If they're on your porch, they're trespassing. Call the police (or ask "new guy" if he'll call the police if he spots them when you aren't home).
Also, get something like this:
They're cheap and easy to use. My elderly neighbor has one on her front door. She sometimes forgets to switch it off when deliveries arrive, and I can hear it in my apartment with my windows and door shut. It isn't loud enough to wake me up, but it definitely gets my attention when I'm hanging out watching TV. It's about as loud as a smoke alarm.
You can also get stick-on door and window alarms from Amazon for super cheap. I had these when I lived in a street-access studio. While they won't actively protect you, they make a LOT of noise.
Yikes. That would freak me out. If you want to cheaply make yourself a bit safer at night, you should replace the screws in the door frame/hinges with longer screws — this costs only a few cents and a few minutes of time. Google how to do it to increase door security and you’ll find plenty of information. This will help prevent someone from kicking your door in — it is quite easy to kick in a door. At a minimum, I would also purchase some really cheap door alarms you can stick on the door, which can be armed from the inside.
I'm glad they are taking this seriously for you! Terrifying incident and not something I would ever want to experience.
A few things you can do to help you feel better about being home alone. Obviously make sure your doors are locked (thankfully in this case it seems like they were) just to help prevent someone coming in by opening it. There is also something called "door Jam armor" that I was recommended here to prevent someone from kicking in your door. It's not expensive, really easy to install and unobtrusive.
There are little chimes you can get for windows Amazon link that are equally unobtrusive and just make a very loud chirping noise if the window is opened without them being disengaged. These would wake you up similar to a smoke detector but louder.
You can also pick up keychain mace, or just regular mace to carry around and have at home so that if someone physically stronger than you breaks in, or tries to attack you there is a way to respond.
If you are comfortable with it having a gun at home can give you a means of self defense in the case of someone larger breaking in. It's not for everyone, but it is a tool that helps some people feel more comfortable after incidents like this. My mother experienced a very traumatic incident with a neighbors home and could not stand to be at home alone until she had picked up a gun. She's never had to use it but it made her feel much safer being a smaller, single woman.
Ultimately you are unlikely to ever have an incident like this occur again, thankfully! But taking a few steps to make yourself feel more comfortable in your own home, and be prepared just in case something happens is not the worst move.
You can buy these awesome door alarms on Amazon and attach them to the top of the door with removable adhesive strips (so they don't leave a mark or residue). I've used them as personal home security for years, and plan to use it on my backyard door when my son is a little older. The alarm is very loud, so you would definitely be alerted if she tried to open the door.
Drop a dowel rod in the back of the track to keep the door from sliding open. Those doors can be lifted from up from the track and pushed in but that’s pretty hard to do, especially if the door is a tight fit for the track. I don’t know if any way to prevent lifting and pushing in, but you can get security seals that will set off an alarm if broken (like this). The alarm won’t go anywhere like the police or a monitoring company, but the noise should scare someone off. Then put one of those “protected by ADT” or whatever stickers up.
I purchased them at Walmart but I have also seen them at Amazon.

You are not a negligent parent. I am not going to shame your husband either — these things just happen sometimes — but I imagine he doesn’t feel nearly as bad as you do, right? Despite being more objectively at fault? This is needless mom guilt, full stop.
We put these alarms on our doors and windows because we have escapees. I didn’t even realize how much time I was spending worrying about it when I needed to poop or was settling the baby in a different room. It’s helped me chill out a LOT. 10/10 recommend.
I mean…if you go to Amazon and search “window alarm”, do those not meet the need? Such as:
GE Personal Security Window/Door, 4-Pack, DIY Protection, Burglar Alert, Wireless, Chime/Alarm, Easy Installation, Ideal for Home, Garage, Apartment, Dorm, RV and Office, 45174, 4 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FGPM1SS/
It won't help with what's already been done, but all of our exterior doors have these little alarms that chime when the door is opened. We got them so we could hear if toddler got up and opened a door, but they'd obviously alert you if someone was coming in. I'm sorry your privacy was violated. That's not a good feeling.
You can get some cheap alarms off Amazon that you can stick to the inside of windows or doors and it will sound a loud alarm if they're opened. It's a quick alternative to a security system.
Something like these might work- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FGPM1SS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_HN0MBX063BDXVTN2F5WN
Kids part is still unanswered. If you have no kids, consider concealment furniture or a way to hide it well. Throw up big signs that say smile you’re on camera, and get door sensor alarms and put them on doors and windows like this one. Sensor alarm
As others have said, you can bolt it to the bed frame which would be better than chaining it to the frame. Can also put a giant piece of wood into a closet, and bolting it to that piece of wood so that its no longer removable from said closet.

Put it on their front door and ding dong ditch them with a note that says “still not as loud as your music”
I bought this type of thing from Aldi last year. Works great and is really loud. You could try something like this:
Comcast fucking around update 2.0ish.
First off I made a typo its 15 hours of calls with Comcast.
As for you keep filing FCC complaints I'm going that route tonight. My internet speed was fuckered but is fixed now but I didn't mention that I don't have certain channels that I was paying for on my Tivo. Comcast said 100% Tivo's fault after about 15 hours of fucking around which involved a lot of resetting shit. I Called Tivo and they said nope it's comcast but lets 3 way call to solve this issue. Holy fucking shit a company that knows customer service. Hold for 20+ minutes and 2 minutes into comcast picking up and, boom, literally the problem was solved.
Legally again ianal but contracts are meant to be beneficial to both parties. You are paying for a service that is supposed to, at a bare minimum, notify anyone that an entrance has been opened. You can buy window and door alarms from amazon for about $5 a peice that will do more than your $30ish per month.
unfortunately the US world is set up to protect corporations. Honestly I'd break contract and immediately start the small claims court process to protect your credit.
Window/Door Alarms. These stick on like command strips and you can set it to alarm or make a chime noise when a window or door is opened! I also have pieces of wood in my windows to help block them from being opened by force.
Cheap security camera. This I have in my window pointing to the front door, there’s an app you download where you can watch the video! Definitely gives peace of mind when I’m out of town.
Have fun! I lived with roommates all throughout college, it is so fun to live by yourself.
I'm considering simple motion sensing flood lights. If this was a random attack/crime of opportunity (door unlocked being that opportunity), I feel like lights that clicked on as they walked by might scare them enough to push them off my property. I have a camera on my front door, but think I need one in the back as well.
Also there are simple alarms that go off when you open a door/window. Super low tech. Basically makes loud sounds if they get out of alignment with each other. That can't hurt. Neither could a sign saying that you've got security.... all these things add up to a perpetrator moving away from your property.
I've got a Blink camera up front, thinking today, on Cyber Monday, I might buy the same for the back...
> Is there any data out there or personal stories that anyone knows of whether getting a doorbell camera combined with other cameras seems to be best or is it more or less likely to be the same as getting all regular non-doorbell cameras?
It all depends on your layout. If your home layout has the ability to place a camera near your door, like above it, then you might not need a doorbell cam. However, the advantage of a doorbell cam is the height it is at. It lets you get a good view of a person's face, instead of the top of their head like if you had a cam above the door.

>-Speaking of alarm systems, are there any "fake alarm systems" like so you don't have to actually get a monthly-billed service with a company but that can do something to deter home invaders? Like maybe one that just makes an alarm sound but doesn't contact a company to send police?
What I'd definitely recommend is getting some window and door alarms that make a loud sound. Something like these is a great cheap deterrent.

>-In terms of whether it's better to get like rechargeable cameras or ones that are hardwired into your electricity, what do people tend to find better? It seems to me it would be better to hardwire but then how expensive on average would you ballpark that costs? And then does it just basically use tons of electricity, possibly hiking up the electrical bill?
LOL no, they barely use any electricity. Each of my cams use about 5W of power during the day and about 8W at night. With my electric rate, that's like 2 cents a day.
Battery cameras don't record 24/7, they only record when motion is detected. I already mentioned my thoughts on that below, but that's the reason you should avoid battery cams.

>And how do you recharge the rechargeable ones generally? I'm guessing it's a battery pack that you remove and put into a charger for a few hours?
The ones I'm familiar with use a built-in battery pack. You either have to connect a cable to the cam to charge it every few months, or you can use a little solar panel with it to keep it charged at all times.

>-I have seen some cameras talking about having color nightvision? Is it seriously that? Nightvision image with color? Sounds weird that it can do that so does it look good or what?
The cameras I've seen that say this, that just means they have a light on the camera that lights up the area enough that it doesn't need to switch to night mode. It's tricksy wording to make you think it's something it isn't.
Invest in these on windows - alarm
Ring cameras will suffice outdoors around your house.
Hi sweet girl ♥️♥️ I’m so sorry you went through this and am so glad to read you’re getting the help you need.
I wanted to drop some links to some (very affordable!) home security systems from Amazon:
1) Window alarms- GE Personal Security Window/Door, 4-Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FGPM1SS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_KDBFS95E7EPTWE9MM7W4
2) GE Deluxe Wireless Door, 120 Decibel, Alarm or Entry Chime, Indoor Personal Security, with Keypad Activation, 45117, Kit, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0014A4JWU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_YC9EFE9Y31Y3RMZNNYXS
The second one (door alarm) is my favorite— once your open the door you hear a loud beep and you have ~30 seconds to input your code or the alarm goes off VERY loudly. I armed mine every time I left my apartment.
For just over $30 hopefully that’ll give you some peace of mind. I hope your healing process is kind and surrounded by loved ones/professionals!
I don't see why not! I have an old vehicle and thinking of installing regular magnetic house window/door alarms. Super cheap super loud. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FGPM1SS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_i_31HYXMYAB8HP5TPW978P?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
If you're interested in the window alarms (or for anyone in an old-school apartment with a fire escape): https://www.amazon.com/GE-Protection-Installation-Apartment-45174/dp/B00FGPM1SS/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=window+sensors&qid=1614285862&sr=8-3
$20 for a pack of 4!
These sensors are for broken windows: https://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Slim-Wireless-Detector-Vibration-Security/dp/B087DV6V8Z/ref=sr_1_11?dchild=1&keywords=window+sensors&qid=1614285862&sr=8-11
"these hands" i lol'd.
In regards to your door dilemma might I suggest first, black out curtains. Second, check this out:
https://www.amazon.com/GE-Protection-Installation-Apartment-45174/dp/B00FGPM1SS
Those GE door/window alarms are cheap and they work. You could even put two on the same door if you are worried about system failure/redundancy. If someone opens that door it's going to send a loud shriek out. Only someone on a mission is going to continue. If they continue inside and turn it off, well, you've hit them with the old one-two. There are TWO alarms going crazy. That's extra time needed to disable two security devices. Most won't make it past the first one and few will make it past two.
Might I also recommend a Remington 870. They, along with Mossberg 500, are battle tested and just oh so reliable. Don't fall for that bit about slug, birdshot, slug, birdshot. Fill that bad boy full of slugs. If that alarm goes off in the middle of the night all you need to do is roll over, grab Betty, acquire target and fire.
I'm also a fan of "these hands".
Thanks!
Poles
Previous to all of this I had a Tension Rod in my bedroom window
I had a failed spinal surgery a few years ago and once I moved to AZ I bought PVC pipe to make water weights. I was able to put those in a few windows.
As for the rest- I remembered we had a 2 set of cheap Curtain Rods like this one . I measured out the window length, marked it with a sharpie, bent it back and forth till it snapped, and banged it out with a rubber mallet.
Unfortunately, the PCV pipe left a large enough gap for someone to put their arm through and unlock our patio door. I disassembled a Swifter and put it next to the pipe.
You just gotta get creative!
