Erebus by Michael Palin is well worth a read.

It goes into a lot of detail about the build up to the voyage and what happened before it. This includes the previous Ross expedition with the two ships to the Antarctic where the names Ross Ice Shelf as well as two volcanos Mount Erebus and Mount Terror amongst others come from. They held the record for the most southerly point reached for nearly sixty years.
