I use a Garmin dual monitor (ANT+ and Bluetooth) and it works well (Garmin 010-12883-00 HRM-Dual... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N3C5WRG?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share). It is a chest strap. I first used one that goes on my forearm that I use in my indoor bike trainer, but that one is uncomfortable when rowing so I would not recommend heart monitors that wrap around your forearm.
I've been using the Garmin HRM-Dual for over a year now. I've had to change the battery a couple times. There have been one or two runs where the reading was clearly wrong, but I restarted the run, reconnected the HR monitor, and things were back to normal. Otherwise, it's been a good heart rate monitor.
It doesn't work in the water, but it doesn't seemed hurt by the water. I wore it during a triathlon this summer, and as soon as I came out of the water it started working.
I have a Garmin Vioacitive 3 and I'm unable to get it to pair in any way. I purchased a Garmin HRM-Dual Heart Rate Monitor and it works with the "Row Indoor" Garmin app and supersedes the watches HRM to use the chest unit instead.
Not sure if the Solar would be different but based on looking at what my watch says, vs what the chest strap says, the strap seems more consistent and accurate.
As for calorie counts I don't understand the vast difference between what the Ergatta reports vs what the Garmin Row Indoor app reports The Ergatta is more than 4x higher than what the app reports.
With all that said, I like using the Garmin Row because it feeds into the rest of my Garmin metrics (sleep activity etc.)
I'm using a garmin heart rate monitor that is working fine with Tonal. I had a little trouble pairing it at first, but turning off all other bluetooth devices in the same room first did the trick. Like /u/GabeRealMedina mentioned, there are two benefits - a real time heart rate counter shows up on the screen during workouts, and there is a report when you are done that shows your heart rate over time during the workout.
I use a Garmin, works fine.
any of them will do really, but I have the garmin HRM Dual, and I like it.
I use the Garmin asl well. Super easy to use. Connects right away.

Hey man, fwiw I'm an endurance athlete whose familiar with heart rate and have been training with heart rate metrics for many years. 170-180BPM is simply a measuring inaccuracy.... walking around at that heart rate would leave you in a massive puddle of sweat.
Before you see a doctor, try to establish your actual resting heart rate. To mitigate inaccuracies you'll need a chest strap HR monitor as wrist based monitors are prone to inaccuracy. Upon waking up, throw on the chest strap and note the variance of your HR for approximately a minute to get your actual resting HR.
Heart rates are individual and yours will be different from your peers, but 170-180 almost seems like your recording device picked up your step cadence or is simply incorrect.
My max HR is 174, recorded from a bike race, and at rest my HR can be between 30bpm, up to 55bpm depending on training load, fitness, and freshness.
The following link is the HR chest strap monitor I use.
Hope this helps, and keep up the good work!
I think it’s this one I’ve had it since 2016!

I ended up ordering one of these Garmin straps, hopefully it works well.
This has worked like a charm for me with my Bike
Yes, assuming you're talking this one
This is the one I have. Sometimes they go on sale if you track the price.
If I buy just a Garmin HRM (like attached) will that work with a 3rd party app to Strava or does it need a Garmin watch / computer.
