That's sounds a lot like having depression too which is a huge beast in and of itself. Deal with that myself too and it's a struggle to just be motivated to really even get out of bed. So I feel for the family friend.
I use Exercise Bands to help me drop weight. It can be done while sitting down comfortably and there are loads of exercise videos on YouTube (and DVDs) that show seated position workouts for folks like him and me.
Might also be wise to try finding other things that also interest him instead of feeling the need to eat to fill in the gaps. I know it's super tempting to just chow down on something, because it's easy and it's something to do that can be done easily for enjoyment.
I have these from Amazon and they work great! I always use the X-Heavy with crab walks, donkey kicks and clams I can definitely feel it! They also come with the little pouch to keep them all together. Only complant, my husband asked why my hands smelt like weed when i got back from the gym... So they do have a smell first time out of the package. https://www.amazon.com/Fit-Simplify-Resistance-Exercise-Instruction/dp/B01AVDVHTI/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1521742140&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=resistance+bands&psc=1
I don't have issues with my knees collapsing but if science says it will give me a sweet ass I guess I'll do it. Any suggestion on a which bands to get for a 6'2 guy with a very wide stance? They all seem to be 12' at varying thicknesses and these seem to be most popular on amazon.
They are great! I have been having knee issues from past sports flare up again and resistance bands allow me to work my glutes and legs without irritating my knee from heavy weights! I really like the Heavy and X-Heavy bands from this set on Amazon. I also love that I can use them if I am at home and I feel like the gym that day was not enough,
You can buy better/nicer (and way cheaper!) ones on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Fit-Simplify-Resistance-Exercise-Instruction/dp/B01AVDVHTI/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1517002085&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=fitness+bands&psc=1
I felt the OTF ones at my studio and they were super cheap and basically garbage. Makes sense, since they have a ton and will just keep replacing them.
I bought this set for <$10 off amazon but only use the black one, since it's the highest resistance one. I'm a hairy legged dude, so I now trim my legs to prevent the band from messing with my hair. The bands don't rub my skin too terribly so it works out.

Here’s link for ya. Just a simple cheap pair like these is what I have. Start low and slowly work your way up. You want whatever band you’re currently on to be pretty much nothing before moving up
I usually go to the gym, but I also work out at home! I use resistance bands (Fit Simplify Resistance Loop Exercise Bands with Instruction Guide and Carry Bag, Set of 5 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AVDVHTI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_i_7J0S6MWPXZFY4Z397AA7) these are a great alternative to actual weights, and there are a lot of tutorials/workouts online for a guides on how to work out with them!
They suck, but they work so well. I got some similar to these, they have a good range on them so will last a while and are inexpensive.
Are these the right ones you were talking about? There is like 77k good reviews. I see many use these with barbells which I will not be getting, what would you recommend them for with my setup?
Hi, thank you for this.
Im a college student who used to play basketball in hs and workout regularly. Over time my parents refused to support me in getting a gym membership and refused to buy weights or resistance bands or any sort of workout material i would need for muscle building/toning because they think that once they buy it i wont use it or something. Ive constantly asked for 2 years. Anyways if possible i would like resistance bands. Its simple, i dont need weights to tone.
Nice list. I’d suggest more people try resistant loops since they take up less space for storage and less space to be used. Resistance Loops
No, that thing is shit because it only allows a single motion. This is what I'm talking about.
Get the band. Cut it so it's not a loop. Then by grasping and end in both hand you can exercise all the important muscles in the forearm by changing the position of your hands relative to each other.
A lot of sets of exercise bands that you can buy actually come with a little packet that has exercises for your whole body. Abs may be part of it but I’m not sure. I own these from Amazon and they are super cheap and great for just starting out. They come in 5 different resistance levels.

I had a similar problem. I'm using a resistance band (like these) in place of the strap, and it works great. I've been using a couple of binder clips to hold the strap in place, but I'm sure there are better ways. The tension is adjustable, and it sticks to the sleeve better than the included strap.
On amazon I can’t find anything, I I kinda want this one but idk if it will fit for when I do hamstring curls
First, cut calories, that's the most important step for now and probably the next year.
Start the Recommended routine and stick with it.
Think of your new diet and workout routine as establishing new habits for yourself, not a temporary fix.
My first purchases were a pull up bar, dip bars, and resistance bands:
Yes, and if you've never done any weightlifting before I'd recommend a set of resistance bands so you can do assisted pullups.
I’m not familiar enough with GZCLP and I’d say to add it on, not sub out exercises for it. (Unless you do banded split squats. I sub those out.) I use clamshells and side steps more for pre-hab/rehab, but it all depends on your goals and how much time you have at the gym.
Is a physio band like how long strip of stretchy? If you can tie it in a loop around your knees and it’s not too much tension, I say go for it. (If it’s not challenging enough, just do more reps and hold at the top!) I have these. Another thing you can do is use a light resistance band around your knees when you squat to remind you to actively press your knees out. Bands are also something you can ask your gym to purchase. My gym has a bunch of different ones.
Your whole body is a weight.
Squats and leg kick backs can be done with no additional weights, but you can also get a cheap set of resistance bands if you do want something extra. Something like this can help https://www.amazon.com/Fit-Simplify-Resistance-Exercise-Instruction/dp/B01AVDVHTI/
Interesting gif. Well I want these. Don't really need it as I can just lift Baby K up and down to get a workout on. But, they'd be fun to have. Plus I could probably make a giant rubber band gun with them at some point.
get a multi pack so as you get stronger you can use the bands with more resistance
any sporting goods store will have em as well
I would recommend getting some resistance bands (around $10 on amazon) and doing exercises such as glute bridges, frog pumps, kickbacks, clams, squats, etc with them. If you google resistance band glute exercises a lot of examples will come up that will show you how to do them.
Start with the lower weight ones and once you learn the movements and feel your glutes activating then increase the resistance weight!
Edit: I have these myself for about a year and they work fine.
I am trying to buy some resistance bands here in Australia for abductor work and so on, and ahh... the choices don't seem particularly good. I have kmart, $8 for 4 bands. It says made of "rubber". http://www.kmart.com.au/product/4-micro-stretch-bands/1565303
Then there is rebel sport, a single resistance band for $15, http://www.rebelsport.com.au/Product/PTP-Heavy-MicroBand/419949?menuFrom=40908
which seems like a massive rip off and has "20 exercises included!" or some stupid gimmick. It doesn't even say what it is made of.
Then I guess I could order from amazon https://www.amazon.com/Fit-Simplify-Resistance-Exercise-Instruction/dp/B01AVDVHTI/ref=zg_bs_3407931_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=QC3TP5048QKZ3307WNK9
5 resistance bands made of latex for $16 after shipping. It seems ridiculous that I would have to get something so simple from overseas. Yet I have the same issue with foam rollers. I like the hard polypropylene rollers on amazon, yet... not a single foam roller in Australia is made of pp. They just sell trigger point overpriced pvc pipes. Ehhhh... the problems of living on an island.
Loads do, myself included!
Ok so admittedly I haven't kept up with the gym-lifting much in the past couple of months, but before that I was combining a 1x/week moderately heavy lifting session with ~50 miles/week of running, mostly 5k focus but this year is shaping out to begrudgingly become more of a 10k-marathon. ANYWAY, back in college, I was running about as much, all for 1500m/mile/k/5k/6k XC, and lifting twice a week, a bit heavier but still not "powerlifter" heavy (for a scope, at 115lbs I was occasionally doing 3x5 deadlifts at 145lbs, but sometimes I'd just do 3x8 at 105 or whatever). Went find, the key was to always do the heavy lifts on the hard running workout days.
Now that I'm in my mid-20s and "whatever" (though I still care about PRs and aim to get them and have within this year), I do more what you're doing. Single-legged movements are key, so I'm so glad to see that you're already doing them. When I'm at home, I use loads of bands of relatively strong resistance for clamshells, sissy squats, etc. I also use a 15lb kettlebell for bulgarian split squats and for single-legged deadlifts. When I'm at the gym, I go into those with a bit more weight, slightly lighter regular deadlifts than I used to do, because I don't have as much raw strength as I did when I lifted regularly, rows, OHP, full-on 60lb barbell hip thrusts, etc.
One general bodyweight routine I recommend is the Myrtl Routine, which is targeted towards common running weaknesses. I also recommend you order a pack of resistance bands on Amazon, like these (just picked a random set of exercise bands, shop as you please, but those are cheap and look fine). You'll really be able to be sure you're strengthening the right muscles when you use those bands, and you can elevate your exercises to the next level. Bands are GREAT tools, and it's awesome how simple and cheap they are!

Bought these on amazon! They work well.
Hey, I saw someone recommending putting a more rigid one of those stretchy exercise resistance bands like from physical therapy up the front legs of the Antilop high chair to create a footrest (apparently it's a lot more ergonomic for baby to have a footrest). And also using an old shower curtain as a splat mat for the floor.
I hate the idea of buying a $25 footrest and a $50 Catchy thingy (that's $75 in accessories for a $20 high chair!!!). So just thought I'd pass those ideas along.
This is the type of resistance band they were using as a footrest, but you could prolly find a few for free from ppl who have been to physical therapy or something:
I bought this set from Amazon, and I am very happy with them.

Any advice for resistance bands off Amazon? Like these
There are a lot of exercises that target quads and glutes that can help achieve a more feminine physique!
Squats are going to be your main compound exercise. To really hit glutes though you need to be squatting deep, below parallel, even if this means decreasing weight. Above parallel you are basically only working your quads.
Then you want to do accessory exercises like leg presses, clam shells with a band or on the machine, split squats (a type of lunge), and band or cable exercises like side kicks, donkey kicks and similar backwards kick type exercises, being careful to work your glutes rather than lower back. Plus hip thrusts or glute bridges.
You can build a whole at-home glute routine with little more than a couple of these round loop exercise bands that go around your legs.
An at-home band-only routine might look like:
High-rep deep bodyweight or dumbbell squats
Glute bridges with band around thighs working up to single-leg glute bridges
Banded donkey kicks
Tabletop leg extensions both to the side and back, with or without a band around legs
Some of these exercises are very feminine-coded and awkward to do in public. I avoid hip thrusts and donkey kicks at the gym because there's an "Instagram thot" stereotype around these specific exercises. But with an exercise band you can do them alone in your bedroom while you watch TV or whatever.
You could also get into bicycling as that builds quads, hamstrings, and glutes and even if you're in the closed it's exercise and you can convince parents it's a "manly" hobby.
Lifting weights is also a "masculine" hobby that transphobic parents will be thrilled for you to take up. The YMCA usually offers one free personal training session with your membership where they can help you learn good technique for the exercises you want to do and help you build a program, there are also tons of program resources online. "Starting Strength" is a solid resource.
I LOVE bodybuilding dot com's free resources that show pics and videos of different exercises, which are grouped based on what muscles they target.
https://www.bodybuilding.com/exercises
And remember ladies!!! You HAVE to eat big to get big. That butt won't grow itself it needs protein! Not just pickles, PROTEIN!
Source: transmasc who's been working out way too much for many years lol
If the length of the bands unstretched is 1'-2', are you sure you're not using booty bands/hip circles?
Even in Jeff's picture you attached, it looks like he's using a band which would accommodate 35-110lbs of resistance (orange band here).
You could look for rubber Exercise Bands Similar to these. Those ones are a loop but only 2 inches wide. These ones are 6 inches wide, but not a loop, so you would need to use glue that can bond to rubber to make a belt with them.

I would do some more toning exercises. I do resistance bands for toning like these.

I have these bands that I really like. I use them outside of BB but I also use them to do a lateral band walk instead of the x-walk. I use them for stretching, for making regular unweighted squats more challenging, etc. I tend to collapse my knees in so having the extra resistence prompts me to push against the resistence instead of collapsing in.

I also use gloves often, but mine don't come above my wrist. I jsut prefer them because my hands get slippery or hurt from the barbels someties.
I also run but I personally don't carry a water bottle, but I know a lot of people use camelback backpacks! If you serach water backpack on amazon, you can see some similar things that are much cheaper. And I'm sure you could fit your keys in there too. For my keys, I have my house key on one of these, so I can easily remove it and just stick that in my shorts pocket. https://www.amazon.com/Lucky-Line-Keychain-Nickel-Plated-70701/dp/B00HZ0BOR6/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_263_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=9SJM677CZMTJ2J862REA
I got mine from Amazon. It's kinda like this. I use it for leg workouts too
If you have resistance bands like these (the non handled, circular ones), you can do the arms toning without having a weighted object to hold. Its a little hard to do unilateral work - bicep is possible, triceps and shoulders not so much, but you can just do both arms and get a reeeeaal good workout.
I once saw this really hot big booty guy working out while I was at work and he was using this thing called a booty band. I NEED IT. this thing and he side stepped with it.
No, I meant for shoulder rehab. This is what i got:
I guess you could try getting 2 sets for facepulls with the bar, but if you're going to do facepulls maybe you should just get rings instead.
I agree that a lot of them are the same. i bought these off Amazon in October: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AVDVHTI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. And they are fine! Haven't broken. The only thing is that even the heaviest ones aren't THAT heavy. I hardly ever use the light ones and just use the two heaviest.
The ones Amazon has will work equally as well. I have a set of them.

I snagged these off Amazon a month or so ago.
Edit: Just saw that YTWL video and these are NOT ideal for that as they're incredibly short.
