If your MacBook is one of the ones that has a combo TOSLink/3.5mm jack, you can just get an optical cable to go between that and the optical in on the Ruark's and skip getting a DAC.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/FosPower-Toslink-Digital-Connectors-Strain-Relief-Gold/dp/B00T8HWUVS
get a chromecast audio from walmart for like 45 bucks. they still have them.
then get one these from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T8HWUVS?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
the difference using optical is muuuch better than the miio. sooo much more convenient and better sq
might i suggest you buy a chromecast audio for 40ish. walmart online has them.then get one these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T8HWUVS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_i_QZFQF563HAMPN6S3XJS4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 connect your phone to it, plug the optical cable from it to digital input no.1. use that input and you'll have really good sound. really good sound. even with spotify.
and simplicity.
as far as how loud, a soundmeter app will be close enough to start with. you can also buy a spl meter. you'll use it more than you think.
my guesstimate is you'll hear it at about 90db maybe. for me an almost noticeable grainy feeling to the upper mids and highs. ymmv.
im running 150. i seem to think i hear the beginnings of distortion at about 96ish. ears are not accurate.
after a few songs at 85db ive had enough. my loud these days 70 or so.
have fun though!
Yes, but it's also worth looking at whether the line out is optical. If it is, you can use it with an external DAC. If you decide to go that route, what you'll need is a mini-Toslink cable like this one to connect to your external DAC.
I mention this because my Sony Discman has an optical line out.
2 things. 1. this is a chromecast audio, not the regular chromecast. 2. chromecast audio actually has a toslink jack (think headphone jack) and you can get a toslink to S/PDIF cable that bumps up the resolution up. The little audio cable that comes with it sounds like crap but with this, my Roon is showing a solid signal path.
More like this if your projector has an optical output. They would be for the best sound.
If it only has 3.5in output then a normal 3.5 cable is fine.
That's exactly why I came to this thread! I wasn't aware of mini Toslink. So cool that both can be used using the same port.
So I should be able to just get this, right?
Actually, wouldn't something like this work around that?
You could try an audio out to optical connector, something like this
Some (most?) TVs will power the optical out and not shut off the TV speakers. You could use an optical to mini plug adapter cable and any of the TV assist devices like "TV Ears" etc.
Ahh I see. Its looks like standard from sony. I checked my mobo it does not have optical output, just 6 audio ports. I was wondering if I should get this wire
Is one end the standard optical connector while the other looks like a 3.5mm jack like this
I've used this for my Playbar; seems to work fine:
FosPower (3 Feet) 24K Gold Plated Toslink to Mini Toslink Digital Optical S/PDIF Audio Cable with Metal Connectors & Strain-Relief PVC Jacket https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T8HWUVS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_VyGJzbER6RQJE
Then in that case I would just use optical audio cable between the mi box and the receiver make sure the optical audio cable has the little adapter mini toslink with it for the mi box.
I found this cable ... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T8HWUVS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_yM-hybBYH846N
You got me in the right direction though. digital optical to 3.5mm
Hmm, looks cool. Is it just faster audio? Is this what I need (below)? And I connect it from the Macbook Pro to the TV's headphone jack? I assume I need an adaptor for the other end of the cable. Sorry, I'm kind of a noob when it comes to cables.
Could I use this and lose the 3.5 altogether?

Thank you for the GREAT information and for taking time for detailed replies. For the PC to Modi connection would i use a 3.5 out from the PC audio to the optical input on the Modi? This cable (see link)? I run my phone into the usb on the modi now leaving the optical port or the round port to choose from. Thank you again.
So I have this motherboard (ASRock AB350M Pro4) in this case (Fractal Design Define Mini C). I also have a soundbar that only has auto-start with an optical cable in, and not with HDMI passthrough. There's a 3.5mm jack on both the mobo and the case, and 3.5mm <-> optical cables look to exist, but they're very explicit that they're not for analog 3.5mm connections, and only for 3.5mm optical/Mini Toslink connections, and I don't think my 3.5mm jacks are mini toslink. Is my best bet something like this, or is there another solution I'm missing?

this is the ultimate flex. gold connectors on a optical cable
Hi, bit of a nub here...
I have a jack/port on my laptop with a symbol that looks like this. Is this an SPDIF out port? Mini Toslink? The symbol just doesn't look like it's supposed to? It's next to my headphone out and my microphone in, and I supposedly have a spdif out, so... yeah. That.
Anyhoo, assuming it is, is this (Amazon UK link) the right cable I'd need to connect it to a Schiit Modi 2 Uber?
Yeah it's a nub question. Sorry.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T8HWUVS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 i just found this. tried all usb ports on my pc getting the same results
Gotta have that gold plated toslink.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T8HWUVS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_-z8xFbM9X5HDJ I got this one, was dead tired so i put aux but i think it is a mini toslink :) I am using the MSI 7REX GL62M
You do know Chromecast Audio will work with optical, right? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T8HWUVS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I would say try installing the realtek drivers for your board -
https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Motherboard/GA-X99-Phoenix-SLI-rev-10#support-dl-driver-audio
That may give it the option to output the correct PCM stream.
Other than that, try another cable. The AD18's OPT 2 has the regular sized optical TOSLINK connector, OPT1 has the mini TOSLINK connector that resembles a 3.5mm headphone plug - make sure the source is selected correctly.
Also, make sure your windows output device is on optical and, of course, make sure there are no endcaps/dustcaps on your optical cable either, just in case.
Specifically, mini on one end.
>SPIDF (optical) is supported through the 3.5 jack on the back.
Wait, are you saying this has 3.5mm optical (mini-toslink)?
?
I haven't seen that spec'd anywhere. Even Google's own data sheet just says "3.5 mm jack with analog audio input".
See: https://store.google.com/us/product/google_home_max_specs?hl=en-US
"Ports and Connectors", section.
The 3.5mm optical cable cable is digital-only. It can't convert a digital signal to an analog one. The combination port also carries an analog signal for a 3.5mm miniplug stereo TRS or miniplug stereo + mic TRRS, but those are capabilities of the port hardware, not the cable.
Edit: I reread the question, and I get that you're looking for the jack hardware. No idea about that, sorry.
