They make computer carrying straps. It basically straps a handle on the computer allowing it to be carried like a small suitcase.

A reasonably crafty person definitely could simply make one.
Another idea would be to fit a handle on your computer. If you did that i would check to make sure it and casing was sturdily attached.
Maybe something like this may be suitable. Thermaltake Core X1 Mini ITX CA-1D6-00S1WN-00
Or any size case that's cheap and light. With a strap like this.
I don't have the need to lug around a system anymore but when I did I used straps that attached to my PC case that allowed me to hold it like a suitcase. In between the straps were sewn pouches for holding a small keyboard, mouse and video cables. The opposite side could perhaps hold a small monitor.
Here's an amazon link to a product that looks similar to what I was using.

There are handles you can slip on your computer to make it decently portable. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/GearGrip-Geargrip-Lite-CPU-Holder/dp/B0009JCUY6
I'm planning to make a fractal design node 304 some time in the future, and will likely get this handle to put on it to increase portability. Might be a good fit for you, and it'll also allow you to build in something smaller than, say, the 380t.
There should be room. Even if the dorms you get are incredibly small and crappy, it's not like a PC is a giant piece of equipment.
If anything, plan ahead now by going with a micro-atx, midtower, or mini-itx case rather than a full tower. Then, if you want, go grap some computer straps like these and you'll be fine. Or, go with a case that has handles built in like the Silverstone ML08.
Oh, and make sure you lock your dorm rooms. You don't want to spend 1k on a PC and have it get stolen.
In short, you should be good.
I don't know about something to fit your tower, but I use the Thermaltake Battle Dragon Bag and a Geargrip Lite CPU Holder to carry my items.
I load everything, including my monitor into the bag, then just carry the computer. It makes the portability a thousand times easier.
There's no reason that you'd need to move your entire PC setup, just the PC.
I use something like this to make my computer easy to carry, and use a usb-powered touchscreen for display and mouse input. If you're just doing demos, you may not need a screen or input devices, but they're nice to have.
This keyboard/remote/touchpad/flying mouse paired with a <$100 USB screen would work well for a portable VR system.
Put the Vive and lighthouses in the original box for transportation, or if you have the spare cash, get a headset with inside-out tracking for demos. I use an Odyssey+ for this purpose, leaving my Vive Pro safe at home.
Don't buy the Prodigy M. The things on the top that look like handles have a rubbery, texturized surface that is a nightmare to keep clean.

> Also is there a reason you're favoring skylake over kaby, or is it just price?
> If price isn't an issue then you might as well get a 7700k (even if you don't want to OC). The 'K' can make your rig last another year or two past it's prime so I think it's worth the extra $30 or so
Haha, I guess that's an "oops". I've been speccing this system out for a few months now, and when I looked at the i7s before deciding on a Xeon (which I'm now changing my mind on), Kaby Lake was either brand new or not out yet.
I had also ruled out the "K" series thinking that using "overclocking" parts for a stable work machine would be a bad idea, but it's sounding like that's not the case.
> I'm curious what case are you going for? Since you don't need a gpu there's some really cool sff options, there are some mITX cases that are small enough to fit in a backpack.
Well, that part is interesting... I need this to be portable, so that a few times a year I can take it on a plane from my home (where I'll normally work) to my company's office across the country. Hence why I picked mITX.
My current leader is the Lian-Li PC-TU200B, which has a handle on it. Perfect. I like the Corsair 380T better, but I don't think it's going to fit onboard an airplane (either overhead bin or under a seat).
I'd also settle for a regular desktop or tower that I can strap a Geargrip Lite handle to. That might be better, even, since I hear that Lian-Li case is a real bitch to access anything internally.
If you have another suggestion for a case, I'll certainly take it. As long as it's easy to carry through an airport, fits on a plane, and fits 2x 3.5" drives and maybe 1x 2.5" drive (SSD, if the mobo doesn't have M.2), that's all I really need.
Something like this might be what you're looking for.

Those M1 carry bags are a hand-made, no compromises design. I love mine, the quality is fantastic, but they are time-consuming to make and the lady making them was constantly back-logged with orders. For a while she stopped taking orders to catch up, the listings are up again but the price is now $300: https://www.etsy.com/shop/FineCharacter
The 380T is not small, I've worked on a few 380T builds and it's absurd how big it is considering it's only Mini-ITX. I have a SLI 980 mATX build in a case half the size. The handle on the 380T isn't that great either, the gap under the handle is somewhat small so if you have big hands you may not be able to grip the handle comfortably.
Another option would be the Geargrip harness: http://www.amazon.com/GearGrip-Geargrip-Lite-CPU-Holder/dp/B0009JCUY6
I used to use one for a Antec Mini P180 and it worked great.
I use this to transport my mATX build http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009JCUY6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00
