I use Etymotics and love them. Inexpensive, and pretty discreet. The other day I was at a small but loud show and with these in, I was able to tell a guitar was out of tune. With them out, all I heard was a wall of noise.
Etymotic ER20s. $20 on Amazon..
Have a pair, highly recommend.
You really asked for a link after he gave you the retailer’s name, the product manufacturer, the model number and the price?? REALLY?
Here: Etymotic High-Fidelity Earplugs, ER20XS Standard Fit, 1 pair, Polybag Packaging
Get these ear plugs. Should lower the volume down a tad and you can enjoy the movie without your ear drums bursting.
Yeah I have a similar pair that I will take when I’m going to a show or if I know i will be at a bar with loud music. My ears hurt too much with all of the sharp sounds at shows and my tinnitus has gotten worse as a result of years of metal/rock shows.
I love mine, the do a great job and I think the make the music sound better!
Get yourself a good pair of audiophile earplugs, you wont want to break the seal because they actually make most concerts sound better.
The Etymotic earplugs are tuned to let in a natural sounding frequency curve and will smooth out the harsh peaks that a lot of concert halls have.
If you're willing to accept permanent hearing damage just because you don't want to be teased then by all means go ahead, I would strongly advise against it but it's your choice at the end of the day. Who are the people who tease you? I was having way more fun at the show with hearing protection than the people without it, everyone around me was sitting still and recording with their phones like zombies. I could care less what those people think of me while I'm at a show for a band I love. On the topic of hearing loss, I listen to 1000+ hours of music per year and I'd like to keep doing so as I get older without having impaired hearing. Shows are very fun but the music quality is never as good as through a nice pair of speakers or headphones at safe listening volumes. Our ears aren't meant to hear things at concert volumes and there are tons of great hearing plugs made for concerts.
Check these out, or go to an audiologist and get molded ones made. I had molded ones made about 4 years ago and they’re still going strong, and I use them fairly often as a live sound engineer. I have 15dB reduction, but if you are always that close for shows I’d go for 20dB reduction. Live music, especially Radiohead, is awesome, but early onset hearing loss is not. Get plugs so you can enjoy Radiohead for a long time to come.
Edit: Great spot btw!!
Anything is better than nothing
I use these:
Etymotic High-Fidelity Earplugs, ER20XS Standard Fit, 1 pair, Polybag Packaging https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_bCQpCbQZFZP4Y
Inexpensive, effective. Comes with a small carrying case, multiple fittings, and a little neck cord
I'm baffled that I never see more than 2 or 3 other people wearing plugs at shows.
These are a good starter pair. If you have more coin to spare, I'd recommend getting custom fit.
https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Fidelity-Earplugs-ER20XS-Standard/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ - if you search around amazon for this brand, you can find additional sizes, I've linked to standard fit.
As always when this stuff comes up I like to plug Etymotic's cheap concert earplugs. They come with a carrying case to keep them on you so you don't have to plan when you'll need them, and they keep the music sounding good. And if you have them on you all the time for concerts then you also have them when it gets loud at work.
Not sure if even Amazon Prime is fast enough for this notice, but here's one option. Etymotic High-Fidelity Earplugs, ER20XS Standard Fit, 1 pair, Polybag Package
I swear up and down by these. I can stand next to the DJ's speakers and I will be completely fine. They even have a string to connect the two so you don't lose them.
These are the most recommended. I have them. They work. Sounds great
What everyone said about having a doctor (preferably an ear doctor, and maybe a neurologist.
Also what someone said about allergies. Or an ear infection.
But also, get some musician's ear plugs. I recently got these (no affiliate link), sold by the manufacturer on Amazon cheaper than on their own website, and I really like them.
I tried this. Went to an ear doctor and had a pair molded. Turns out they sucked. They would never create a complete seal.
Honestly, good, $18 ear plugs are just fine: https://smile.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW
If you're going to do this , 2 things.
Get a lumbar pillow , or do the shirt under the seat back cushion trick
Pick these up or something similar , you'll thank me later. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_umhaGb8G1XB7D
High fidelity earplugs are like these! They're a special type of earbud that tries to preserve sound quality while decreasing decibel exposure.
these have withstood holy fawn, narrow head, slow crush, etc. just fine for me.
[https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=asc_df_B00RM6Q9XW/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=241923266288&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10910936733280489335&hvpone=&hvptwo=&a... have withstood holy fawn, narrow head, slow crush, etc. just fine for me)
I tried eargasm, and I think they would be great, but they wouldn’t stay in my ear. They would slide out just enough to not be totally effective. So I use Etymotic. They work great.
https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW
Etymotic Research I need mine attached to a cord or I lose them ha.
Plus it's nice to just have them around your neck between set and on adventures to the bathroom
I am not the person to ask, as this is my first year, but from what I’ve seen other people say about that issue, you can try emailing their support line, but I think they have them available at the venue somewhere. That being said, someone else recommended me these. I literally just placed the order this morning and they’ll arrive tomorrow according to Amazon. Try that! Worst case it’s 20$
/u/smitttybb , There are lots of options, I use these:
https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/
They cut down the windnoise, but still let me hear some things around me, including music and Waze.
I've been to several thrash and death metal shows at a local indoor venue near me, seen some very cool bands like Sepultura, Destruction, Left to Die (Death tribute band with two original members), and Cavalera Conspiracy on their BeneathArise tour. I always have a great time, and at the Sepultura and Cavalera show, I saw a few children about the age of your son!
Everyone is always really chill there. I've gotten compliments and high fives on my shirts. The most rowdy place you can be is near the moshpit, as you can get shoved around sometimes, especially when the headliner is on. I imagine the moshpit at a Cannibal Corpse show is gonna be insane as eff, but as long as you stay away from it, you'll have a great time. Just make sure both of you wear good earplugs, especially your son. These are the earplugs I've used for every concert I've been to in the past two years and they work great. They lower the DB by quite a bit but retain a lot of clarity. It's worth the investment if you plan to go to a lot of shows.
personally, i use these. they're cheap, light weight, and incredibly effective of dampening without making everything sound muffled like big crappy foam ear plugs.
i know i've seen kids at ACL wear like these big over the ear headset looking things. makes me wonder if they offer them there at the fest because all the kids i saw wearing them seemed to be wearing the same exact thing. either way, i assume if you're looking to protect kids hearing you might want to look into something like that, which i'm guessing are more heavy duty than the ones i linked.
On every ticket service I've used they will email you a ticket with a QR code, and that is your ticket. One piece of advice, I always screenshot it in case I have bad service at the venue.
This kind of depends on the venue and who is performing. A standing room show for a relatively popular artist? You will probably want to get there not too long after doors open to get a good spot. I wouldn't be TOO pressed about getting there asap though, a LOT of people just show up when the main artist is about to go on in my experience. Of course if it is an assigned seating show it doesn't really matter, just get there before the openers start.
I would highly recommend getting a pair of concert ear plugs. It may sound ridiculous, but it's going to be LOUD and these are designed to not actually muffle your hearing at all. Take my advice, I have tinnitus and going to shows repeatedly without hearing protection WILL damage your hearing. Nothing in particular other than that, they should have water and stuff at most venues.
Etymotic Research ER20XS High-Fidelity Earplugs (Concerts, Musicians, Airplanes, Motorcycles, Sensitivity and Universal Hearing Protection) - Standard Fit, Clear Stem, Clear/Frost https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_2K87H6E1152YFA4VQR9C?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
These are the ones I used a few weeks ago to see wage war and they were great.
Etymotics makes some fantastic earplugs that are barely noticeable, allow you to hear normal sounds and speech well enough, yet subdue most noise. I really love them. Super affordable as well.
I have an earplug suggestion! These are specifically made for blocking out noise levels while still allowing the music to be clearly heard. I’m a former concert junkie and they were a complete life (ear) saver
I can confirm. They are SUPER helpful. It's an absolute night and day difference in hearing and such afterwards, and it doesn't ruin the performance at all. Infact, a lot of times I feel like it's better because the bass isn't SO forward.
Cheap AF and last a lifetime.
These are the ones you want. Etymotic ER20XS. Etymotic has been around forever, they're 20 decibel reduction and the "XS" ones are lower profile ones that don't stick out of your ear as much as the regular ER20's.
https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW
These are solid beyond solid (and cheap enough that I don't freak out when I lose them). Takes the volume from like a 9 to a 6 without sounding super muffled like cheap foam ones.
They have bigger ones if you don't like the super tiny look but looks like not prime shipping at the moment.
Yeah do this. The ones below have been great for me.
Etymotic Research ER20XS High-Fidelity Earplugs (Concerts, Musicians, Airplanes, Motorcycles, Sensitivity and Universal Hearing Protection) - Standard Fit, Clear Stem, Clear/Frost https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_6CZPC86YQ8VZ84HCTQ2C?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
do you have a link to the ones you got? were they these ones? i've just been using standard foam ones as i tried eargasm and another one and they didn't fit right and/or muffled the sound way too much so the foam ones were fine but still on the hunt trying to find a good reusable pair that doesn't destroy the experience.
I like etymotics er20xs. They're 15$, very comfortable, forget I even have them in. May not work as well as an expensive custom pair but they work well and they're cheap enough losing them isn't the end of the world (losing them at home I mean, they haven't ever fallen out on me)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_YX13R39E2D8T1JWFSC44
I used these and could not recommend them enough
I got these and had them ready for a Megadeth and Lamb of God concert (only ended up wearing them for Lamb of God). They worked great and never got very uncomfortable after about 30-40 minutes. They also come with a hard plastic case.
I highly recommend these earplugs. I wore them for the first time when I saw Tool a couple weeks ago and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I could hear everything clearly and have conversations with my friend next to me no problem. They just cut all of the harsh and painful noise. This brand Etymotic specializes in high fidelity audio equipment so they know what they're doing.
I've been using these for years at loud concerts: Etymotic Research ER20 High-Fidelity Earplugs-$13 It is almost identical to the Eargasm ones and cost less. Hope this helps,
I wore these to the Tulsa show, it was the first time I’ve used them and they were perfect. No loss in sound quality at all, I could hear everything clearly. It was just like a switch that turned all the harsh and painful noises off. Could not recommend them enough.
They work by reducing the decibels of things. You can get them in different filter levels but the usual ones are 20.
That means they reduce all the sounds you hear by 20 decibels. The really loud stuff you hear from the speakers is reduced to a safe level but it's still loud and what you hear the most. It also reduces all the other "background noise" you hear like the crowd chatter and sounds echoing around. A lot of that noise basically gets filtered out or reduced dramatically. What you're left with is hearing the loud sounds like the speakers and the audio sounds a lot more like you turned it to high definition after filtering out all that background noise.
They make conversations with people close to you easier without shouting at each other. They're loud enough to get past the filters and their voice sounds a lot more clear.
Any of the newer brands work the same but I recommend the Etymotic ER20XS. Etymotic are the industry standard and have been around for forever. These are the ER20"XS" because they have a lower profile exterior than the research ones they sell that stick out further. They're the ones you want for concerts. If you find those make things too quite you can find 15db plugs
Some people have already mentioned this, but bring earplugs. I would highly suggest investing in a decent pair of earplugs as well. The standard orange or pink foam ones are really terrible. They’re great at blocking out noise, but they cover up the high end so all you’ll really hear is the bass. I’ve had these ones for years and they still hold up great. They all sound fantastic (you can actually hear the guitars and vocals clearly). Only $15, and you can wear them to every concert you go to instead of getting a new pair of foam ones each time. They’re also smaller, transparent, and way more discreet. If you’re self conscious about people seeing you wear earplugs, people won’t notice you’re even wearing them, especially if it’s dark out.
I can’t stress this enough: protect your ears. Once you damage your hearing, it’s gone forever. I don’t want to be too much of a downer though, Green Day shows are a fucking blast. I’m sure you’ll have a great time!
I've used these Etymonics for several years now with no issues: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RM6Q9XW
Customs are nice, but I would be too worried about losing them at the fest. I've only lost my earplugs twice in ~10 years going but even so these are cheap enough to not have to worry about losing a pair.

I think the following have low D: Lee Oskar, Manji, and Rocket. There's also the Hohner Thunderbird, which has always seemed stupid expensive to me.
Consider getting some musician's earplugs. I have these.
WEAR👏EAR👏 PLUGS👏. Save yourself and you're hearing. Cheap, disposable foam ones will do fine but I always reccommend these if you are looking for a more permanent pair.
Recently there was a very interesting thread here on the topic of using noise-cancelling earbuds as hearing protection, where someone who'd worked on noise-cancelling earbuds showed up. What they pointed out is that for high-frequency and non-repetitive sounds, current anc systems do not actually cancel or absorb the noise, but rather add noise to make the incoming noise less intelligible. Although this can make what you're hearing through the earbuds more intelligible, it means that you shouldn't use anc for hearing protection: it can make it hard to judge how much noise you're actually being exposed to, and add to the noise that gets through the earbuds.
If you're just going to use them as earplugs with everything turned off, that's a different matter. You could also try some musician's earplugs, which are designed to reduce volume levels evenly across the frequency spectrum (that's just one brand, there are lots more).
Sorry to hear that.
I bought a few pairs of these Ear plugs from etymotic they are relatively cheap and work really well. I wear them to concerts and sporting events
You probably won't need them. Typically, I've only felt like I needed earplugs when I've been weekend after weekend at clubs, concerts, and loud places.
Unless you're right at the front, you won't need em.
There's are some for sleeping and some for music events so they don't muffle the sound too much. Make sure you get the right ones.
I paid $15-20 for mine and they work great. https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW
if you have sensitive ears like me, try musician's earplugs. They're not that expensive, and they reduce the intensity of the entire audio spectrum equally, so that sound isn't muffled like with solid earplugs.
you might just be like me, I have pretty sensitive ears, so in a lot of imax theaters and things like that it's uncomfortably loud for me.
what you could try is getting a pair of musician's earplugs. They're not that expensive, and they reduce the intensity of the entire audio spectrum equally, so that sound isn't muffled like with solid earplugs.
Etymotic Research
I have tried most, including eargasm, and these were the best (and cheapest if i recall correctly)
Etymotic Research ER20XS High-Fidelity Earplugs (Concerts, Musicians, Airplanes, Motorcycles, Sensitivity and Universal Hearing Protection) - Standard, Clear Stem https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_BY4K82NJNET0X3VW1F9F
I don't have an F900XR, but I do have the Akra slip-on on my R1250GS. IMO, it added just the right amount of additional volume, and made the exhaust much deeper sounding. I always ride with ear plugs, so the additional volume wasn't too much of a concern. It's not nearly loud enough to bother my neighbors.
I'd recommend heading to a BMW Motorrad dealer and seeing if they have an Akra equipped bike in the showroom. It's a long shot, but worth calling around. The F900 engine is very similar to the F850, so even if you find an F850 with the Akra, it'd be worth a listen to see if you like it.
If you're not a fan of ear plugs, check out the Etymotic Research ER20XS ear plugs I've got. The company started by making ear plugs for sound technicians, who need to be able to hear the concert accurately, but are at significant risk of hearing damage from the loud volume of the typical concert. They cut out all the harsh noise of the wind and motorcycle, but still let through the sound of the exhaust. I actually prefer the sound of my motorcycle with these plugs in versus out. It's a great incentive to wear them and protect my hearing :)
Either direct or Amazon. They have maybe two or three lines for varying noise isolation but they're a hearing health company that makes fantastic iems but made a name in the hearing industry first. 20db lower with these
I got a pair from Etymotic for $15 that are fantastic. I swear they make my bike sound better. They cut out the harshness, but still let you hear the lovely thrum of the motor.
Etymotic Research ER20XS High-Fidelity Earplugs (Concerts, Musicians, Airplanes, Motorcycles, Sensitivity and Universal Hearing Protection) - Standard, Clear Stem https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/
I keep these in their little container on my keychain at all times - hasn't come in handy in the last year or so, but before the pandemic I can't tell you how often I would go for a spontaneous concert, a club night, or just an extra loud subway ride and just pop them in.
SOMEONE MAKE THE NOISES STOP
Jokes aside, I have a constant high pitched ringing in both ears. Sometimes my hearing will go out in one ear temporarily, and an audible ring will be all that I can hear for the next 30 sec.
My professor always taught us to protect our hearing with ear buds, especially as we get older or sit in front of brass in the pit lol. She's got the $400 customized prescription kind that let sound through, but these $20 will do the job for my poor man's wallet.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I use these at concerts, practice and for playing in a live show setting when IEMs are not an option.
I honestly don’t know the precise ranges, but just anecdotally, these are what I use and I’ve never gotten tinnitus after shooting, which as I understand it, is the point at which you’ve damaged your hearing. I originally bought them to mix live music and again just anecdotally, I hurt my hearing a lot more doing that than shooting. A 115 or 124 grain 9mm round really isn’t that loud and even foam earplugs can handle it fine as long as you have a good seal. Your plugs plus muffs are probably going to be overkill. Your only concern should be that you might annoy your friend cause he’ll be talking to you and you won’t be able to hear a thing.
This is a good post to ask - i have Etymotic earplugs (https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW this ones to be exact) and i'm taking them to my first concert in like a month. Nothing too loud, just an indie band. So i'm asking - does anybody have experience with these? Are they good and don't muffle the sound too much? Thanks!
mine are only $20 and you can hear people just fine. it filters out the higher ranges. https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=Etymotic&qid=1564761420&s=gateway&sr=8-3
Or you could take up kick boxing in the office and tell people its how you feel the rhythm.
Here are my 2 cents... phone is a decent way to get a reading below 90dB. What exactly are you doing that you're concerned about? The easiest thing to do is just to get flat response ear plugs - it's just going to turn down the volume on everything, but you'll still hear like normal. I wear these to all of the shows I go to that are hitting in the 90s and above: https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/
Use your phone to get a general baseline, but I get erring on the side of caution. Figure out about what sounds like it's not good for you, pop in your ear plugs, don't stress it.
I bought these last year and they've served me well. I don't have experience with any other ear plugs but one bit of criticism I have about the etymotic is almost how well they work in that they almost completely reduce the sound volume of melodies while I'm in the front row. So when I'm not a cheapskate I'd like to try a few other brands and see how they hold out but overall it's night and day difference. Once these are in and you get used to the feeling of them being inside your ear you forget theyre in. Little difficult having conversations with people but it's still possible. Cheers!
Get musicians earplugs if you want to hear the concert clearly.
They don't block quite as much sound as traditional earplugs, but they maintain a flat response so that you can clearly hear the music, while bringing the volume down to an enjoyable level.
I personally use the Etymotic ER20XS, but there are ones that block more sound or are cheaper if you want. I've also heard good things about the Alpine Hearing Protection MusicSafe Pro and the Access Earplugs Noizezz lines.
hey, not sure if you already picked up a pair of earplugs yet, but these ones are great. They don't block out the sound completely, but just lower the overall volume to a tolerable level. You can still hold a conversation with them.
I have this brand which I like because it comes with a string you can tie around your neck so you can easily pull them in and out.
I also bring foam earplugs if it's a camping festival because people will party all day and all night.
That depends on the room. A shitty concrete box, probably 30 minutes minimum. A nice, well treated room, probably 10 minutes to get passable.
I'm using a DBX Driverack PA2 for crossovers and room eq with the RTA mic. Then playing some reference tracks to determine what needs to be fixed in the auto-correction. There's a significant amount of finessing needed to get it to work well, but once you learn it's quirks it really works well.
I can't stress the finesse bit enough though, if you just throw the rta mic in a room and press go you're in for a bad time. You have to use your ears. Bring ear protection (I use these) and wear it during setup and while it's shooting the room. You want to stay as fresh as possible so you can have a shot at hearing what the PA2 (or equivalent) did wrong.
I used to go to lots of death metal\metal concerts in Montreal and upstate NY. The music was always way too loud and I should have used better hearing protection. These days, I use something like these, of course there are others to try also: https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Fidelity-Earplugs-ER20XS-Standard/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1489592714&sr=8-1&keywords=etymotics+ear+plugs
If you're going to buy ER20's at least get the ones that don't make you look goofy.
I the first result on Amazon. Forgot to turned off expedited shipping so it comes down to 36 NZD delivered. I feel like 20db reduction would be right for a concert. I wear 24db plugs at work and they do the job at blocking most noise out.
You might also want to look into etymotic ear plugs.. They offer about 20 dB of equal reduction across the spectrum. It feels just like you've turned down the volume. I don't go to concerts without them.
Reusable and once you get used to wearing them (a song or two) everything sounds great.
I believe someone recently had a post about earplugs, and someone on the thread mentioned "musician earplugs" or "high fidelity earplugs," so I bought myself a cheap pair. They're amazing! Super comfortable, and I love that I can still hear with them in! They reduce the sound by up to 20dBs, and block any damaging sounds. Highly recommended!
Late to this post. 22y/o DJ. I use these and they are excellent. Bought them after my ears rang from a bedroom DJ sesh.
I bought these, they work great! Seriosuly, ear plugs not only protect your hearing, but allow you to actually hear the muic better. They cut out that indecipherable noise you hear at concerts and make it way easier to clearly hear the individual instruments and vocals. I have never had a problem with these earplugs falling out in the pit, although I had a pair in the past that stuck out of my ear much further and I did lose one of those.
They kind of do, maybe half an inch, but I've never had anyone hit them. Someone is going to have to go past your shoulders to hit them. When I used to get into the pit, I took them out.
There are newer versions that don't stick out as far, for maybe $10 more.
If you want earplugs, I highly recommend these. They are designed by a company that does a lot of professional IEM work. They just roll off the top decibels so it can actually improve the sound of the show, no muffling. http://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Research-ER20XS-SMF-P-High-Fidelity-Earplugs/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/
I used these on Jam Cruise a couple of weeks ago and had no complaints. They sound great and are pretty comfortable. I lost them on the last night though, that sucked.
I have an ear appointment scheduled and will be getting a ear test and custom molded etymotic plugs for ~$175. I can't wait to goto shows with them
I use these Etymotics for gigs every week. I love 'em.
This is their newer design.. I always used the plugs with the longer stem before (also Etymotic). they're both great.. these just knock an extra 5db off the top
I cannot state this enough. I know earplugs "dull" the sound and everything isn't as clear, but going without hearing protection is not worth it. If you love listening to Phish (or anything) you owe it to yourself to make sure you'll be able to hear it in the future.
I've played in bands and symphonies and own a pair of musician's earplugs that are molded to my ear; they cost me ~$200 and they have been worth every single penny and then some. If you play music loudly and often, look into getting a pair. They don't dull the sound like normal foam earplugs, and with the high quality ones the hearing difference is very minimal. It blocks out all the bad stuff and lets you hear all the good stuff.
If you're not in an environment with loud music every day, but you go out to shows fairly often, buy yourself a pair of these (same product here but on Amazon). Similar idea to the earplugs above, but cheaper (and not custom fitted), these guys are fantastic quality for very little cost. A single ~$20 investment for a pair of earplugs you can use at every event from now until the end of time.
And if the above is for some reason too much for you, just shut up and buy a bottle of these. Foam earplugs dull the quality but they're better than being deaf.
Seriously folks, if you want to listen to that new heady Tweezer in 10 years time, get hearing protection, stat.
everyone, do yourself a major favor. these have changed the mf game for me. no muffle, just decibel reduction

Might want to get him a set of nice noise isolating headphones that fit kids. Definitely get a set of good earplugs similar to these: https://smile.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=etymotic&qid=1605907745&sr=8-6&th=1
I've been using these for 5 years without complaints. I dont have much to compare them to, but they're definitely more enjoyable to wear than the foam plugs.
Decent for a first pair to try - https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW
Earplugs! Not the big foam ones, but subtle earplugs for music/concerts. Enough to protect your hearing and take the edge off while still being able to hear everything clearly.
I highly recommend either of these $14 options from Etymotic Research!
Compliment women, when they get a haircut. As a woman, you probably already know this but it's worth repeating for my fellow men. (Thanks, Mom!)
Call yourself a woman, not a girl. Similarly, your male friends are men, not boys.
Do you have health insurance? If so, do you have a primary care physician? There's a good chance that insurance covered PCPs won't see you for an illness, if you're not an established patient and there can be a wait time to become a patient, because the initial physical/history takes longer than a regular and so has to be specially scheduled. In effect, PCPs are one of those things you NEED, before you need. If you don't have one, call your insurance for a list of who's in network.
If you were a music major, you hopefully already know this but noise induced hearing loss and tinnitus can sneak up on you and severe cases are debilitating. Wear these to concerts/movies (musicians almost never wear them onstage... and virtually all of us have non-negligible NIHL :/) and don't use earbuds/headphones (Without ambient sound as reference, it's easy to turn up the music too high... if you're not actually trying to drown out ambient sound. Also, earbud use has been linked, I'm told, to significant increases in bacteria in the ear, though I don't know if that's harmful.).
English Cadbury chocolate costs the same as American Cadbury chocolate on Amazon and is way better.
You mean I shouldn't eat Ramen everyday?
these work great without messing the sound up too much
I used these Etymotic earplugs this last edc and they worked great!
They recommended these! Shipping to my country was too expensive, so I searched for something similar on local music shops
Hey there! Guy with CP who's been a semi-professional musician, attending concerts since I was 13 (my concert list is up to 147 shows) and mostly attending shows in my chair since 2007-ish, so I'll pass along the advice I have. Some of these are more generalized disability advice and not wheelchair specific.
Oh! We got these on Amazon, Etymotic Research ER20XS... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I've worn reusable earplugs at shows and fests for years now, and I can't imagine going to one without them.
I use these ones. Only $20, and everything still sounds perfect, just at a safer volume.
I've used these at hundreds of shows and fests and have zero complaints. And they're only $20.
Wear Etymotic Filters buy them now.
https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=pd\_lpo\_3?pd\_rd\_i=B00RM6Q9XW&psc=1
these are they pair i use :) they might not be top shelf but definitely get the job done without muffling the sound!
these are the ones i use :)
I posted an answer a while ago for someone who was asking about tinnitus after microsuction and so far the answers here seem like good ones. I just wanted to add my two cents to the hat.
I saw you said you were going to a concert soon and were thinking about earplugs in another comment. Hearing protection will definitely make a big difference in feeling like you're keeping your hearing safe - especially if this recent event with microsuction is concerning. And not only will it feel like you're making a difference - you will be!
My recommendation is usually Etymotic ER-20s because they're cheap, easy to insert, hide well, and keep music sounding balanced. That said, don't be too worried about them being discrete! It's pretty cool, in my opinion, to take care of your hearing and yourself but still want to experience a good time enjoying yourself with live music!
I got these Etymotic ear plugs and love them $18

I tried countless ear plugs and I swear by the Etymotic Research High-Fidelity Earplugs: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RM6Q9XW
Most earplugs block too much sound. This one is perfect.
Seriously, it's like just turning the volume down a bit.
I personally like Etymotic earplugs. They have a long history of making earbuds, are more affordable, and have a better sound range than eargasms.
https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW
<$20 and worked great for me! get the universal sizing to get multiple different sized tips
Oh oh and if you want to get fancy, they sell proper musician earplugs that try to dampen all frequencies more evenly. I use those in live concerts :)
I have these https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/
Earplugs! Spend the $20-40 for a decent pair of reusable ones, not the disposable foam ones. They don't muffle the sound like the foam ones. Just make everything a little more quiet and safer so you can enjoy years of shows and fests.
I recommend either the Etymotic Research ER20XS or EARasers
Think so, they seem to have earplugs based on their triple flang tips: https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW
Love mine, would definitely recommend. As has been said, they take the edge off the music and really let you hear it clearly - Etymotic High-Fidelity Earplugs,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Gladly! Here's a link to the ones I have. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_3E4MC9SQCZ3C3M484A1R?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Good luck starting out!
Get some good musician’s ear plugs like the Etymotic ER20XS or the Eargasm Earplugs
What you're describing is ambient sound which is pretty common in any pricey BT earbuds. You definitely do not need or want that at a festival. Just get any of the common festival earplugs you see mentioned. They do allow you to hear conversations better but not to the degree your post described.

Been using these for years for practicing and performance.
+1 for the etymotic.
this is what my wife and I used at our last concert. slighlty more portable than the APM :)
These two had been recommended by others in an earlier comment!

I have collected lots of little great accessories that make DJing easier over the years. Not so much fun stuff but practical and most of it is pretty inexpensive. I've been meaning to put together a list for a youtube video but here are some standouts off the top of my head that I really love:
https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW
Ety earplugs are also very good if you only want noise isolation. I think many professional in the industry use them.
Etymotic sells earplugs that allow you to attend a concert/go to a club but reduce noise by 20db.
Don't go to any more loud events without them. If anyone gives you crap about it, tell them to go #$%& themselves.
Buy yourself an inexpensive DB meter and make sure you don't listen to your cans at greater than 80db.
State? Doesn't matter, really. I'd tell your supervisor of your symptoms.
Personally, I'd get something like https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW and wear that. It's only been a day at work, but you definitely need to protect your hearing.
These are legit and pretty inexpensive: https://amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW
I cannot recommend the Etymotic ER20XS enough! I'm pretty obsessive about my hearing since I already have a little tinnitus and there's no real way to correct hearing damage yet. $15 and enough protection to prevent hearing loss while still being able to hear the music well.
I also have a pair of Earasers ($50) that I love. They can be a little finicky but they're clearer than the Etymotics and invisible in your ears.
That being said, I still look for opportunities to be further back in crowds so I can safely listen without earplugs.
As long as we get a clear night, the stars will be popping!
Try these
For that style of plug, Etymotic is cheaper and a known industry standard.
https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/
https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-ETY-Plugs-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard/dp/B0015WJQ7A/
For maximum hearing protection, you can't fuck with these:
https://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-General-Purpose-Disposable-R-01669/
Considering the low cost, it makes sense to have one or both, even if you don't end up using them.
You can get the Etymotics and Horward Leight plugs in smaller sizes if you think those would work better for you.
Get these and keep them in your pocket: https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW
Now you can do basically anything. Concerts, wedding receptions, fireworks, you're good. Now go live your life and stop missing out on stuff. You only have about 90 years, so get out there!
I recommend these or something similar. They’re hi-fidelity and give ~20db of protection. I was recommended these for marching drum corps so they’re good for when it’s super loud. If you’re into percussion and are a Vic fan then these are nice for some brand loyalty and are essentially the same as the former.
I have these. They're awesome. I use them at concerts.
They also make these, but I've never used them.
r/headphones may have some suggestions, but Active Noise Cancelling headphones may not be what you're looking for, and they are generally very expensive. I think many people would even say that ANC headphones aren't worth it unless you purchase the Bose or Sony offerings.
Personally, I use these earplugs when I am very sensitive to sound. They are meant to still be able to hear through, but the physical pain to the body brought on by the sounds, to me, is diminished. They are connected by a string, so I can wear them around my neck all day if I'm not using them, and no one knows they're there. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_9-Q2FbQ10DCWM
Alternatively, when I need to completely block out sound and am fine with music or white noise, I use IEMs with these tips: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002OOWBWK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_HhR2Fb1E6GZ15
There is a good seal, so even with no music on, they block out a lot of noise.
Good luck.
I use these at band practice and at concerts: https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW
They're not really noise isolating per se, but they certainly help lower the volume of everything. They're supposedly designed with musicians in mind. I think their site advertises a 20db decrease.
I recommend these earplugs for concerts and other loud events. They have a string and a rubber pouch. Whenever I need to take them off I put the earplugs in the pouch and hang the whole thing around my neck. Very handy.
Also, for mowing and other loud yardwork, I use ear protection from the local hardware store and pop some earbuds in. I can enjoy my music at a reasonable volume and protect my hearing, too.
I use a musician earplug for my one sensitive ear. I only use it when planning on being around others, or when working with loud equipment. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW
I was really happy with the sound quality on these: Etymotic
i did some research and there seems to be three different levels, single use foam ones, then non custom reusable ones (they have like 3 rubber domes, but i saw a review of the domes breaking and getting stuck in the ear canal, which scared me), and then the custom molded ones that are super expensive but worth the investment if using them a lot.
so i feel like if i felt safe about using the ones like this https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=cm_wl_huc_item which this review scared me https://gyazo.com/6d3cbb28f97707b013dfe482a758ab33
so i might end up saving to buy custom ones. altho there's these which seem sorta like custom ones but also reusable and cheaper than custom, but the string that makes it easy to remove them broke for one reviewer https://www.amazon.com/Earasers-HEM001-Musicians-Plugs-Medium/dp/B00E2D9HAA/ref=sr_1_45?keywords=custom&th=1
I cannot recommend these enough for you. I used to work at an NHL/NBA arena, about 15meters from a giant speaker stack. Buy these. They're $20. just do it.
They're not going to eliminate sound, just think of it as taking the worlds noise and just...dialling it down a bit. You'll still experience the full range of sound, just less of it.
Buy these. Tinnitus is serious fucking business.
https://www.amazon.ca/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Polybag/dp/B00RM6Q9XW
(Full disclosure; they're very uncomfortable at first. Dick around with them a bit until they fit just right, once you have them in properly it feels like nothing at all, but it might take a bit before you figure out how to get them in comfortably.
There are ear plugs that have a threshold. That is, they normally sound pretty much like they are not even there, but when the sound hits a particular decibel level, they close off and block the sound.
Can't remember what they are called though.
The Etymotic might be good -
https://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard-Packaging/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/
And searching Amazon also brought up Eargasms -
https://www.amazon.com/Eargasm-Musicians-Motorcycles-Sensitivity-Conditions/dp/B019M576XW/
Both are classified as High Fidelity Ear Plugs.
Etymotic High-Fidelity Earplugs, ER20XS Standard Fit, 1 pair, Polybag Packaging https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_3vj.zb6KH6JW0
I swear by these ones. I notice very little to no distortion. https://www.amazon.ca/Etymotic-Research-High-Fidelity-Earplugs-Standard/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1475595821&sr=8-1&keywords=etymotic
for pure isolation and not need for music you should consider earplugs though.
If all you want is supreme silence get some Etymotic Earplugs
After going to the Four Year Strong concert I decided I definitely need earplugs so I've been doing a fair bit of research.
Like mee14x suggested, the Etymotic's get recommended a lot and they make professional IEM's too so I feel like I could trust them. They also have a version of the ER20's without the long stem here ($20).
The only ones that seem better for sure are Earasers but they're twice the price ($40) https://www.amazon.com/Earasers-HEM001-Musicians-Plugs-Medium/dp/B00E2D9HAA?th=1
A couple other cheaper suggestions that seem to have good reviews:
Ear Defense ($24, comes with 2 sets at different decibel ratings): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013H8FUVA/?tag=wearplug-20&th=1
DownBeats ($14, comparable to ER20's): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A3Z44R2/?tag=wearplug-20&th=1
By the way, the reason these are supposed to be better than standard foam plugs is because they utilize a filter to block out more sound within certain frequancies to protect your hearing from harmful sounds while still retaining the original sound quality and still being able to hear people talking. And to be clear, I haven't used any of these myself yet. I've just been doing some research and will be buying a pair soon so I appreciate any further help and suggestions.
Etymotic makes excellent earplugs that don't muffle sound, they just make it quieter.
Etymotic High Fidelity Earplugs, ER20XS Standard Fit, 1 pair https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RM6Q9XW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_rDuOybM6T6JPW
These have been my go to for 2 years. I love them.
No joke, I wore these to John Wick 2. It seems that theatres with poor quality sound systems think they are compensating by turning up the volume. Though all theatres play the sound too loud regardless.
rather than the old foam ear plugs that you can buy at walmart for a few cents, you can get a decent pair of earplugs meant to not just muffle all sounds, but cancel out offensive sounds, while still allowing you to hear stuff you want to, conversation etc.
ones like these , there is a ton of choices. and they'll also look better/not draw attention like the bright orange ones you'd find at walmart or similar
