A high velocity dryer is a huge time saver if you have the budget and patience to desensitize your dood to it. I use this one: Flying One High Velocity 4.0 Hp Motor Dog Pet Grooming Force Dryer w/Heater.
Yes, you want one specifically for dogs--flying pig on amazon is the model I use:
I wouldn't really recommend anything cheaper but I know people get away with shelandy dryers.
We have 2 long haired dogs and cats. Forget the Roombas as you need to vacuum with a legit vacuum a few times a week. As others have said, a thin blanket or sheet on the bed for the puppies presence that you can remove at bedtime.
Groom/brush him as often as possible. I use this dryer and between that and brushing them out, man does a bunch of fur get blown out: https://www.amazon.com/Flying-Pig-Grooming-Purple-Dryer/dp/B00JV33WJ8
Like your pup, fur is mans best friend, so embrace it. What doesn't kill you will make you stronger. Ya, I have asthma and my American Alsatian is trying to kill me. (jk)
Definitely no professional haircuts required. The game changer for grooming one of these breeds is a high velocity blow drier. Get a decent one (https://www.amazon.com/Flying-Pig-Grooming-Purple-Dryer/dp/B00JV33WJ8/) or invest in a nice one (https://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=30E07465-7B6A-11D5-A192-00B0D0204AE5&q=K-9%20II%20Animal%20Grooming%20Hot%20Blower%20and%20Dryer) and it will pay for itself in a year. Blow that dead hair into the yard, or some pet food stores have self-serve baths that include a blow drier.
Also, something that might help you decide is getting to meet some in person and discuss with breeders. If you go to infodog.com, it will show dog shows near you. A week or so before the show, the judging schedule will be posted and you can see how many dogs of that breed will be there, and when. DM me if you need help!
Really just depends what your expectations are, assuming you got the one mentioned above
> Shelandy 3.2HP Speed Adjustable Dog Hair Dryer
You can certainly use it to dry, but it might take a good deal longer than more expensive ones. But if you’re only bathing once every few months, the difference between a 15m dry and a 90m dry might not matter too much to you. That's about the difference between a "pet dry" and a "show dry" for us, and I don't mind doing a show dry every other month or so...more than that and it's obnoxious.
When the Shelandy is running at max speed (advertised as 135MPH or ~11,880 FPM) it’s about 1/5th the speed of a K9-II (59,329 FPM) assuming the same CFM as the K9-II (~0-240CFM) that potentially means 5x longer drying. It’d be nice if they listed the actual CFM....or at least the area that the FPM was measured over (Cubic Feet per Minute = Feet per Minute x Area)
For comparison, the often recommended “budget” flying pig option runs at the same CFM as the K9-II, but about half the speed.
We’ve been in situations where a friend was using their flying pig dryer on a dog with less coat than ours, and we’d finish first and their dog would still be very wet, and they would finish off using our dryer.
It’s fine for them because they don’t take their dog to swim as often, and they don’t show, so they can deal with the times when they do it infrequently…but they did go to the pool more when we’d be there to have access to our drier.
Edit: Also saw the leaf blower comment. For comparison Leaf blowers run at ~5280 - ~23,760FPM and upwards of ~200-600CFM. Handheld models obviously being on the lower end and corded or back mounted models being on the upper end. Obviously they aren't necessarily designed to provide heat at the output well.
Also keep in mind how your dog will feel about having to be dried for X amount of time...and that unless you train it early on they'll likely get more and more fed up with it. Ours will take a nap while we dry him, but if yours won't and you have a drier that takes longer you might want to consider a crate attachment or something instead of trying to keep them on a table for the full duration.
