For sake of conversation, I picked up these for putting the car high up:
Always felt more comfortable under them when the car was up high than the typical jack stand.
I still have two sets of the non-recalled Pittsburgh ones that I'll still use (with a backup safety solution) but I also ended up buying a set of these Esco ones instead of another HF option: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0019JVIPM/
Wanted the extra height and capacity to properly support my 4Runner when I need to. They are definitely beefy.

The rubber part they come with is great to use on the jack too, and don’t forget a couple jack adapters. I basically got everything from the kies jacking video lol
That’s been my routine for 8 years. Getting the car on all 4 stands sucks but it is stable once it’s there.
If you can get flat top stands they work much better on this car than U-channel stands.
I’ve got a set of 4 Esco stands. Keep an eye on Amazon, the price does come down sometimes. Worth the investment I think.

I've heard good things about these.

I'm in the same boat as airkewled67 though. I've used the same two sets of stands I bought from Autozone or whatever for more than a decade and they're still not showing any signs of fatigue or anything.
Sorry for your friend's loss. This happens more often than you think too.
On this same note I've never understood the $15 Harbor Freight jack stands either. They're only holding a car up, surely any cheap steel will do. /s
I had some mid-range 3-tons (don't remember the brand) until a few months ago when I picked up some of these. Much more stable than the U shaped saddle variety.
Block of wood under the jack.

For the stands -- a guy with a really expensive old Porsche 911 turned me on to these: https://www.amazon.com/ESCO-10498-Jack-Stand-Capacity/dp/B0019JVIPM/ref=pd_lpo_1?pd_rd_i=B0019JVIPM&psc=1
They've been excellent
Ahh. Sorry about that.

Do you need each stand to be 6 ton? Or by pair? What's the total weight?
I'm going with a set of these: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0019JVIPM/
But they're 3 ton per stand.
Not cheap, but of the several kinds I own, these are my favorite.

They look like Esco Jack stands. I've been wondering myself what the quality is like.
This depends on a few things. If you want the best money can buy, I'm impressed by the AC Hydraulics jacks. They're the perfect combination of low profile and high lift.

Other than that - it depends on your car. Make sure you get one that is short enough to fit under your car and that lifts as tall as you need. If you have a sports car, the standard jack may be too high to fit underneath.
Additionally, I strongly recommend the purchase of either a jack point adapter (very difficult to find) or, seriously, a regulation hockey puck if you EVER have to lift the car by the jack points instead of the frame or suspension. It will be so much easier on the jack points over time.
As far as brands go, I've mostly heard mediocre things about Craftsman. They'll work but you can't expect a lifetime of use - they eventually fail (though neither of mine have failed yet).
Don't forget jack stands! NEVER work underneath a car supported by a jack - always use jack stands. I'm happy with my craftsman jack stands. I personally believe that one shouldn't buy things your life depends on from Harbor Freight. For unibody cars, the ESCO flat top jack stands are awesome - traditional jack stands are mostly made for traditional frames and the flat top stands let you better support the car by jack points or flat areas of the unibody. http://www.amazon.com/ESCO-Jack-Stand-3-Ton-Capacity/dp/B0019JVIPM
