I did this. Four story townhome. Wired from the garage up to all three floors. And I have no experience with construction or anything.
Good things to have: - a powerful corded drill - a long flex bit (I used this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DNEEJ0C/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) - an endoscope to look inside walls before you destroy them / check where wires are running... these run for like $100 on Amazon.
I really got some use out of the endoscope. There was a number of areas in my ceilings/floors where there was weird compartments... I woulda been screwed if I couldn't see in.
