Try flydigi wee t2 gamepad
Flydigi Wee2T Mobile Game Controller Telescopic for Android of MOBA Games, Compatible with Mobilephone of 3.5-6.3 Inch (75-165mm). Not Support iOS 13.4 and Above https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TD4K8HZ/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_JRBTEY77917DSYSEP88G
I use the Flydigi Wee 2 for my phone and it's great! The only downside is the L3 and R3 aren't clickable, instead they have separate buttons for them, but you get used to it real quick
If you can spare it, I'd pick up a Flydigi Wee 2. I've had mine for about 6 months and I'm ultimately really happy with the performance. The analog sticks do not click in though, they're replaced by buttons on the side. Recently tried switching to a Saitake 7007f but have had mixed results. Happy hunting OP
That's a Flydigi Wee 2T (amazon link)
Not the cheapest ($50), but from the reviews I've read, one of the best available.
In this case, no phone parts were used. It's an entire phone with a controller around it. https://www.amazon.com/Flydigi-Controller-Bluetooth-Telescopic-Connecting/dp/B07TD4K8HZ/

I think you nailed it. https://smile.amazon.com/Flydigi-Controller-Bluetooth-Telescopic-Connecting/dp/B07TD4K8HZ
> Actually you can, with a phone you can have more than one controller and use them on need: one key chain, one telescopic, one standard BT controller
That definitely is an option, but I feel like that goes against what most people are looking for when they're evaluating a portable platform. It definitely is for me, at least. I don't want to have to juggle multiple controllers for different purposes, figure our storage for them, and then inevitably find myself stuck restricted (be it functionality or comfort) on some games when I'm out of the house for days because I brought controller X instead of controller Y. And then you have the added on cost of buying and keeping up with several controller options now...
You're totally right: people can make it work like that. I just find that pretty far from ideal, I guess. Heck, I already feel bogged down with all the accessories and controllers I have for my home consoles, you know what I mean? This is just the last thing I want for a device that I'm wanting to carry around in my pocket and play with ease where ever and whenever that urge hits.
> They are not necessarily expensive either: ...
Again, you're totally right; you definitely can dive for bargains in controllers that work for your phone. But in my experience, you get what you pay for; for every cheap controller like this that works as intended, it seems like there are half a dozen that disconnect frequently, malfunction, or have defects. Even when you go for a more "premium" chinese controller, like I did at one point with the Flydigi Wee2T, you're still facing a lot of pros and cons with the added frustration of managing software on the phone against OS updates to ensure your controller works with as many games as possible.
To be totally clear, it's not like I think it's a waste of time to use controllers on a phone or to keep a selection of them on hand to fit specific use cases; not at all! I just think that at that point, you're not really saving yourself much time, money, or effort, and the "convenience" of it is a big argument I hear come up when talking about playing on android like this.
In the end, it's just another path forward with its own obstacles to get to that end point of sweet, sweet retro gaming.
I can vouch for the Retroid Pocket 2, but it does take some fiddling to get it running. I like mine and got one for my brother.
Here's what I'd do though. If she has a good phone (any of the recent Galaxies or Pixels, but even a phone that is a couple years old should be fine) I'd get her a Flydigi Wee2T controller or maybe spend the extra money for the Razer Kishi (I have both, frankly I prefer the Wee2T by a small margin). I'd throw some games on her phone and spend a few bucks on the apps that will play them and turn her smartphone into her gaming device.

If she has an iPhone, you could probably do the same, but that's where my knowledge hits a wall since I've never used an iPhone, but there is a Razer Kishi for iPhone and a few Google searches show that you can play the games on it.

As for tablet controller - Ipega 9083 https://www.amazon.com/s?k=ipega+9083
Okay, so to achieve everything you are looking for, I would recommend emulating on a high end Android device. If you don't have one, the cheapest bang for your buck would be a used LG G8 with a Snapdragon chipset.
Now, on the Android device of your choosing, download and install Dolphin MMJ, and place your backup of TTYD somewhere on your devices storage.
Depending on how powerful your device is, you can tweak the internal resolution up to 1080p, install widescreen cheat codes to play in unstreached, true widescreen, and even use the HD texture pack with it!
Here's a quick video of me playing TTYD with 21:9 screen ratio, texture pack, upscaled in 1080p on a Galaxy S20+: https://vimeo.com/428722075
Now there is the matter of a controller, and there are already some good options around if you already have a PS4, or Xbox One, as both of those controllers have phone clip attachments that cost around $10 each.
If you dont have one of those, I recommend an 8bitdo SN30 Pro+ w/ phone clip or for something more portable, the Wee2T.
There are also lots of helpful folks over at r/emulationonandroid that can help answer any questions you might have!
you'll probably have to use one of the telescopic controllers that turns the phone into a device similar to a nintendo switch... something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Flydigi-Controller-Bluetooth-Telescopic-Connecting/dp/B07TD4K8HZ as they can typically hold larger phones and tablets.
The ones that are shaped like a normal controller with a phone holder above it (this style) typically can't fit the larger devices.
Flydigi Wee 2t can be found for $50 on Amazon. I've done a comparison between the Wee 2 and Daqi M1 here. TLDR: The Daqi M1 is pretty good if you can find it for under $30. It gets the job done, but the build quality and analog stick leaves a bit to desire. I recommend spending a bit more for the Wee 2 as you'll get something that is better built, easier to repair, better d-pad, and better analog sticks.
I bought it from Amazon, specifically Amazon Australia

The Flydigi Wee 2T is what you want.
Do some googling on it; there are plenty of reddit posts and YouTube videos talking about it.
Here's a solid review from a small tech blog.
I just recently ordered one and it's been great.
I recommend ordering through Amazon so you're covered by their return policy.
This is the way.

Had mine for quite a while and have loved every minute.
The Wee 2 works wonders for me. As others have stated the Saitake and the Ipega are also good choices.
