be able to hear if your kids start doing something funny?
If that is the case, another option four you would be an open back headset. As the name says, the headphones have open backs, so you can still hear external sounds as if you were not wearing them. I got this one since I'm working from home during COVID and doing a lot of virtual conferencing (and it's weird talking with a regular headset that makes you not hear your own voice properly), and playing games with it came as a bonus:

Been using it for a couple of months, the sound is great, I can still perfectly hear what is going on around me, did not try the mic on Stadia, but no one at work was complaining about not being able to hear me during VC. The only downsides are that it is quite bulky, and a bit on the expensive side if you are solely getting it for a hobby. But you could probably find a less expensive model - my point is that open back headset could be an option for you.
The GSP 500 is 150 on amazon.
There is a GSP 600 as well, maybe that's the reason for the reduction.
We don't Horse around here.

I currently use the Sennheiser GSX1000 AMP/DAC with GSP 500. GSP 500 is an open back headphone. I would totally recommend this combo for fps gaming. I have a Sennheiser HD58X for all other uses. The GSP 500 headphone is very well tuned to work with the GSX 1000 and for sound staging as per my experience

The GSP 500 is a bit base-heavy for normal use. If you are used to it, you'll be fine. The GSX1000 can do up to 24bit/96KHz on 2.0HD mode(no surround mode). You can put it to 24bit/48KHz on windows to get surround support.
Note: You won't be able to run 24-bit audio if you do it as per Sennheiser's instruction to set up the GSX1000 for surround. As per Sennheiser, they want you to put it in 16-bit mode and turn it on on windows
Amazon has it for the same price.

GSP 500 is also a very very nice open back headset with an even better microphone. It’s bulky but is very good and is actually on sale for $180 instead of $230 on amazon right now.
