You'll want to use a screw removal kit. You'll have to find the right size to use, but they're really effective at removing stripped screws. Obviously you will need to find a new screw for the machine afterwards. This method does destroy the screw more, but it's unusable already, so no harm there. That “just cut a notch in it and use a screw driver!” Method has never ever worked for me. If a ratchet with much more leverage wasn’t able to get it out, a screw driver most certainly won’t either.

Try jamming a Torx bit in there. If that doesn't work, look in to extractor bits.

You could just use one of those screw extractor bits to cut right through the paint since you're tossing them anyway.

That remaining bolt tightens into that little extension piece. See if you can remove that one, pull out that extension piece, and you should be able to see the other end of those broken bolts. I'd pull mine off and take a picture for you, but the bolt for that extension piece is one of the bolts holding my aftermarket bumper on, and I really don't want to mess with that right now. Those two bolts you broke off are two I never reinstalled, so they're open holes that look like they're just nuts welded into the frame member.

Either take it to a local tire shop and give them a few bucks, or torch + easy out (or equivalent, like these: https://www.amazon.com/Irwin-Industrial-Tools-53535-Extractor/dp/B00004YOBF)

There are drill bits made for extracting broken or rounded bolts. I bought a small set 10 years ago and have used them many times. It's a set identical to these.

I have a set like this and it essentially drills out a bit of the screw so you can flip the bit and it will grab and remove it. Super handy to have around.

About 10 years ago, I ended up needing a set to get the drain plug off my Monte Carlo ('04, with the piston slap-happy 3.4L V6) after the previous owner had almost completely rounded off the bolt head. I didn't have access to a welder, so this was after trying Quick Steel putty on a socket, which I was able to hammer into place, but it broke as soon as I started to turn it.

With the extractor sockets, the fucker came right out on the first attempt.

I got this set awhile back and it's come in handy a few times already, most recently on some suspension linkage screws that would have been quite expensive to cut off and replace.

This looks like a Price Pfister? Under that handle will be a plastic spindle with metal pin that screws in to the plastic that has an indention where the hex screw rides (stripped hex screw in this case). I would give it a little penetrating oil and use an screw extractor to slowly back it out.

Hopefully it doesn't get to that point, because if it snaps, you may be able to tap it off-center with a flat head screwdriver in hopes it starts working free, or drill it and buy some of these to get the rest out.

And yeah, I imagine kroil would never hurt if it's stubborn.

To expand on what others have said. The bolt nearly broke inside what it was fastening. If the bolt had broke it's a very difficult process to remove the rest of the bolt and requires left hand drill bits, a steady hand, maybe a bolt extractor, and luck. When drilling the bolt out you have to make sure you don't damage the threads of what the bolt is inside of.

I recently had to extract a couple M3 screws from some arm/axle parts on one of my cars and it saved my ass.

Yeah, if you have enough access to dremel a slot in the screw head, that would be the simplest. Next best would be a screw extractor (example). Third, simply drill out the center of the screw until the remains of the head pop off.

The first two should yield a usable standoff/screw hole on the other side, but drilling it out would likely leave it unusable.

I’ve tried the rubber band method and that did not work. I’ve stripped several gpu screws before and I’ve used the linked kit with the smallest bit to extract my stripped gpu screw. When using the kit be patient, it took me between 15-20 mins to remove one stripped screw. Be sure to use your drill in reverse and if it doesn’t work try a bigger bit. Been there done that. Those installers suck! I'd try an extractor like this.

If you do end up having to remove the balancer, I'd recommend finding some all thread, a thick washer (3/8" steel plate), and a nut. Then when you're done installing you can just use vicegrips to pull the all thread out. Or weld a nut to the end of it if you use it often enough.

Try a easy out for the bolt. Or another trick would be to cut a groove in the head of the bolt and use a flat head screw driver to get it out.

So there are stripped screw extraction kits you can get online, I've only had to use them in wood (and had one used on a stripped screw being removed from my ankle post-surgery, that was fun), so when it comes to using one on your rifle, I'd probably take it to an armorer tp avoid unnecessary or irreparable damage. You can try steel wool, a rubber band, or superglue as well to try and give your screwdriver more traction/friction on the screw first.

It's too late now, but last time I had a very very well seized thru-axle even the LBS wasn't able or willing to get out, I eventually managed to extract it with one of these types of easy-out and a nice big wrench on the end. Took a heck of a lot of leverage and made some nasty noises, but came out without damaging anything other than the axle.

Try turning the bracket. Or, cut the head off with a hacksaw or die grinder, etc. if you’re not concerned about the bracket.

You could try using a extractor tool to get it out. That or drill it out completely.

I was at a hobby workshop on a lift so i would have been stranded without it. Go slowly.

Its difficult to see the type of screw in the pic. Is it a hex head, or maybe torx? Either way, here's what I would try - in the order I would try.

Use a screw extractor like this. Use it as directed.

If that doesn't work, get an allan key that fits best. Clean it and the screw with alcohol. Use a small dab of superglue to secure the key to the screw. Be very careful to NOT glue the screw to the plastic housing - you'll be in a worse situation then. If in doubt of your ability to do this, skip this step.

Next, as /u/dcolecpa mentioned, cut a slot in the screw. Because the screw is recessed, you will cut into the plastic case. If you aren't OK with that, then skip this step. Using a cutting wheel, go slow, and try to no move the dremel once you start cutting. You want a clean cut with sharp edges for the screwdriver to bite into.

The last option I can think of is to drill the head off. Take the other screws out, and see what size the screw shaft is. You want a reverse twist drill bit just slightly bigger than that (maybe 1/64", or 1/32" larger - or, half mm, if you aren't in the US). Use slow speed, and medium amount of force right in the middle of the screw. When you are done, the screw head will start spinning. Once you have the head off, you'll need to use pliers to extract the screw shaft (I'd recommend vice-grip's to get a good grip). NOTE: There's a risk here that once you drill the head off, there's not enough screw sticking out to grab with pliers.

Regardless, you'll need to replace the screw. I would look at FastenAl for replacements. You probably want Pan Sheet Metal Screws.

You should try a screw extractor those little allen screws (usually) don't have a lot of torque on them, but might not be the case here if the previous owner stripped them. If they added loctite that could also make it trickier.

I bet if you call S&W about it they would fix it for free.

These bolt extractors worked the best for me, tho the vise grips did manage to get one out. Heat really helps, so hitting them with a torch prior to attempting to back them out can make all the difference.

The problem is the industrial grade lok-tite they use. And the very soft steel. Screws should not be this cheap.

Screw extractor bits are handy to have; they're designed to make an even shaped hole (possibly not needed here for a stripped hex head) and then the other end will bite in and remove the screw.

Otherwise it really depends what tools you have available; you could do anything from grinding a slot for a large screwdriver to drilling out the head entirely to spot welding a piece of metal to it that you can turn or just finding something that wedges in tight enough to turn it.

I’ve used remove tools like these (but not this particular kit) to get them out, but personally I’ve never tried it on a screw that small. I don’t see why I wouldn’t work though, as long as the removal tool is small enough.

That screw should be a 5/64 allen. There have been some good suggestions on here to help you get that screw out but I I have another as a last resort to get it out. The gabit micro extractors work very well. The portion meant to drill the hole for the extractor does tend to wear quickly but I have gotten many uses out of the extractor portion. I have removed even the smallest screws from numerous guns. These things pay for themselves. Never stripped the threads on countless guns and always gets the screw out. Well, your going to be stuck with an extractor then, you'll need a good quality drill bit (Dewalt or Bosch) and a center punch. The center punch is critical because when the bolt breaks off it's very uneven, you have to center the drill bit in the bolt, you want to start dead center, for the extractor, I like these.

Btw penetrating oil does not help when using extractors, it can make the extractor slip.

I couldn’t get the giant screws off the overflow drain in my tub, so I got a kit for removing stripped screws, and it worked like a charm. I found this on Amazon.

This kit has saved my ass multiple times when dealing with Benchmade's lead-based screws. Just make sure there's a correct sized bit, there's a lot of kits available like it, I'm just giving the first one I found as an example.

They come in a cobalt option if you can find it choose that one. If not any of them are good enough.

They really are amazing and can handle these small screws.

looks like it’s stripped. You would need a screw extractor like this. afterwards you can get replacement screws on eBay.

The screws in ps3 aren’t of the best quality,and tend to strip. in the future make sure you use the right size, and high precision screwdrivers. wiha makes some pretty nice tools.

The tool of last resort. They served me well as a mechanic for swollen wheel nuts on cars and rounded off u-joint bolts on trucks. Seat the socket with a hammer so the teeth bite, spin it off with an impact. Heat makes a difference.

Screw extractor. Here's an example link. You'll still want to prep it by using some penetrating oil like "Liquid Wrench".

If that doesn't work then drill them out. You'll probably have to clean up the threads with a tap. If the thread area is destroyed then you'll have to use a larger drill and tap for the next size up of thumbscrew.
