I've bought one of these great, great Amazon Fire TV Sticks and it has not set anything on fire. Total fake news. Very amazing product. ^(Really, really great.)
This will change with the new Fire TV Stick 4K with all-new Alexa Voice Remote, streaming media player will be released on October 31, 2018 https://www.amazon.com/Introducing-Fire-TV-Stick-4K-with-All-New-Alexa-Voice-Remote/dp/B079QHML21/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1539934424&sr=8-11&keywords=amazon+fire+stick#tech. This more than enough to handle anything Kodi has. I personally use and recommend a Nvidia Shield worth the cost to me. But the new 4K Fire TV Stick is cheap at 49.99
I’ve had this one with the crew being my main squeeze. And it’s on sale for Black Friday.
Limited-time deal: Fire TV Stick 4K streaming device with Alexa Voice Remote (includes TV controls) | Dolby Vision https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079QHML21/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_dl_K1VBF2GBEVZ2C99GC52S
There's 2 4ks, 3 if you count the Max. This is the 2018 version, and it says "There's a newer version available" that has the new remote. It's hard to say if it's actually a newer stick, though. The hardware is the same, so it's probably just the new remote that makes it a "newer version".
Oh then that's your problem as the Android software that is baked into TV's is usually shite. Seriously, grab a 4k firestick from amazon, as they are on sale right now for $25 And not to mention, Sony doesn't bother to update the software when it breaks. Get the stick, you'll have until January 2020 to return it, and see if it solves the issue. I mean you just need to google "Sony Android TV sucks" and you'll see just how horrible it is.
The Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K is currently $34.99, and you can save an additional 25% ($8.75) right now. I currently run this, and have for a couple years, and it works well.
I’ve read all the comments and replies. Amazon Fire Stick 4K is exactly what /u/SteveKep needs right now. If he wants something more later he can updgrade. He’s looking for a simple, entry level for Netflix and Prime.
Amazon Stick 4K Steve, that’s your answer.
Fire TV Stick 4K streaming device with Alexa built in, Dolby Vision, includes Alexa Voice Remote, latest release https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079QHML21/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_OmWvFbFQ7VTWV
They are fairly cheap and easy to use. If you have a 4k television, a $50 Amazon Firestick 4k will allow you to get full 4k streaming and it works with pretty much every major streaming service, even Disney+. Services like Hulu and Netflix cap content streamed to internet browsers to either 1080 or 720 resolution, so for my new 4k projector it didn't make sense to keep streaming thru my computer anyways.
Do other wireless devices on wifi in the same room get much beyond 3 Mbps? If so, you may have a problem with the fire tv and need to replace it.
It's $25 right now for the holidays.
https://www.amazon.com/Fire-TV-Stick-4K-with-Alexa-Voice-Remote/dp/B079QHML21
Have the same issue with Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K. Was watching Goliath and the sound was terrible. Switched to my tablet and streamed with Chromecast and it was ok. I will have to try on Roku in the other room and see if it is the same. Will get a Roku Ultra for the livingroom too.
If that's all then a complete reset shouldn't be that hard to recover from. It's amazing what a reset can accomplish sometimes. That said, the 1st gen Stick is getting pretty long in the tooth at this point and the 4K Stick would be a big upgrade.
Also, upvote for the Remo Williams reference.
Amazon’s new Fire TV Stick 4K is effectively replacing the company’s Fire TV with 4K Ultra HD, which the company introduced last year. “We have sold through the earlier Fire TV 4K edition inventory and we do not plan to replenish supply at this time,” says a spokesperson.
Pre-order HERE. Official release is October 31st.

Do u mean that link above? Is that android on it? And I can install kodi directly on it?
Did this Roku support page offer any guidance to help your situation? (See its links.) I admit I can't hear well enough to enjoy a high quality sound system so I haven't tried this.
For Fire TV stick and the Fire TV Cube, see the chart on this page for their technical details.
Mmmm I know this is well outside of this subreddit, but have you considered Fire TV Stick 4k? - https://www.amazon.com/Fire-TV-Stick-4K-with-Alexa-Voice-Remote/dp/B079QHML21
If you have [legally purchased] 4k movies on your local network, you can stream those with Plex Server (which can run on something like Synology NAS). Otherwise, it supports all streaming services pretty much, and 4k playback is excellent.
Yes you are. You are forgetting the unfriendliness of setting up a pi and troubleshooting problems. Burning the OS is easy, but setting up everything else? Well I hope you are great at knowing command lines that have been passed down from 30 years ago. If something doesn't work right, well that's your problem for doing something that the devs/community didn't support.
Grab the firestick. Netflix will work. HDR/Dolbyvision will work (4k stick that is $29.99 right now), and you won't need to worry about troubleshooting magical problems that just pop up. If you want "other" apps, install apktime, and go to town.

I'm going to do my best to be constructive with my criticism, but you don't come into an issue and complaints having a positive experience. Apologies to the mods who have to deal with this.
I've come from Funimation sub. With the purchase anything new (aside from existing runs) would go to CR instead, so arrival was inevitable. That said I'm appalled by the terrible UI + UX stuff that I question the validity of the purchase from AT&T (and/or wth were the AT&T devs doing?). Between 5 different access types/devices, I've had 5 different experiences with CrunchyRoll.
Smart TV w/ Google Chromecast:
Between multiple devices I never had as numerous UX issues like this with Funimation (though I encountered more buffering issues in some cases, but UI was sync'd perfectly), so it's sad to see a pricey purchase like this have a result of poor UX. I have 0 idea if this is true but if I were one of the folks making the decision about Bleach TYBW arc, at least Disney has a consistent UX so I feel that's deserved from that perspective.
Amazon firestick has the YouTube app
Fire TV Stick 4K streaming device with Alexa Voice Remote (includes TV controls) | Dolby Vision https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079QHML21/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_dl_XPN72YV0CZNRA6FAR0WJ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Ok. I found an article on it, this is the fire stick we have:
https://www.amazon.com/Fire-TV-Stick-4K-with-Alexa-Voice-Remote/dp/B079QHML21
You need to get an internet connection via DSL and setup wifi in your house using a router (most internet providers will set you up with wifi in your house). You can then connect all your devices to that wifi (phone, TV etc.) Subsequently you can cast from your phone to the TV using chromecast or similar screen sharing. If your TV is a Smart TV it should be able to use existing apps. If the apps are too old and cannot be updated, you may consider buying a streaming device such as
Roku https://www.roku.com/products/players
Fire https://www.amazon.com/Fire-TV-Stick-4K-with-Alexa-Voice-Remote/dp/B079QHML21
Android TV https://store.google.com/config/chromecast_google_tv?hl=en-US
Apple TV https://www.apple.com/tv-home/

The above arrangement will avoid using up your phone hotspot data.
According to the Fire TV Stick page, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079QHML21?ref=MarsFS_SMP_Stick4K, the "We want you to know" section says that "Dolby Atmos is available on select Prime Video, Netflix, and Disney+ titles when connected to compatible equipment". The Max page has the same statement about "select titles" so it does not appear you need to upgrade to the Max version.

Thanks. I have a decent understanding of containers and codecs although I'm not an expert for sure.

I agree on the play-ability being hardware dependent - which is why I specified FireTV. To be more specific I am using both of the following:

I did find this list online, but it is 5 years old at this point and likely refers to the older FireTV hardware:
http://www.multipelife.com/amazon-fire-tv-supported-file-formats.html
I highly suggest getting the Amazon 4K stick. I have it and it plays basically everything you can throw at it without transcoding. It is also one of the cheapest devices you can get that can play everything.

You can find the Jellyfin TV client in the Amazon app store so it is simple to install that as well.

Fire TV Stick 4K streaming device with Alexa Voice Remote | Dolby Vision | 2018 release https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079QHML21/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_dlC_G4-WFb49FWM2C?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I'm in. My Fire TV Stick (2K) is driving me crazy, since I bought Fire TV Sticks (4K) for my other TVs. The 4K sticks rule & and 2K sticks drool...
Thx for posting!
> We won't be sitting at extreme angles but few would at least be sitting slightly off the edge of the screen sitting 12 feet away.
Viewing angles should not be an issue at that distance. At 8-10 feet we have no issues with off angle viewing (I would say ~20º off centre).
As for the audio, I would suggest an external streamer. With Black Friday sales right now you can pick up an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K for about $30 (depending on your region). That will plug directly into your AVR, control the power and volume on the TV and AVR (with either the Sony or Fire TV remotes) and sidestep any weird ARC/eARC issues. An OTG cable would allow you to connect your external HDD as well. Very reasonable investment and very user friendly with a high WAF.
Using the System Status Monitor menu on the new Fire TV Stick 4K connected to my Sony W630B I can confirm that Netflix is using HEVC for 1080p streams. Rates I saw for various shows seemed to fluctuate from 3-7Mbps for the 1080p stream. Also noticed that most streams were using BT.709 10-bit SDR colour format.
For comparison Prime Video seems to be using 4-10Mbps HEVC for 1080p video streams with BT.709 8-bit SDR colour.
Obviously use of the HEVC format is device dependent.
Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K has Silk browser with accelerated video playback (Firefox is also available). It pretty much has everything a cord cutter enthusiast needs such as Kodi, browser with accelerated video playback, Acestream, official DRM apps, unofficial apps, etc.

This may not be what you want to hear... But I'd ditch the Roku and get an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K. It's on sale at the moment. It's incredible what that thing is compatible with. I personally have an Nvidia Shield TV, but I recommend the Fire Stick 4K to all my friends/family who I share my server with.
I just bought this fire stick for $25 if you have Amazon prime. There is a coupon code 4KFIRETV. I love it. It has Alexa commands too. Like "put on Breaking Bad"
I gotcha, well I hate to be the bearer of bad news you could have gotten then new 4K stick straight from Amazon for about the same price. New refurb.
The stick 4k, specs, supports Dolby Vision and a slightly faster CPU. 4K pendant specs
Hope this helps.
Amazon fire TV stick 4k says it supports HRD10+.
I love my Apple TV, but it is very expensive, especially if you are only using it occasionally for things like Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.
I am not familiar with Roku, but I don have a Firestick on one of my TV’s and it is great for what it is.The 4K version is on sale for $24.99 right now (regular $50) and if you don’t need 4K, the normal version is on sale for $20 the normal version is on sale for $20 (regular $40). Just note, there is a coupon code I believe you have to manually put in at checkout (it says it on the product page). I honestly think that is your best bet, especially if you already use Amazon stuff.
I'd jump on it but I can't change my plan as I am grandfathered into the $16 a month plan. Amazon is putting the 4K Firestick on sale for cyber Monday at $24.99.
https://www.amazon.com/Fire-TV-Stick-4K-with-Alexa-Voice-Remote/dp/B079QHML21/
It's this. Just need to jb and install Kodi on it. I could attempt it myself but would rather use a trusted source given the choice.

Firesticks are going for $5 use code 4KFIRETV. It doesn’t work for everyone tho idk why, worked for me tho. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079QHML21/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
4 hours later, they do seem to be on sale now!
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079QHML21/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fab_0IEHFbP51GK8S
Fire TV Stick 4K is $29.99 with (free 1 month trial) Prime now
You should also check you motion settings on the TV. This would be my suggestion.
Picture settings > Advanced settings > Motion > Motionflow (Off) Picture settings > Advanced settings > Motion > CineMotion (Auto)
If that doesn't help then you're likely running into an issue with the internal app being stuck at 60Hz since internal apps don't trigger a refresh rate switch.
A Mi Box S or Fire TV Stick 4K would probably be your lowest cost solution for an external device that supports refresh rate switching but if you need to pass HD audio like TrueHD or DTS-HD MA then you'll have to step up to a Shield TV.
For OP...
They're on sale now.

Something like an Amazon Fire TV Stick or Roku Streaming Stick sounds exactly like what you're looking for. They're basically the smart part of a smart TV, minus the TV part. Just plug the stick into an HDMI port and power and you're good to go.

Get a Fire TV Stick 4K and a Premiumize.me account. The Fire TV Sticks are currently on sale for $35 on Amazon. I have two of them connected via WiFi and they work beautifully. Premiumize will provide you with a good selection of 4K movie streams (more than, IMO, RealDebrid). Of course, you need to have a decently fast Internet connection to download those big 4k files. I have an Internet connection rated at 150Mbps and never have buffering issues. Enjoy your new TV! :)
The Fire TV Stick 4K is $25 with the code: 4KFIRETV on Amazon . It’s a good streaming device if you just need it for just Netflix and Sling.
Hi there! The 4k version is $35 in the US, and 60€ on Amazon.es, so almost half price - that's why I was tempted.
If you just want one player, check out PlaySignage . You can link and manage one device for free without limitations and only start paying with the second one.
For hardware, I recommend you just get an Amazon Fire TV stick .

Here are the things you'd need to do to get started:

Play Digital Signage system only relies on the network when publishing the content to your device. Once your device downloads the content, it can go offline and still work.

Hope this helps.
I probably wouldn't start at the Apple TV 4K, maybe try a Fire TV Stick 4K or a Chromecast with Google TV. Both are perfectly acceptable reasonably priced options.
I think your cheapest option for 4K HEVC 10bit playback is the new Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079QHML21/
Ditch the Mi Box S and get Fire TV Stick 4K, it already supports Dolby Vision (and HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG).
Get a 4k fire stick from amazon.

Should work out less than 70 dollars.
You could go standard fire stick 15 nzd cheaper..
