Everyone has their favorite seller for risers. I used many different ones and risers are inherently crappy so I always had dead one or flaky issues. I switched over to the below risers once I saw them on Amazon. I started buying them back when they had zero feedback, I was just willing to try them. I now have 36 of these specific risers on my rigs and haven't received a bad one yet nor have any of them died.

Thanks! This is super useful! Really good information.
One question: Are these risers okay? I'm confused with the risers to be honest... https://www.amazon.com/EXPLOMOS-Graphics-Extension-Ethereum-Capacitors/dp/B074Z754LT/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1515008294&sr=1-6&keywords=008S+riser
Hmm. OK I think I get it. that makes sense but this is where I get all confused.
The PCIe slot may allow for the card to draw up to 5.5A (which is 660 watts right?). But the 1080 Ti specs say the card will only draw up to 280 watts. 2.34 amps. If the SATA connection can handle 4.5 amps then where is the problem? (Not arguing, just still confused).
Going on the assumption that you're right:
I currently have these risers: https://www.amazon.com/EXPLOMOS-Graphics-Extension-Ethereum-Capacitors/dp/B074Z754LT/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=gpumine-20&linkId=ed0038f3afa9c6cb62a8e7b2920990a1
I would take the adapter you linked above, connect the 6-pin to the riser, connect both SATA connections to my SATA cable, and connect the SATA cable to the PSU?
If I have that correct, my next question is: The provided EVGA SATA cables have 4 SATA plugs on each cable. Can I use one cable to power two GPUs? That would use all 4 plugs on the one SATA cable to power two 1080 Ti GPUs. Is that still within a safe range? If yes, super. If not, I am back to having one SATA cable per GPU and still haven't solved my problem.

Your only option is to get a PCIe riser and relocate the card so that it's hanging inside the case. This isn't ideal but unless you move the motherboard to an open frame, I don't know what other options you have. Here's a good PCIe riser:

/r/ethermining has a detailed guide, I assume Walton mining will be quite similar.
Risers these days are much better.
For my motherboard I use: ASUS PRIME Z270-P
CPU: Intel BX80662G4400 Pentium Processor G4400 3.3 GHz (you can downgrade to celeron for like 10-15 bucks less, but I bought pentium since a $10 difference for a little better processor seemed reasonable. Not sure it makes much of a difference tbh tho)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074Z754LT - these are hands down the best risers ive ever used, they have three different ways to power it and these are some of the newest version of risers I believe, never had any problem with them. They worked beautifully. It is recomended to use molex over sata. Also never use a molex sata converter, and thats why its important to read a guide, lots of reports of fires doing that.
8 GB ddr4 RAM works fine
EDIT: And the bot links to the guide im talking about haha. good bot.
Got them on Amazon:

Freezing of windows while mining is a sign of cheap risers. Take it from someone who has 3 rigs and troubleshooted this problem for weeks before I isolated the bad riser.
I recommend replace all risers with these:

Awesome, Thanks. I'll pick up some of these. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074Z754LT/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A2JG7U147IMRBO&psc=1

I just solved my problem by buying a decent usb riser from Amazon : https://www.amazon.com/EXPLOMOS-Graphics-Extension-Ethereum-Capacitors/dp/B074Z754LT/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1518701471&sr=8-7&keywords=riser
These two both work and I use them, I prefer the red one because I can tell when a riser is failing.
explomos is what i've used. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B074Z754LT/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and haven't had any problems
i use these risers with 1-1 sata, 1-1 molex, and 1-1 6 pin options and have had no issues with heat etc.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074Z754LT/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
So what you would recommend instead then?
i dont remember why. but my research led me to these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074Z754LT/ref=twister_B074Z89MX7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I had good luck with these - 6 out 6 working fine! https://www.amazon.com/EXPLOMOS-Graphics-Extension-Ethereum-Capacitors/dp/B074Z754LT/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1515808288&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=esplomo+riser
I was thinking of picking these up and giving them a try. They have a direct SATA input as well as molex and 6pin.
I just had this question as well, for some reason these don't show up on Amazon when doing simple searches, they have multiple connections and are about as much as buying a bunch of cables. I intended to use the 12 4 pin molex connectors that are on my 1200w but it has a 6pin built in as well.
