It's a cheap mechanical keyboard, but it works great for the cost. If you don't have a mechanical keyboard this is a great place to start. I have been using mine for about 6 months and it's awesome.

Sorry if this is off-topic, but have you taken a look at a mouse with buttons on the side such as the Logitech G600? I get a lot of use out of mine and can play PoE 1-handed at full effectiveness. It might particularly help with the flask issue.

The XM3 are the best wireless headphones on the planet in literally every aspect you are looking for besides gaming id say. But for the possible upcoming XM4, I am not sure what to say towards that. Obviously it’ll be better, but by how much and if that much is worth waiting another several months, especially till possibly AFTER your upcoming flights in August.

As for gaming, if it’s PC or console, get yourself a good HyperX headset since your budget is $450. I really have no idea how the XM3s handle gaming. But I own the XM3s and they are the absolute best you can get with wireless ANC headphones. If you are NEEDING a pair of amazing headphones, get the XN3s now. But if it absolutely isn’t necessary and you can wait; wait for the XM4.

I recently found a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro at Goodwill for like $9 and it played xwing v tie fighter great. You also get three "modes" for a total of 72 saved templates. I have one mode for normal use, one mode for grading/emails, and one for gaming.

I have one, and love it. As far as lateral/vertical thrusters are concerned, there is an analog stick for your left hand pointer finger on the throttle that works great. The stick itself has HALL Effect sensors (same sensors as the very pricey Warthog stick) and is very accurate. It's mostly plastic of course, but at that price point it's a given. The stick buttons (on the base) are kind of useless in VR, but since you aren't running E:D in VR it isn't an issue.

The only real downside is the throttle lubricant from the factory is pretty garbage. I spent a few minutes taking the base off of the bottom and putting some Nyogel 767a lubricant and it has been perfect since.

This set does go on sale somewhat frequently, but it doesn't often get lower than this price.

You bet! Also, it’s super expensive right now but the Thrustmaster T16000M FCS is a fantastic starting setup that is usually around $150 or less but it appears to be out of stock in places. Really solid stick that is higher quality than the starting units without getting crazy expensive. If you’re in the market, I’d highly recommend it.

I'm loving my Thrustmaster FCS HOTAS pack. (TWCS is the throttle, FCS is the combo) Default bindings for the throttle aren't there (since it's brand new) but the stick that comes with it is among the most popular (Thrustmaster T16000M). Another advantage of this, if you decide to go dual stick, you already have an ambidextrous one.

If you're on a budget, the Thrustmaster HOTAS X isn't half bad, but it is decidedly entry level.

You can use various buttons as modifiers (like shift or control on a keyboard) to get many different keybinds out of the different button combinations available. A quick search on the ED subreddit will give you many keybind options.

Other good HOTAS options that are a step up from that one are the Thrustmaster T16000M, the X52, and X52 Pro. I use an X52 pro and I love it.

Honestly i used to do stuff like this all the time. But it still felt way too busy for me. So i bought a mouse with 12 buttons on the side as i play a lot of mmos. It's honestly so nice i only use my keyboard for WASD, CTRL, ALT and Shift. Everything else is bound to my mouse. I could never go back now.

Just a tip for everyone. Try to keep similar abilities bound to the same button across all characters. Example: all my interrupts are bound to Q. Any health steroids are on R and quick healing spells are on E. It’s helps because then it becomes muscle memory rather than memorizing spells.

I highly recommend this joystick and throttle for ED. It's a more reasonable price (was actually $35 on Amazon when I got mine), and there are enough buttons to control everything with the right control scheme. I got my Rift a couple of weeks ago and ED is pretty much all I've been playing since then.

Yes, I used rubber dome for years, and a mech was my last end game upgrade.

Did it make me better no, but it did make me more consistent and get rid of the times I'd mess my counter step up and my first bullet would be inaccurate . Also I can easily work out on peeks widening a step at a time much more efficiently with tighter movement. Same with shoulder peeking to draw out awp shots.

If your wanting to try one pout you can get a brand called red dragon for 30-40 on amazon. Im using one, put some rubber o-ring under it and it feels great.

Ultrawings has a virtual flight stick (its only control scheme before it added HOTAS support).

It is capable, but it is simple, and it is still occasionally frustrating to use even though it is only a little more than the virtual stick.

My belief is that a virtual HOTAS is possible but that it would not be very pleasant.

Unlike steering wheels (I still want a wheel with modern force feedback for under $200, sigh), a good entry level HOTAS is affordable. The HOTAS X is $50 on Amazon.

Those who are accustomed to super high end sticks would object to it but I've found it a great entry point for Elite, and likely far superior to a (nonexistent) virtual HOTAS.

The buttons on the throttle are super easy to figure out, they're all pretty different in feel and shape.

The buttons on the joystick are another matter though. I havent figures out their feeling yet, they're all so similar

It's like gaming back in the 90s before light up keyboards, and voice chat, where if yoy want to smack talk someone in a death match game, in your poorly lit room you needed to memorize tbe keyboard and type fast between kills.

Yeah, I wish I had that one. I have this HOTAS X. There are a couple of other models with the identical setup for PS4 and Xbox One. They are all currently $75-120 on Amazon, so I'm just grateful for now that I'm only out $7.

You know, I actually bought this same exact keyboard about 2 months ago and I love it. It's the first mechanical keyboard that I've bought and although I didn't look closely enough at it on Amazon and I bought one without a number pad, I still don't regret it. I've been using this mouse for about two years too and their stuff, although cheap compared to other brands, actually seems alright.

What's your price limit for a joystick? This is the model I have, it's fairly cheap and it's been working great for me for over 5 years now.

If you're using Knossos then setting up an Xbox controller should just be a matter of linking it to your computer and then going to joystick settings and selecting the controller. If that doesn't work or you have other questions or problems then I recommend going over to the Discord, where the Freespace Open devs will be able to help.

Also check out VATSIM if your researching simulating realism in a simulator. There are lots of shortcomings vs real life, but it’s a network that try’s at least :)

Check out /r/eliteVR and /r/elitedangerous for guides. If you have never played I would recommend playing on a flat screen until you are comfortable with game mechanics. Flying is difficult and you'll want to learn before trying in VR. You can use a controller, which is preferable to kb/m in VR, but there aren't enough buttons so you'll have to bind some dual presses. If you enjoy the game enough, get yourself one of these throttle+stick, they used to be 50 bucks but they're scarce now thanks to ED and squadrons.

I got an email from Amazon and also checked New Egg. Not sure what's going on.

1.) take the money you are going to spend on that internal HDD and the external HDD and get you a "large as you can afford" internal SSD. I'd look at either a 1TB or (2) 500GB. Maybe something like this.

2.) Dont waste your money on that keyboard, if you are building a 'red' build, go to amazon and look at the 'red dragon' keyboards.

3.) also, stay away from off brands, IMO. It ain't worth the savings if you have to RMA the part. Mainly looking at the RAM you chose, but the SSD falls in that category also. read reviews. If there are only 2 reviews for something, I personally wouldn't trust it.

I purchased the T.1600M FCS from Amazon and absolutely love it. The throttle works great, you will need to tweak the settings to your preference but I would absolutely recommend it. No clue on the voice stuff since I don't do the virtual stuff. Except for typing/chatting all of it can be done on the two controls. I especially like the mini joystick to get off the pad quickly. I also bound the flapper in front to forward and back thrust when the landing gear is down....

The TM 16000 HOTAS - I use this for ED - Super awesome for the price. Most HOTAS are overpriced. This one is fantastic for the cost. TONS of buttons and neat features on the throttle you won't see anywhere else! I love the little throttle finger joystick, it makes for perfect lateral and vertical movements to mix with the joystick movements. The X52 will match the in-game model better, but honestly while in VR and doing stuff you're not going to be starring at your joystick and throttle in-game model...like at all. Best budget HOTAS imo.

Redragon Perdition. I picked this up for $35 last December, intending to use it for a couple of months. It has since seen a month of playtime in FFXIV, and plenty in other MMOs. I use it every single day and can't recommend it enough.

And it's 4.5 stars on Amazon with 2.5k reviews, which is petty crazy.

Just to be clear, the only HyperX wireless headphones are the Cloud Flight, nonetheless, as stated in Amazon by a HyperX agent, they just work wired with the Nintendo Switch.

I've tried a couple of different headsets and they all pinched my ears. The Hyper X is sooo soft, it covers my whole ear and is like a soft cushion around it. I'd recommend it a hundred times, also for its quality all around.

I don't think you'd be able to get anything custom in that price range. You could try lurking on eBay to see if any older models of a Corsair show up with brown switches that are cheap enough.

There are also a bunch of lower-end mechanical keyboards listed on Amazon that fit your requirements, like this. If you just search 'rgb mechanical keyboard' and sort by price, you'd see there are a decent amount of results. You probably won't get actually Cherry MX switches, and most of the listings seem to be blue or red equivalents, but those certainly beat your membrane keyboard!

Update: found this guy with brown switches! Now hopefully that ships to Canada...

Use this mouse. It's my go to and the buttons on the side are programmable, with a g-shift button that changes them to a different layout so the 12 buttons are really 24 buttons. It takes minimal movement, it would just be your thumb. If you end up getting it I can send you my UI layout that I use with it for XIV and my keybinds (they can be a bit finnicky if you don't get them just right)

Edit: it goes on sale very often! So if you don't like the price now, you may be able to get a better price in the near future.

If you want to keep your function row, grab a Keychron C1 (65$ sorry don't know how to find the price in Euros).

K552 is also an option, though there are cons to this. If you plan on it being your only keyboard without ideas of upgrading in the future, then I don't recommend unless you are on a tight budget. Still many ways to modify just more limitations.

I was gonna comment on that lol. First time I played an MMO, WoW back in 2012, was largely by clicking and rebinding hotkeys. After two weeks I bought a 12 button MMO mouse. Still using that same exact one and I can't imagine playing any of my MMOs without it.

Red Dragon stuff is fine. Using this one right now for 14 and it's been pretty great. Lightweight, sized perfectly for my smaller hands, not too ugly, software is easy, etc.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro + some keyboard controls for landing gear, lights, and other non-essential things will likely be sufficient IMO. $40 is pretty good price.

I've also used the T16000M HOTAS found it to be overkill for a not-VR setup.

You need HOTAS for VR, a simple joystick (or two) is good enough for playing the game on a normal screen.

If it's in your budget, I'd strongly recommend getting an MMO mouse like this one. It has a dozen -- literally a dozen! -- buttons along the side that you press with your mouse-hand thumb, which frees up your keyboard hand (somewhat) to focus on movement. In practice, you'll still need to bind the keyboard keys near the movement keys to cover all of your abilities, but you can assign those keys to abilities you use less frequently (meaning ones that have longer cooldowns), and assign your main rotational moves to the mouse buttons.

It's a little hard to get used to at first -- 12 buttons is a lot for one digit -- but after a few hours, if you're anything like me, you'll be wondering how you even played before.

Once you get pretty comfortable, I'd also recommend starting to look into using the modifier keys -- shift, ctrl, and alt (in case you weren't aware) -- through macros. Macros are their own separate (and large) subject, but setting up a few to use modifier keys isn't too difficult, and they'll essentially multiply the number of buttons/keys you have available for stuff.

Oh, and definitely rebind the keyboard-turning keys as others have suggested -- I actually forgot that was a thing, since it's basically the first thing I did.

This one is £40 new on Prime - first one I received died in a month and got returned, second one has been used almost daily for over 3 years going strong. Quite good quality for the price imo.

That's £230! For T16000M and a TWCS. There's normally a bit of an effective discount on the individual items associated with buying that bundle! :D

So frankly, if your budget is utterly maxed out at 250 CAD then I think the HOTAS X is your only choice. It's pretty dreadful and it'll probably break sooner or later unless you're very gentler with it (and even then it'll probably break) but if it's what you can afford then...

Obviously the wise thing is to save up and buy something that will last and will be good quality but you sound in kind of a rush. ;)

I've personally tried a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, a Cyborg 3D, and Thrustmaster T-Flight, and I prefer the Logitech primarily due to the ergonomics (though the quality also feels decent). For only $35 on Amazon, this is what I'd go with if you're just looking for a joystick without the HOTAS.

I use a HOTAS, but you can use a regular controller or KB+M

Highly recommend keeping an eye on this on Amazon if you want a HOTAS, it goes on sale quite often. Got mine for $30USD IIRC and saw it hit $20 once

I have a pair of Hyper X Cloud 1st gen headset I love. After watching Linus Tech Tips review of them I bought them. The 2nd Gen is currently on Amazon for $90 and I think the first gen which I have are a bit cheaper.

Removable mic, carrying bag, extension cord, splitter, USB adapter thing I think, extra ear pads, great box. Very worth the money IMHO.

I use them almost everyday for ateast 4 hours and they are by far the comfiest I've used personally. Never have sweaty ears, head never hurts, etc.

For mice, if he's the type that loves a lot of buttons on his mouse, I highly recommend this piece of beauty. I've had it for a couple years now and while it's off-brand (making it $30ish cheaper than comparable mice), it's held up great. It frequently goes on sale for $30.

If he's the type to set up his laptop on a desk when at home and he wants a dedicated keyboard for it, I'd recommend anything mechanical. I have this one and the price it is right now ($90) is fantastic (if not in your budget, that's fine too - there are other mechs for cheaper, usually without the custom lighting)

I don't have them (YET) but everybody seems to love the hyper x cloud 2 and Amazon had them for 65 dollars.

Yes, the HOTAS X is still a good unit. Though if you've got a bit more cash, the new Thrustmaster FCS would likely be much better and it's currently on sale on Amazon.

I concede on the KBM part. I agree, you can get stuff that will work fine for pretty cheap.

The T16000m by itself is around $40 on amazon normally. I can't speak highly enough about the Thrustmaster FCS... Amazon looks to be out of them actually...

The T16000M joystick is one of the best ones out there (and can't be beat at its price point), and it's ambidextrous, so if you want to try dual stick, your already halfway there.

The throttle feels rather nice, and you have easy access to more buttons than you'll know what to do with. There's a good rudder for horizontal strafing, and a little joystick on it that I use fit vertical strafing.

One advantage that I get from a HOTAS vs HOSAS is that it translates well to atmospheric flight games (play some of them as well), so no need for extra peripherals.

I often forget to change the pips from weapons when I don't have the enemy in front of me. I spend a lot of time spinning and looking for my target. All the while, I'm getting shot to bits. There's definitely a learning curve.

Highly recommend Kingston HyperX Cloud II. These are great at blocking out background (hard shell) and are so comfortable that I wear them all day without discomfort.

I use the Logitech G430s. They're $40 on Amazon at the time this comment was typed. I've had them for the past few months and they're great.

The 7.1 surround sound is awesome, and there's a pretty nice amount of bass. The ear cups are removable and washable, and the headband has a sort of memory foam as cushion. They feel good to wear for long periods of time and they don't make me sweat at all. It also comes with an above average mic. I can recommend them in a heartbeat.
